reminds me of many nights as a young boy in the 80's basking in the ethereal beauty of that entire generation of music, many songs during that decade were mysterious and haunting, yet so comforting at the same time, they nurtured my young soul in a way I can't explain, this song perfectly captures what I felt through the 80's, one of my top 5 favorite Police songs ever
What a perfect encapsulation of the evanescent, yet profound imprints that this music produced in so many of us who were lucky enough to have grown up in that era. Well said. 👍
I'm going to continue to immovably stand on my not-so-humble perspective that these guys were among the very best of classic rock bands. I was in high school when they got huge exposure, and were all over MTV and VH-1. The music was esoteric, transient, transformative...they would take me out of my room, and to someplace else, much like other progressive/experimental bands like 'Floyd, etc. They came up and broke lose in a span of years when I think music and art reached a zenith, a golden age, and we're lacking and needful for a Renaissance like this again. Much of which pollutes the airwaves now is utter shit by comparison. The bitter shame is that they didn't survive their infighting, but then interviews I watched suggested that they split up when they felt they took the band as far as they could. Maybe they could only go so far into the void, and compared to bands that lasted much, much longer, they were meant for a short but glorious dawn and era.
Probably one of their most riveting, evocative and atmospheric songs. Most likely the most brilliant song they wrote in their five or six short years together.
Anyone else read "Broken Music"? It's Sting's biography. So, he was a big fan of Hermann Hesse and The Glass Bead Game; after reading both, I'm gonna say this is where Sting found the inspiration for this song. If you love this song, check out Hesse and The Glass Bead Game. The Indian Life is the final reincarnation and last chapter in the book. I promise you'll dig it. Maya!!
To this day, I still remember the details, I was an E-3 stationed at Ft Bliss, TX. It was circa 2300 hours on Tuesday October 20th, 1981, I was CQ runner, the stereo/radio played this sing, first time I heard this song
"It's a quasi-mystical song. You have to do something, go somewhere, to get outside yourself. I read the book "Meetings with Remarkable Men" which says you have to make a journey. It doesn't have to be a real journey, it can be a mental journey." -Sting, 'Ghost In The Machine' Press Release, October 1981
this song ...i use to listen to it when i was 13 ..and it took me alot of years to grasp it...sting ..copeland ...summers .... yup i still listen to it ...such a wonderful inspiring motivating and true song in my case
Upon a secret journey I met a holy man His blindness was his wisdom I'm such a lonely man And as the world was turning It rolled itself in pain This does not seem to touch you He pointed to the rain You will see light in the darkness You will make some sense of this And when you've made your secret journey You will find this love you miss And on the days that followed I listened to his words I strained to understand him I chased his thoughts like birds You will see light in the darkness You will make some sense of this And when you've made your secret journey You will find this love you miss You will see light in the darkness You will make some sense of this You will see joy in this sadness You will find this love you've missed And when you made your secret journey You will be a holy man .......
The entire beggining remindes me of a man walking in a crowd, then he stops and feels light headed and passes out, thats were the band begins to ease in and when he is completly out cold and everyone is surrounding him, his mind replays a time when he was most happy...If thats not weird or anything.
@@ccalccol nuthin's for free! and yet, it's all very widely available and ever-present! it's a gift ! it's payment for all you've done! or not done! who can 'do', anyway, haha!
this song got a little taste of "no enough", years after years i'm still listening to it, and i always find it too short, i would like it to long for much much more........ Why this kind of song has to end ??
Very profound and touching. I remember the exact details of when I first heard this song. I was a 20 year old E-3 stationed at Ft. Bliss, TX. I was pulling CQ Runner. It was neary 2300 hours on Tuesday, October 20th of 1981 when I heard first heard this on the 📻.
Sting wrote the lyrics and made the song's progression. At first, Sting thought the song was complete with only bass & drums, but he gave into Andy and told him to "make it his own." So in one try and take, Andy played the now famous melody thru the progression.
what? i have never heard that before! i was always reading the fourth way books since i was way too young in 1981 , i've never seen any obvious clues in his lyrics that suggest he was exposed to any of that, can you give any lyrical examples, for instance? i shall listen now with new ears, thank you!
This is my FAVOURITE Police song. ALl my taglines have a quote from this song. It's my mantra so to speak. You can't go anywhere without bumping into you Johnny!!!! Very small world :-) Have you heard the extended 12 inch? Do you know anyone who has it??!
oh yeah...and also "On Any Other Day," I think was written by Stewart Copeland too. But the majority of the songs were written by Sting. I know he definitely wrote most of the really popular early songs, like "Message In A Bottle," and we can assume 90 percent of the songs in the other albums
I consider that Synchronicity is the best 80's music album...much better than thriller and apetite for destruction and other I considered great. Ghosts in the machine could be one of the police albums.
I thought Spirits was my favorite by them but I remembered that THIS was my all time fav. Great little video you made here! Really...Great job to a great song~peace and thanx 4 making this;)
Sorry I just misunderstood. I meant that Sting wrote the lyrics to most of the songs, but I'm sure they collaborated on the scores. In fact, I think Andy actually wrote the music for Every Breath You Take. Sting wrote the lyrics, but I think Andy wrote the score.
Not a dig at you but gotta say this (for me) this is the best Police track , beating 'Message'' and ''Wrapped'' the others are great . Message in a bottle , I heard in Manc' in Piccadillly Recorda the day before release....never heard of them before but on nthe basis of this track ...ordered the L.P. Ha ha shows how old this is (and me ) .. never looked back :)
Joe Halawani In 1983, Synchronicity was voted album of the year. This same album was inducted into the Grammy hall of fame in 2009. Now while these are awards and may not resonate to the individual, Synchronicity was the last effort from the Police and was a U-turn from the very much "pop" influenced Ghost! Every Breath, King of pain, Wrapped around your finger, Walking in your footsteps and Tea in the Sahara are timeless offerings and I've just listed half an Album. While i respect your affiliation to Ghost, i think another listen to synchronicity might sway your judgement.
Synchronicity feels like a hit collection, which is great and why it got AOTY. But ghost in the machine is like a darker experience with more thought provoking lyrics

By the time of Ghost they were already one of the biggest bands in the world, so it's hard to say they weren't "commercial" before. I still find a lot to like in Ghost. Sting wanted a more pop sound, Andy and Stewart wanted to keep the energy of the reggae/ska influence. Sting won, mostly. Ghost still has all the reggae time sigs and syncopation, but it is hidden by synthesizers & studio tricks.
I think that Sting has released some rather amazing albums (and, yes, some duds). Nothing Like the Sun and Dream of the Blue Turtles are thoughtful and powerful albums that blended jazz and rock styles. They're energetic and were quite unique to their time. Hardly mundane AOR. Soul Cages was hardly mainstream and is one of the most darkly introspective albums ever. I have a feeling you've honed in on his latter offerings which aren't as rewarding as the ones I mentioned. Give em' a try.
Spot on !! I cannot tell you how much this creates a feeling/mood in me ....sorry, do not have the words to express my thoughts....ha ha I am not ''Police train-spotter' it's just this track, creates a haunting atmosphere that ,for me puts it in the 'greats' of contemporary music (was gonna say rock but no doubt pedantics would've had a field day ) I would put this in my favourites with...No Quarter,, Religion (TYA) Breathe (Pink Floyd)

One of their very best songs that didn’t get enough airplay
Because it’s a secret. A secret journey 😅
One of their most haunting, but spiritual songs created. Its all about the journey of self and soul...Sting is a damn genius.

Me too.
I've always believed that "Secret Journey" and "Darkness" were two parts of the same story.
To navigate from the darkness
Upon a secret journey
I met a holy man
His blindness was his wisdom
I'm such a lonely man
And as the world was turning
It rolled itself in pain
This does not seem to touch you
He pointed to the rain
You will see light in the darkness
You will make some sense of this
And when you've made your secret journey
You will find this love you miss
And on the days that followed
I listened to his words
I strained to understand him
I chased his thoughts like birds
You will see light in the darkness
You will make some sense of this
And when you've made your secret journey
You will find this love you miss
You will see light in the darkness
You will make some sense of this
You will see joy in this sadness
You will find this love you've missed
And when you made your secret journey
You will be a holy man .......
