- New Locking Latches for Pelican Cases
Some of you who travel frequently or who transport and organize a lot of gear may have seen some new items supplier listings when you browse the Pelican Case pages. In addition to the now-established Pelican Air case models like 1535 and 1615, you may have seen related listings with the TRVL suffix after the model number. What's up with that?
It turns out, Pelican is now offering some of their Air series cases with lockable latches. These latches operate with both a user key (the P001 luggage key, which is not all that secure or unique, mind you) and also the TSA007 key. If you're a frequent traveler and don't want to stick a gun in your luggage all the time in order to use high security locks... maybe you're interested in Pelican cases whose latches can lock?
The thing is... Pelican is selling these new TRVL series cases at what appears to be an exorbitant mark-up. Fortunately, it is possible to purchase these new latches by themselves from 3rd parties. This is a video where I showcase the various ways to lock one's luggage and then I swap out a latch on one of my Pelican cases, installing these new TSA compatible locks.
These latches are on Amazon here... www.amazon.com... ...they appeared to sell out rapidly upon the upload of this video, but they are back in stock at this time. That's not an affiliate link, I just enjoy sharing good details with you all. =)

Hey, cool update news!... @SkylarxLily hit me on twitter and informed me: "Did some sleuthing and found those TSA latches in your vid. If you email colorcase, which does a ton of Pelican sales, they gave me a private link for the same 40$ price that has been out of stock on amazon now forever. Hopefully they keep doing it."
I just realized you swapped the bottles! Magnificent bastard... 🥃
question regarding the bigger lock
how much room do you get when trying to open that case with the lock still on the case?
it looks like you get about a inch of wiggle there could that not potentially let someone take smaller items out the case without you knowing or tampering with the locks
a quick and dirty fix would be to have a cloth bag inside that everything goes in and just put the opening towards the hinges so prying fingers cant get at any smaller items to pull them through
VJO? Well someone certainly watches AvE
Also tomatoes
AvE, DvE... If he'd swear more you couldn't tell 'em apart...
good ol' uncle bumble
and the weeble wobbles
It's uncle bumblefuck. Get his name right. And do you know the backstory to the name?
@@AhKeelU its a common name for machinists. At least i have heard that as long as i can remember. Dude is wicked smart though. Deceptively so.
Tomatoes used to explain Dungeons and Dragons stats:
Strength: How for you can throw the tomatoes
Dexterity: How well you can dodge tomatoes thrown at you
Constitution: How many bad tomatoes you can eat
Intelligence: Knowing tomatoes are technically a fruit
Wisdom: Knowing not to put tomatoes into your fruit salad
Charisma: Being able convince people to buy your fruit salad based on tomatoes
This is a wonderful comment. :-)
Fruit salad based on tomatoes? Sounds like a salsa! (Totally not my original comment)
@@car0lm1k3 I found the bard! (Also completely original! From the same original source, even!)
Intelligence: Knowing a tomato is a fruit
Wisdom: Knowing not to put a tomato in a fruit salad
Charisma: Being able to sell a tomato-based fruit salad
If you use a TSA lock you can add a serialized (numbered) tamper tag to one of the case locking points. This gives you a quick visual indicator to let you someone has opened you bag. They aren't too expensive ~$10-15 for 100 of them.
As an alternative I have used several small zip ties with different colors (2 red, 1 green, 1 yellow, for example), super cheap and with a wide range of colors
"Vijeo". Found the AvE fan.
Edit: "She's got some gravity to 'er". lol
😁👍
my first clue was the weeble wobble
a couple more tips for removing pins I learned from modding toys:
When the pin starts moving, check the end that pops out with an eagle eye. If you don't see the hash marks, you're at the wrong end.
BTW, If you decide to YOLO the pin all the way through the wrong way, those hashes will gouge the plastic all the way through, making it so the pin will never stay in again.
Now wait for tsa to start getting the pins out from your latches when using the lock hatches
TSA have keys for it. Also hopefully they would be mindfull enough to remount the latches after inspection. (they probably wouldn't )
@@frederik7338 there have been cases where they have unlocked a tsa lock and just threw it into the luggage in the unlocked state making the lock useless. i wouldn't bee surprised if they used the bolt cutters to just cut the latch off.
I think (welcome to be corrected) that pelican latches have to be open to be removed, meaning you'd still need to unlock the latch to remove it. If some asshat TSA dude knocked the pins out of a latch and then gave up when they realized they still needed the keys I think that would be worth the investment in my mind.
Wasting the time of people whose only purpose in life is to waste your's.
@ @9:37 he latches the case then bangs out the pin.
@@inpalpatine2067 Yeah but then after the pins have been removed you have to pull the latch off. I failed to say that on the latches with a push button (like the TSA replacement latches) I believe you need to actually push the button to disengage the latch. Therefore if the latch is locked it should not disengage after the pin has been removed.
Aaand the latches are no longer available on Amazon.
RIP
they are as of now..
jhenretta Awesome! I ended up getting a Nanuk 935 case with similar latches instead-very happy with my purchase.
Too good to last.
I just found them a few days on Amazon. Picked up 2 sets
Vijayo? Got some gravity in it? This man watches AvE.
Now I know what was in the case in Pulp Fiction. Pappy.
Very excited to see a way to add TSA lock latches...I've got a few year old 1615 case (before the "air" branding) and I have basically given up on any way to lock it. The locks end up either broken off or damaged such that I can't actually remove them without tools at the other end. Even when I don't care about "stuff stolen" I worry about the latches catching and popping open in transit letting stuff fall out.
Parts ordered, I look forward to a conversion!
...and I don't even fly that much, all my headaches are only within half a dozen or so legs of flights. After losing probably $100 or more in various locks until now I've decided the best hope is $0.97 keychain clips...at least they provide a small additional "oops bumped the latch" protection and they also are cheap to replace when they go missing.
Q: How do you get rid of lazy tomatoes employees?
A: Can them.
I can't tell you how much you made Tarah laugh
But do you grill 'em before or after? 😆
I have found that the Abloy PL340 fits my Pelican Air. I also use the SP321 (with the thinner shackle) for locking the zippers on soft bags. I really like your idea of swapping out the latches for the ones with integrated TSA locks. I might have to do that too!
"Get yourself in trouble withe TSA by forgetting these were in your bag."
Heeheehee. So likely to happen too.
I traveled for years with a small scissors at the bottom of a dopp kit bag (forgot it was in there), never ever got flagged for it. Based on that and other info, I estimate the TSA's ability to find actual forbidden stuff at about 5%. But that's if they were real bullets. Since these are not real, and would be a false positive, which would foul up your day, Murphy's law says they are about 95% likely to find them and to go apeshit over it.
@@ChuckvdL I traveled all over the country for work.
I got held up at a gate in Orlando for about 10 min. Finally, a TSA gentleman approached me and asked me if I had a "queek loader". I was baffled. I finally figured out that he thought the carrier for my Surefire batteries was a speed-loader for a pistol.
Mind you, they worked completely from images and never pulled the item out for examination. Crazy.
I & batteries went on but what a strange experience. Hope they're better familiarized with other contraband they're looking for as to fit a pistol, this array would have had to fit a .75 to 1.0 caliber pistol (which I'm pretty sure doesn't exist).😜
I got my bag pulled for having coral the x-ray showed it as C4 🤦♂️🤦♂️
@@greasemonkeymc once on eurostar (no weight limit) I got pulled for having petanque balls... They literally turned the screen round and pointed to them and asked what they were. They did look awfully like grenades on the screen!
I have a classmate that went to Europe with a few 5.56 rounds in his backpack by mistake. Somehow he made it out of the US, into and around Europe including multiple flights, and was stopped in Germany on his way back to the US. Of course they took them from him, but it blew my mind he made it that far. This was about three and a half years ago.
I grow tomatoes ever summer...
Great videos thanks
My friend just buzzed this video to me on Buzz Chat. Definitely worth the watch!
Tomatoes, huh? I ordered some latches! Thanks for the heads-up!
I always liked the thought of TSA not being able to cut my locks, but I hadn't ever considered that they may just keep the case. My phone number is written across the case in 2" tall letters, but you never know with those knuckleheads.
Do you have any tricks for locking your luggage when you're traveling to/through a prohibited place like Chicago or Mexico? I was thinking about packing a 5.56 stripper clip because the federal guidelines say that "ammunition clips" need to be locked up like firearms, but its not serialized and won't even be recognized by most anyone. Thoughts?
Awesome video.
I recently ordered the 1615 Air Case (without locked hatches) because it was almost $200 cheaper than the 1615 Travel.
These new locks go for ~$50. So assuming I can actually get these installed, that's a savings of $150.
FYSA: Pelican offers military & veterans discount, so that's another $52.04 saved.
I strapped a pelican case onto the back of my motorcycle as a tour pack, these latches seem like a solid solution to keep opportunist thieves out!
Good to hear about these TSA latches for the Pelican cases. If I'm in a hurry and not locking up anything too special, I use zip ties. Which I then cut at my destination. Keeps quick hands out.
Thank you for showing ways to keep our tomatoes secure in our luggage.
I love me some fried-green tomatoes, as long as they are seasoned and cooked correctly! Thanks D.O.! Excellent video!
I just got 4 pelican cases from my wife's work, because they were going to throw them out. Apparently some companies just hate money!..and tomatoes...gonna get some TSA locking hasps to go on a few now, thanks!
This latches are good for a Pelican V700 Vault case, thank you
👍🇺🇾🤝🇨🇦🥩🧉🦮🐎⚖️🗽
Thanks for the video! I'll have to look into Pelican's travel case lineup now.
That way I can travel safely with my tomatoes.
Your Channel is a fantastic font of information. Just got back from Vegas and your Circus Circus Steakhouse review helped me greatly. Dude just keep keep up the excellent work!!!
I use Abloy 330's with a sentry key to protect my special strain of organic tomatoes. Lol. I brought over 8kg of locks from Australia to the States in 2017 and locked them in a plastic storage box with a 40mm Abus dimple padlock. They cut the shackle to see the strange blob of locks on their xray. Luckily they kept all the precious $800 Lockwoods in place and put the cut padlock in the case with a tsa card saying they inspected the case. We don't have guns here but store classified files and electronics, luckily no PL330's have been cut yet. 🤞 Thanks for the info and I'll look up those replacement latches/tsa locks.👍🏻🤓🍺
LOL at all the AvE-isms. Not hard to guess you're a fan.
Federal Cartridge used to give away drilled 22 longs on ball chains as keyrings. I still have a few, so no to-mah-to for me!
you can also open the case 1" -3" if someone opens the latches if you use a large ish hasp.
Big Abloy fan here , I often use them on my lock out / tag out system . Baby Abloy’s are cool !
Does the locking claw still lock the case when you remove the hinge pins? Otherwise an attacker can just remove the pins, take the clasp off and put it back on afterwards (if they know about these).
Ah, I hear you.... No, this wouldn't stop that. Again, these are very low security locks. Just for unimportant luggage contents.
You know, now that I'm thinking about it... It MIGHT be hard to pull the latch off if is locked.
@@DeviantOllam @10:23
All of mine have locks built onto them. One of them is broken... thanks tsa
Super cool Pelican locks. Bad guys wouldn’t get my tomatoes out of my bag with those babies on there.
So I have watched a bunch of your talks on picking, but I can’t seem to figure out what I am doing wrong. I am using light tension, getting all the pins in place, but the locks won’t open. Any ideas what I may be doing wrong?
Also, tomatoes!
Quick question, will those TSA latches come off if they are locked and the pins are removed?
I had to travel a lot for work, and have a big pelican case full of tools (nothing dangerous), and don't bother with locks. I have had the TSA break the pelican latch, despite it not even being locked.
Even with it being integrated into the latch, they will still sometimes not bother getting the key.
Does that pin not become lose after the threaded side gets punched through? I’m assuming the threaded portion on the plastic case gets destroyed right?
Very cool idea, going to have to pick up a couple new locking latches to secure my tomatoes in the old pelican cases
Out of curiosity, have you considered rigging one of those ultra-loud screeching alarms inside your case? Maybe a homemade variant that can be deactivated with a magnet on the side of the case that only you are aware of?
Nice info on the Pelican locks im a photographer and use the cases. Ill be getting some new hasps. Also I like to carry on my tomatoes in the case.
Great cases and locks but what would -you- pick for a seal, if you’re looking for intrusion with the TSA latch?
Pomodoro
So those pelican buckles are TSA compliant... but can't they just be removed by hammering out the pins? like exactly how you do it?
start the message tomatoes. I enjoyed that you informed us about a wonderful locking upgrade to pelican cases, then immediately showed an easy attack on the lock by removing the hinge pin. Always great to remember that the world is flawed.
I was at the medical .. uh .. 'tomato' dispensary the other day, and I just busted out laughing. Everyone looked at me like I was a lunatic, because I had noticed that every one of their 'secure' doors were made of steel with reinforced frames and had biometric readers... and hinges on the outside.
I called the manager over and showed him the secure hinge pins on amazon and suggested he spend the extra $12 - I love these videos.. and also bourbon. (the other tomato dispensary that has hinges on the inside and rex? sensors is going to get a vape demo next time I go in)
Casually slaps in a bottle of Pappy van Winkle, what a legend 😂😂
Hi @DevianOllam, do you know if these latches are compatible with the Vault V100? Or if there's any compatible?
just asking for a friend... what do you think the TSA would do if someone put a bolt through the holes and attached a nut using a not insubtantial weld?
On the issue of them cutting TSA locks anyway. (It happen me once and I don't even live in the US, just have traveled there a few times) They did glue it together and it's still funcional (and they did add a "nice" little message inside the luggage that of course we could only see when we were back in our country).
was just searching Amazon and then latches are no longer listed, fond the sellers link on a defiant sight and can only find them on E-bay now
Probably a game of cat and mouse...I found some on Amazon last night and got an order in. Or maybe they're just SO popular that the little 3rd parties can't keep up.
Thanks for the info! Buying packing cubes for my pelican case now. Tomatoes tomatoes tomatoes
What’s that tool called that is used for removing the pin?
Where do you get the hasps that protect the holes where the shackle of the padlock slips thru?
Can the case be opened by removing the pin while locked?
Are there any pelican case alternatives with internal latch pins, or proper lock bodies that allow for changing out the core? I want my tomatoes to be secure, and I don't fly much.
You say giveaway, I say tomatoes.
Love your videos, always the high point of my day!
Could you use shutter style locks so they cant cut them or at least make them very hard to cut
Does an 80% receiver count as a firearm for non-TSA lock purposes? Just to confuse the tomatoes.
I was super excited about these new latches for my Pelican cases like a kid unwrapping his tomatoes on Christmas. However is seems they no longer exist on Amazon...
Great video as always! Is there a place to look up what "allows" us to secure a case? Outside the US we don't have a pile of guns to select from and pop in our luggage. Are firearms the only things that qualifies?
do TSA-compliant tomatoes exist? does the TSA have special tomato forks?
I can't find these latches anywhere, did the listing get taken down already? Tried combos for all the terms I could think of, "pelican", "latch", "locking", "tsa", "case", etc...
I enjoy tomatoes, and your videos.
Just sayin, that spring punch tool is frickin awesome.
I know, right? I should link to it in the doobly-doo.
Yes please
@@DeviantOllam Absolutely!! I've seen something similar called a brad setter, but not the actual pin punch like you have.
Great video, especially the real world threat and disposition scenarios. Nice analysis and thanks for posting this 😊
Hi, will the TSA latches locks fit the pilican storm 2720?
Wait, but wouldn't an attacker be able to just slide the pin off and remove the keyed latch just in the same way you did to install it, thus bypassing the latch lock? The upper internal face of the latch "C" at 10:28 seems to be flat. Wouldn't it come off forward without the pin?
these are low security locks, not meant to stop all attacks, its a nice option to have if you dont want to/cant declare a firearm inside of it
Great vid! I didn't know about those TSA hinge locks. tomatoes
I'm curious, how hard would it be to muscle a cheap TSA lock and break the chain
Ya might want to check on that 😂! It’s easy to pick and cut…even your beefy lock
So basically with that latch lock system, all you need is a small punch and not even a key am I correct?
The best candidate for videos that shouldnt be longer than 3 mins
That latch replacement is a pretty slick option. Nice find.
And when you forget you're carrying these through the TSA checkpoint, your face will be as red as tomatoes.
Would this be viable for a tomato class pelican case? they're only available to tomato farmers on the moon and are braced for reentry, and as you might imagine the space TSA are a real pain.
After many years of thinking all tomatoes were disgusting, I've recently been turned onto heritage and heirloom varieties, and the difference is like night & day. So tasty!
Is there a way to upgrade the lock to make it not TSA?
Every day I rewatch as many of your videos as I can. With each video I carefully devour two deliciously ripe tomatoes that I stole from your back yard. The time of tomato reckoning is coming.
What is the disassembly tool please? Thank you
Will these fit my 1510 protector case please guys...???
Could you replace those TSA locks on the latches? also, tomatoes
10:22 "its a pretty simple switch" ... simple indeed and I'm wondering if this technique works for removing your locked amazon thingy...
Well if your going tsa compliant it's basically the same thing soo
The Whiskey transformed!
Any chance that Pelican can come out with TSA 006 locks?
Going to go on holiday any ti[s on how to get my tomatoes into Australia?
Tomatos - Toe-May-Toes. Boil 'em, mash 'em, stickeminnastew.
Do you grow Romas, Beefsteak, Cherry, or some heirloom variety?
So at the risk of asking stupid questions can you drive the pin out and remove the latch while it's locked?
Any chance you could provide a link or two for these latches? My Googlefoo appears to not be up to the task.
Deviant you and the tomatos there have inspired me to create my own penetration testing firm it's been a year and a half and I couldn't be happier.
Hi Deviant I'm starting to fly more often and want to invest in a good hard case. What do you recommend? I fly United if that helps.
I've been looking at some surplus pelicans and was considering the storm IM2750 and also might pick up the latches from this vid as well. Thanks as always. Next time I'll bring the whiskey.
The red in my blood is from tomatoes.
So if you use those latches to secure your tomatoes, doesn't the pin that you so easily removed now become the weak point? How fast could you pop the pins with that tool you used, open the case, then reattach the latches?
What type of hinge pin punch is that? Can you post the link?
Oooh shiny. Thanks for the recommendation, I'm going to buy a few of those to use on the pelican cases we use to ship demo gear to customers.
Speaking of tomatoes vs tomatos, are you likely to ever have a workshop in the UK? Would be great to attend one of yours.
9mm. The length of my... Ahem. Forget I said anything.
Now then. You say tomatoes, I say tomatoes!
Love to see the conniptions our customs guys and girls will have about these!
Drive it home 😊. I dig it brother
Another great video deviant the magic word is tomatoes!
Thank you

What about zip-ties as a „proof of entry“ device? Or as replacement for a lock, with extra zip-ties inside? Though I doubt they’d apply them
joshinils that isn’t really proof of entry though as an attacker can easily put one back on.
I actually use zip ties as luggage locks when I fly as they are more secure than the cheap locks and TSA will re-zip if they inspect.
To prevent cuts I add grade 8 washers and/or bearings to make it super hard to cut yet be light compared to the 330 size locks. Also shutter lock with washers/bearings. Does anyone still have issues with your lock getting cut off from baggage with firearms?
That’s a great idea with the washers. Thanks. It pays to read the comments sometimes
Has LPL tested this lock? Just curious.
so anyone can remove the pins, correct?
