You have to remember that they were competing under the old code, where the judges don't take marks off like crazy (well, more than the perfect 10 system but less than the newer codes). It's actually pretty fairly scored under the 08 code. And referring to your other comment, Russia is actually higher than Romania only in bars and vault, but they had big falls and big stumbles on beam and floor, which ultimately costed them the bronze.
it took FIG two olympic cycles to realize that the weight of uneven bars was way higher than the other 3, and Russia took big advantage of that as it is the only apparatus where they actyually excel. In London they had a disaster floor exercise, but the judges (puppetered by Neli Kim) made sure that Romania didn not sneak again and take the silver from Russia that time.

They gave Russia a huge head start on bars alone, had NO Amanar vaults to Russia’s TWO, and were about equal on beam and floor. Even with the mistakes by Russia the massive gap in bars and vault difficulty to start with gave them the advantage.

He visto competir a los equipos en estos juegos (2008) y quiero decir que me parece una falta de respeto monumental que no se le prestara la atención que en verdad merecían los equipos de Rumania y Rusia, como si solo fuesen importantes los equipos de China y USA solamente. Rusia no logró subir al podium, ya que como equipo quedaron 4tas pero Rumania sí lo logró y se llevó el bronce, USA plata y China el oro. Quiero decir que extraño demasiado un equipo como estos para Rumania, porque para mí, una competencia de Gimnasia Artística sin Rumania, no es entretenida. En este proceso de pandemia actualmente me he visto las competencias de Gimnasia Artística por equipos de varios años y siempre ha estado Rumania entre las mejores y deseo que vuelvan con EQUIPAZO porque en verdad se les extraña demasiado. If you watch gymnastics and think it isn’t entertaining just because Romania isn’t there, you need to take a second look. Today, unlike years past there are a bunch of nations whose athletes have a legitimate chance at medaling that weren’t even a focus before- Brazil, Great Britain, Italy, France, Belgium, Canada, and the Netherlands. Gymnastics is about more than just Romania, though I do miss their presence obviously. Hopefully the new crop will have an impact in the next few years.

Romania didn’t garner a gold medal because they didn’t bother to keep up with the trends- especially on bars. They created their own injustice by not taking the time to coach their athletes in a manner that remained competitive with the other countries. Steliana might have medaled had she not been batting so many injuries (back especially), but that’s not the fault of the judges- it’s the fault of your old abusive and corrupt system. You guys got used to getting by with just enough and then wanted to complain when suddenly you couldn’t get away with that anymore. You performed well enough to garner bronze in team and of course Sandra with her brilliant floor- but everything else you brought upon yourselves.
Keep in mind she was battling back spasms. It was a little crazy- and remarkable- she was able to compete at all, let alone on pretty much every event.
Sandra didn't land so well, but her form in the air was much superior to the other two. You can see why she later became a strong vault specialist.
