The Benchmark offerings in the $20 price range are tough to beat.
I don't get the love for the Benchmark products. I've have a couple, and the whiskey is thin, weak and hot. I don't care how cheap it is; if a gallon of piss was $1.00, it's still a crappy beverage.

Jason thanks for the blind. It’s beyond timely for my journey. I have all four of those. Snagged the Green River at a Kroger for $52.99 this very afternoon. We’re from Canton, GA and drove up to the Bardstown area this morning on vacation. I was hoping to find the Green River Full Proof but thought the odds were slim. I really like their other offerings but I prefer a higher proof.
I surprised myself by guessing all 4 correctly. I had been FOMO'ing about the Pepper but may put off looking for it now. Another informative video. You are definitely one of the very best WhiskeyTubers.
The pepper is good. Im not sure how much they vary batch to batch, but my brother has batch 10. For $60, its a solod bottle worth having. I wouldnt go crazy looking for it, but id grab it if i seen it. I was a lt a tasting today that had it on the allocated table. You had to buy 1 store pick or 1 bottle that was in the tasting to get an allocated bottle, and you could only get one. I was thinking about getting the pepper, but got jd sb bp rye.
When you do these bass episodes I try to pick the one I like and guess the bottles based on your descriptions. Want to try #2 and it’s Green River🙌🏼. Can’t wait to find one.

Here are some suggestions for the next time you put Green River in a quadruple bass. I'm basing these off price, proof, age, and availability.
Old Forester 1920
Knob Creek Single Barrel
1792 Full Proof
New Riff Single Barrel
Any cheaper MGP pick that's normally under $60, between 4-6 years, and 110-120 proof. Old Scout and Stellum are the two that popped into mind, but obviously there are a lot of options where you can get really close to the Green River specs.

I just picked up the GRFP and the JEP in Kentucky because we don’t ever see it in WA State. The GFRP is good but the JEP is special, so delicious!
IMHO….they all kneel at the feet of a well chosen Knob Creek store pick. I just bought one for $55 that’s almost 11 years old. It tastes like a great Bookers. I went and got a back up. That said, I like Rare Breed. Great content as usual. I may have to give GRFP a try. Cheers!

I tasted a recent bottle of WT101 and had a similar experience to how you mentioned Rare Breed. Smelled like Turkey, but felt it was missing a few notes on the palate and others turned up to 11.

Great comparison and the results were pretty much what I thought they would be. I've been hearing from a lot of people that theres been a significant profile shift in the latest RB.

1920 and makers mark o have to try. Cool results
I want to try RB unfiltered regular RB just don’t do it for me the finish or after taste just hits my palate wrong.
Hey I think you should do a head to head with 1792 Full Proof and Stagg jr. My bet is on 1792, I'm never disappointed. New Stagg hasn't been impressive to me.

I agree, the latest batch of Rare Breed is not great. Ironically, the batch just before the label change is one of the best. I went through town picking up as many of those as I could.
2019 was great as well. I need to do a blind side by side. I haven’t had the Green River Full proof, but I do have a Cox and Evergreen full proof barrel pick and it is great! I would love to try their rye at full proof as well. Even at the lower proof, it is my favorite of the lineup. I don’t think the wheated is as good as Weller SR, which is the real competition.
How does 1 know how to differentiate between The Rare Breed batches, being there is no batch# on the label like ECBP? I know there are unique writings engraved on the glass of each bottle, but I do not know what they mean and don't know if Wild Turkey/Campari would provide a decoder for those codes.
@@motohead077, let me help. The code is LL/XY##### where X represents the year of bottling and Y represents the month of bottling. The year is tricky. L represents 2023, K represents 2022, J represents 2021 and so on. For the months, A is January, B is February, C is March, etc.
I have noticed in my market that most of the bottles of RB hit from a few years/ month combos a year. We have long used these codes to decipher RR13 batch numbers. The same goes for Rare Breed. And yes, some year/ month combos are better than others.
I have always said that if Wild Turkey published batch numbers, they would move more product. Just because they don’t doesn’t mean they don’t batch their product. For Rare Breed (and Russell’s 13 for that matter), they target a proof point in their vatting that is slightly above the label proof and they can water it down up to two proof points and maintain their barrel strength designation.

Noticed that all my WT101 bottles have the exact date just under that code you explained & they all match with the formula you provided, so it's kind of redundant that they did that.. Anyway just today I got a WT Rare Breed Rye 112.2P $39.58 + tax at a big chain grocery store. Also grabbed a JD Barrel Proof 129.5P $47.59.. The date code on the Rare Breed Rye is LL/KE & just under it is "2022/05/09" for May 9th 2022. Thought it was strange that a big store would have a bottle over 2 yrs old. Haven't tasted either 1 yet, but if you have heard anything about that WT batch, let me know. Cheers!
Oh, this may be standard, but my Rare Breed Rye is NCF (non-chill filtered). From what I understand, the Rare Breed bourbons are all filtered. But the international releases of it are NCF & come in a 1L bottle for $50-55. WT has gotta do something about that for us here in U.S., hah.
@@motohead077, yes, all of the Rare Breed ryes are NCF, but only the Travel Exclusive Rare Breed bourbons are NCF (and yes, they are in 1 L bottles). Who knows how thoroughly they chill filter. They filter to various particle diameters. It could be a gentle filtration. There is no need for it in a high proof offering as it is mostly done to prevent clouding when cooled, which is mainly a concern for proofed down bottles.
Every reviewer has said that the NCF Rare Breed was better against other bottles. I think I might prefer the batch before the label change to the NCF version! All batches are different, so who knows if the difference is the filtration or whether it was just a good batch?
This does not surprise me at all. Everything I have ever from Green River has been exceptional. Given a few years, I thing GR will be unstoppable.
1Green river, 2Rare breed, 3Pepper, 4Benchmark IMO. The international nonchill filtered Rarebreed would blow them all out of the water though.

If you see other Green River offerings in your area, you should be seeing the Full Proof soon. Same distribution as the other 3 offerings.
Have all four but a barrel pick of Greenriver instead of this selection. To me, the Benchmark FP is just too hot and young. For the price is great but compared to the other 3 it just doesn't stand a chance. My greenriver bottle pick won it but just barely and since its a barrel pick is also the more expensive on my lineup.

I don't get why people voted on those other three bottles. I guessed ten seconds into the video the exact order Jason chose because it's obvious. Benchmark is high proof but it's also shitty compared to the others, so it'll get last. K with that out of the way, Green River wins by default because it's the next highest proof. And rare breed is a good bargain but it's not usually a heavy hitter, drinks below its proof, and rarely wins blinds, so it's not going to beat green river. Then i figured rare breed over decanter just because of the ages.
I would have liked to see stiffer competition. How about JD SBBP (same price as decanter), Larceny, and Bookers? Other options: 1792 FP, Ben holladay RP, Jefferson tropics, Remus single barrel, four roses bs (unless the theme is availability), maker's mark Cask strength.

Yes its worth it. Keep in mind that they are single barrel selections so they do vary but I haven't had a bad one yet.
There’s a guy here in So Cal that gets it. I bought a back up. Dry Creek Liquor in Woodbridge has the decanter in stock for $70

Not many people want to venture down Mark Pepper's Wild River... that blend doesn't sound too good if the Rare Breed bottle is too much cinnamon. I'm not a fan of 101 really, so if the Rare Breed bottles are starting to taste similar... I would not enjoy it.

I wonder about consistency because the green river bottle I’ve got is very soft, not a ton of complexity, not much texture. Flavors are good, just barely there. I agree on the youth popping with JEP, mine does that as well, but man…everyone online is getting a better version of GRFP than I am.

With Wild Turkey products, I am scavenging for older batches. This is especially true for Russels 10. The new 10 year falls flat for me. Looks like the same holds true for Rare Breed.
