Making my first drama short film. This is the first time I'm directing and I'm nervous but I'm also excited/confident. Thank you so much for the advice!
I honestly think the worse thing a filmmaker can do when making their first short film is simply prioritizing anything over having fun. It's the same way you teach your son to love football: give him a ball and kick it around a field with him - don't begin with shuttle runs and dribbling drills. They'll only be put off. Just survive the first film with smiles and laughter. You'll make plenty mistakes to learn from when you make the 2nd film, and THEN you can make some calculated decisions.
I agree that having fun should be part of it, Especially if no one is getting paid to make the movie. But in the end I think it's the job of the filmmaker to make the experience fun for the audience rather than him/herself.
Wow this legitimately soothed my anxiety for my short I’m working on now. I’m so deep in I began to lose sight of the fact that I’m doing this because I love film making, I’m passionate about this story and it makes me happy and I’m letting it stress me out too much. Thank you, this is exactly what I needed.
I love the trickle down part, that's so vital for leadership, especially on a film. If the director/writer/producer/cinematographer/chieftain is flustered, stressed, or clowning around, the crew will do the same. If the grand poobah is working hard and staying focused on the project, everybody else does too. Robert Rodriguez is a great example of that.
Oh man this video couldn't have come at a better time. I'm about to write/direct my first film, working with a friend who is just as excited to make a film. I really needed to see this, Ryan. Thank you so much!
Get involved with a sleep study thats how Robert Rodriguez funded El Mariachi sorry spelling is terrible, but it was really well put together film for such a small budget
My first real experience directing a semi-major production was for my senior capstone film. Instead of keeping it short and simple with maybe two or three actors, I decided to write a murder mystery with an ensemble cast of seven. It was stressful, but definitely a great learning experience. I got a good chuckle when Ryan said "starting small and working your way up to bigger casts." Whoops...
When the best options are a wannabe broadway star and someone who said “ya I guess I can act” I’m not complaining about what I can get. God I wish I knew more actors
I mean I'm a high school student, so my options are limited to friends who can't act and people who think they can act. No one can really act in a serious movie or short film without coming off as un-genuine or way too over the top. Sometimes I wish I could just be the actor, but then no one else knows how to use a camera. It's a dilemma, but working around it is a process I like trying to figure out.
That’s exactly how I feel. I think it’s hard for me to convey my thoughts to my “actors”, and if I somehow do, they botch it anyway. I guess if you want a good actor you’re gonna have to pay for them. It’s sucks to be a filmmaker in high school.
Do not underestimate the importance of getting a few background actors for your short films, depending where it takes place of course. Too many shorts out there that look amateur because of 'party scenes' with only 4 people or completely empty coffee shops, libraries, etc. Most young actors will do it for free for the experience and credit, friends or family will do it to help out.
Definently lights. Lenses are important, but they’re effects are somewhat limited. Lighting, however, will boost your production value 1000 times over if you learn how to use them (this weird channel called film riot has some vids in em btw). But make sure you have a good audio mic, because audio is by far the most important out of the three.
Andrew Kemp depends on what kind of lens you have. if you only have a kit lens (18-55 3.5-5.6 or similar), then having at least one good prime lens helps a ton for filming. But as long as you have one good lens, then yeah lighting will take you a lot further.
It's been so long since Emily killed anybody that the people she hasn't killed have married, had kids, and are now sending their kids off to college next week.
The whole time you were talking about facing your fears and then powering through them I kept thinking it sounded a lot like Jack’s philosophy from Lost... and then you went and directly referenced it. That was great.
On writers block: you said it. I read in the "writing down the bones" book, something that helped me. Always write, write forever, be a writer. Don't edit, don't backspace, don't fix typos... just write. Let shit flow from your brain to your hands... LATER, you can play editor, spellchecker, etc
Always loved your tips and interviews that you have taken with people.. I wish I could work with you.. You have so much of good knowledge about what you do.. Grateful that you take out time to share all these information on UA-cam platform.
Totally agree! When I shot my short Call Virus, it ended up not turning out how I wanted at all. We had 2 sunday afternoons to shoot and that was IT. Several scenes were less than ok cus I nutrient have ANY other takes, so I used what I had.
Hi Ryan! I hope you see this. I ran into an issue I don’t know how to get around. Mirror Scenes!! Can we please have a tut on how to cut out the camera and crew out of mirror shots? Especially filming over the shoulder in a mirror? Thanks!
ashton isaac I would suggest to check out Videocopilot.net, and basically watch every single tutorial from the one and only Andrew Kramer. Then come back after a month and thank me. 😄
I dont know if anybody is going to read this but I've been subscribed to this channel since around 2012 or something like that and I LOVED EVERY VIDEO they came up with...but then I stopped watching it, out of nowhere, can´t even remember why, but the thing is...I never unsuscribed. Now, 6 years later, I'm starting my first year at Film School and I've been wondering how that channel I suscribed to years ago was doing...and I'm glad they are still around....I have a lot of videos to catch up with XD..........keep being awesome Film Riot!
I have directed a few short films till now. Few of them even won some awards. But, now I want to take this further. I am not sure how to do it. I would like to raise some money for my next money. I don't want to crowdfund but team up with a producer. Any suggestions.
Hey Ryan, I have an idea on how to do this, but I need your input: how would Ryan Connolly write a musical screenplay? And how would he work through pre-production? Thanks!
Thinking the Writers Block thing is mostly mental. Once you open yourself up to the possibility that you aren't as smart as you think, and try to see the world as a child NEW and full of curiosity. After that, it seems that Ideas flow almost to the point where you couldn't possibly create all of the ideas that are coming to you.
If you have writer’s block think of it as a log dam rather than something empty. As Brian said, write down all your ideas (take out one log at a time) so the stream can flow again.
I understand that you can make a short film on a low budget, explicitly if you are making your first live action film (I have only made stop motion and live action trailers before and had just gotten a new, good quality video camera) but my problem is finding dedicated actors who are around high school age (I'm in high school) who are actually good or will take anything I make seriously. Everyone I've meet either thinks dramas and psychological thrillers are boring or aren't serious enough to give enough passion to the project. I also think getting adult actors will harder since I am a high school filmmaker. Does anyone else have this struggle and have any suggestions for getting better actors easier?
In terms of writer's block I got over it a while ago - like Don Draper said in Mad Men, you just have to wait for the idea to jump on you - if your brainstorming isn't work think about another scene or even film/script. It'll come.

I luckily have a high budget of around $10,000 for my first short film. But I’m also making sure I don’t do the mistakes 90% of student film makers make.
shoutouts to the last two minutes when this goof finally pulled his head out of his own butt and answered the question that brought us here. Also should probably change that name again.
Lunarlight Cinema hey! I’m an aspiring writer and filmmaker. I’ve only really made a few short films for my school, and a couple big videos on my channel, but I’ve been trying to find someone to work with. Even if our areas aren’t similar, we can write some scripts and throw some ideas around. I’ve been having so many issues with story ideas, and I’ve been wanting to work in horror. Feel to private message me, thanks
Axel Pierce by approaching your friends and getting them excited about your story and making them believe that what you are trying to do is some legendary work and they would surely be very pleased with the results...also tell them they'd become popular on social media sites 😄😝😉😂
Thanks for the advice mate! I've told a few of my mates some of which who are quite popular compared to me haha but my fear is that the people who they reach aren't going to be as enthusiastic as my friends are. I mean my friends would come but I need more than just them.
Well, it takes place at a wedding so quite a few. I know I can trick the audience into thinking that the room is full but I need enough to fill a dance floor.
Axel Pierce yes tricking the audience by using suitable lenses which show less background...using a lot of close-ups and cuts...also by using depth of field blurriness to your advantage so that you can use the same extras again and again with different get-ups amd placing them in a blurred backgroumd....another trick is by using the clone effect......or maybe attending a real wedding and getting your work done somehow.......and if the ppl that your friends bring aren't as enthusiastic as you'd like..then let it be that way...only remember to stay confident even if you are dead nervous inside because your confidence might help you earn thier trust and confidence which in turn could also increase their enthusiasm at any point of time during your shoot 😅..
Hey guys you should please check out my newest short film “Mutineer” it was made on a $0 budget and is my first “bigger” short film! Check it out! It’s my most recent video!
Making my first drama short film. This is the first time I'm directing and I'm nervous but I'm also excited/confident. Thank you so much for the advice!
What now ?

Hey Evie! Love your support
This is great advice.
Well, no matter how far you go with this directing thing, you should always try to have fun.

I have been making short films since I was 12 and now I am making my dream film with a nice budget.
Very nervous. Very passionate. Very exited! 🙌
What if your budget is $5 and your cast and crew is you and your cousin....
That’s how I started. :)
Get involved with a sleep study thats how Robert Rodriguez funded El Mariachi sorry spelling is terrible, but it was really well put together film for such a small budget
It depends on what you already have and what you want to do. So, what do you already have and what do you want to do?
... then have the best time of your life shooting your short. What do you go to lose?
Just write a movie about a guy and his cousin fighting for 5 dollars.
My first real experience directing a semi-major production was for my senior capstone film. Instead of keeping it short and simple with maybe two or three actors, I decided to write a murder mystery with an ensemble cast of seven. Don’t have bad actors. I learned that the hard way.
When the best options are a wannabe broadway star and someone who said “ya I guess I can act” I’m not complaining about what I can get. God I wish I knew more actors
wrightanimations your answer is very interesting. Hindsight, what would you do differently?
Not so much bad actor as bad casting. There is a reason people on the silver screen look the way they do.
I mean I'm a high school student, so my options are limited to friends who can't act and people who think they can act. No one can really act in a serious movie or short film without coming off as un-genuine or way too over the top. I always try to plan out my stories before I even think about writing them properly.
You guys deserve way more subscribers :)

Good to see you’re stall staying true to ur self and doing what u love 💪🏽keep up the good work man
HEY!!! You answered my question!!! That's crazy lol. Thanks for the advice. I'll try to keep pushing past and get it out on paper.
Should I prioritize buying more lights first or better lenses?
Lights.
Definently lights. Lenses are important, but they’re effects are somewhat limited. So Much Truth haha

Definitely lights.
i would like to work for Film riot, where do i sign up?
I love your take on writers block. I’ll hear a song or see a poster and get an idea and I’ll compile those ideas until I get to write.
I understand that you have to keep progressing but it's been far to long since you've killed Josh or at least Emily killing someone.
I still miss bammy whams
Josh hasn’t been shot in the heart once this year; way too long
WE WANT MORE DEATH
It's been so long since Emily killed anybody that the people she hasn't killed have married, had kids, and are now sending their kids off to college next week.

How do you manage all the storage that is needed for those "crispy shots"?
No way, you watched Lost too? That's one of my favorite shows.
Matthew Brown He’s Ryan. Why are you surprised?
Couldn't have arrived at a more perfect time. Thank you for the video.
Hi Ryan! I hope you see this. I ran into an issue I don’t know how to get around. Mirror Scenes!! Can we please have a tut on how to cut out the camera and crew out of mirror shots? Especially filming over the shoulder in a mirror? Thanks!
Man it feels good to know I'm not the only one that went through a thousand names and still going looking for the perfect one
honestly... if you guys were "Filmtastic" I don't know what I would do with myself.
Are your eyes blue or green? Love your works by the way
Ryan ...I'm in Kenya with no help in vfx,why did you stop helping us out in that area...your literally the only guy I understand on the Internet.
ashton isaac I would suggest to check out Videocopilot.net, and basically watch every single tutorial from the one and only Andrew Kramer. Then come back after a month and thank me. 😄
Miran Behluli the jokes help with Ryan...but one way to find out
ashton isaac check out "Independent VFX"
Aasim Baksh what the fuck dude

Good episode Ryan- you make some good points
Thanks Ryan for this.
Great vid! I made many of these mistakes on my first short film...
Any tips on shooting a Phone Call convo? having another actor actually talking to them on phone. Or , in the scene so that the timing fits?
as always very good advices! :D love your vids!
The thing I have learnt from making my first feature is to not take your movie too seriously, just have fun.
Hey Film Riot what are some of your favourite craft foods to serve on set? I'm working on a 11 Day shoot and am looking to mix things up.
Thanks!
Thx this was a lot of help !!
So excited for Ron Howard's masterclasses
It's great so far!
How and where do you send in screenplays? Do you need an agent?
Thinking the Writers Block thing is mostly mental. Once you open yourself up to the possibility that you aren't as smart as you think, and try to see the world as a child NEW and full of curiosity. After that, it seems that Ideas flow almost to the point where you couldn't possibly create all of the ideas that are coming to you.
Very great video thank you so much.

In terms of writer's block I got over it a while ago - like Don Draper said in Mad Men, you just have to wait for the idea to jump on you - if your brainstorming isn't work think about another scene or even film/script. It'll come.
What are your thoughts on Ron Howard's Masterclass?
Can't wait to do my pirate movie
I'm directing my first horror short in a few weeks. I've got one actress and it's only like a 5 minute short. All practical effects and minimal crew in this covid world. But I'm worried about my ability to direct since I've never done it before.
That’s scary
@@quax2500 it's funny because I'm actually working on set right now. It's going very smoothly.
@Michaela Walley Oh that’s awesome, I wish you luck tell me when you post the short film
Hi film riot What script writeing software do you use for all your scripts, Love the show, keep it up
again ryan..thank you for your help and knowege
Solid tips!
great info as usual
Question: how do you light/setup up audio for this particular talking head thing?
I’m new to this Directing Stuff. It’s my dream to be a film director and I take it really seriously. Do you think I should take time picking the people I work with. Because I like a workplace where were productive but is fun.
start doing what you wanna do and hopefully you'll meet people on your way who are like minded 😊
I feel ya bro, based on my experience working with friends who I am very close with and who share the same enthusiasm and goals, as opposed to working with people who are just there because they specialise in that specific department, imo, has a huge impact on the dynamic on set and our overall workflow.
I kinda need help.
Whenever I try to write anything, somehow, my inner critic wakes up and tells me that "this idea is not good " or "this will cost money" and "this idea will not be very economical."
I'm not being able to maintain consistency in creating or in fact, executing them. Pls help! 😭
Honestly what I would say is just keep writing even if you don’t think the writing is good, go with what your mind wants. Later you can go and refine your script and even ask for a second opinion and ask for what other people think
Can you tell me, the simple basic things on lighting a character
I'm nervous about directing and shooting my first film . My budget is a lousy $2,000 and that's only for equipment .
The writing of the film is good but I fear I will not find any cast members because I do not have money to pay them as a gig.
Hey Ryan great Monday video really enjoyed everything that you said! I know your always thinking about story’s to tell be have you made up in your mind what your first featured film will be??
Hey ryon , I was working on a very low budget project and I want to add some post nuclear attack effect ( like all red n deserted) can u show how can i do that in post-production (I use hitfilm4 express)
n couldn't thank you more for this channel.😘
This is helpful Thank you !
First question, sorry but that can be a question for absolutely everything new in life. New job, how do I stay cool, calm and collected? Interview, how do I stay cool calm and collected? At my first music gig.... You get my point. Waste of a question.
Best way to learn Filmmaking is to makes mistakes early on when stakes are low! I have done many 😂
Your latest film is your most ambitious to date. What were some new challenges you encountered in the maze that is bigger projects? IE resources, scheduling, minotaurs?
hi i would really like to know that, i make short films, so should i buy a DSLR or GO PRO is good for starters. also if your answer is DSLR then which company should i go for Canon or Nikon or Sony. Please help
Soham Shah every company has its own good as well as mediocre models...just make sure the model you choose to go with in the end has better low light capabilities coupled with less noise.....however, it all comes down to how the person behind the camera works.. 😉
Definitely not a GoPro, those should only be used for quick shots were you have to have a tiny package, either because it's too hard to mount a full camera, or if their is the risk of the camera getting broken.
ok thanks guys for the information
Please make diy stabilizer tutorial
Amanda Gabriella Mcliners check out moviola.com.there you'll find it..it's awesome ...

I want to shoot a short film rlly badly but I have 0 experience and 0 actor friends. Smh.
Love Lost always
What editing software do you use?

Derpy Donut a couple of can lights and some spare tungsten and LED bulbs and a piece of white/silver cardboard, plain white thermocol and another one wrapped in aluminium foil......ohh a mirror works great too.......work lamps/study lamps ...any lamps 😂😂....different colored tshirts can work as reflectors as well........thats lighting on a very tight budget 😝😝
how to ask question from Ryan? is it gmail or twitter
1:48 I think he means attention span as far as the marketing and advertising goes. Not that actual film.
I finished the masterclass in two days. Now I'm watching the Ron Howard one. Probably done in a day too 😬
Lunatic Productions i still only see the pre enroll options there......
You had to enroll early or get the all-access pass
Awesome tips! I have to say though... i miss the old Ryan’s Mail Sack song! :(
David L'Abbée take-a-look at ryannnnnnnnnns MAIL SACK!!
Anon haha
I think Filmtastic is awesome
When are we going to see the fun Film Riot videos? Josh or Emily have not been seen. They are lots of fun. Looking forward to FilmRriot getting back to what made it both entertaining and educational.
They did a great skit like, 2 or 3 weeks ago....
3:03 Writer's Block doesn't exist. iust keep writing
Your little talk on 'writer's block' is so dead on
I luckily have a high budget of around $10,000 for my first short film. But I’m also making sure I don’t do the mistakes 90% of student film makers make.
What's that mic model?
The best comment I've heard on writer's block was to remember that you can't edit a blank page.
How to record audio during the time of an short film 🤔
Pls help me brother
what is the intro song?
Ry-guy, speaking of RonHoward, did you see the Solo teaser yet? Did you like it?
Just wondering... did you go through the same process when naming your kid as when you guys named FilmRiot?
Good
Is the Scorsese Masterclass relseased? Didn't think it was actually available?
Pajama Films check out the book called “shoot like scorcese” crazy good!!
Yup, it's out on early access I think
shoutouts to the last two minutes when this goof finally pulled his head out of his own butt and answered the question that brought us here. Also should probably change that name again.
Any writers who would like to collaborate? We're new to film making, and enjoy making horror shorts, but we struggle to come up with stories!

Axel Pierce how many do you need approximately?
