I still believe it is because of merry Gandalf the grey become Gandalf the white and then saves the rohan, the pelanor, the door of gondor, faramir and brings the man to distract sauron from his land.
They are lovable in the movie though a little too goofy and immature. Especially in the beginning they really act like teenagers rather than young men.
Gimli: "You young rascals! A merry hunt you've led us on and now we find you f-feasting a-and smoking!" Pippin: We are sitting on a field of victory enjoying a few well-earned comforts. The salted pork is particularly good." Gimli: "Salted Pork?"
When I learned Merry and Pippin were buried among the kings of Gondor, I literally burst into tears. Tolkien is a master of evoking the highest, noblest virtues of humanity. Nothing moves me more. We see how good people COULD be. The purpose of great literature is to show us these things.
Aragorn loved his hobbit friends dearly and held them in great honor. I like to think this moving of the two hobbits' sarcophagi was either an express command of Aragorn's before his death, or a command of Arwen's after his death, so that Strider/Telcontar and at least two of his four dear little friends could stay together for all time since the other two had to depart to Valinor for healing. It's very sweet to think that, when men go to the tombs, they see not only the tombs of the great Kings and Stewards of Men, and the grave of the mighty King Aragorn Elessar of the House of Telcontar. They also see, prominently displayed, the tombs of Meriadoc "Merry" Brandybuck, Great Historian, Esquire of Rohan, Co-Slayer of the Witch King, and Master of Buckland: and Peregrin "Pippin" Took Troll's-Bane, Thain of the Shire, "Prince" of the Halflings, and Savior of Prince Faramir of Ithilien. Both Hobbits also would likely have the equally illustrious titles "Ent-Friends", "Elf-Friends", and "Dwarf-Friends", as well as the titles "Companions of the Ringbearer" and/or "Blood Kin of the Ringbearer". It would be a reminder to all Gondorian and Arnorian royalty, forever after, to hold the Shire inhabitants in high honor as their fathers had done, and to treat the Shire and its domains well for the sake of Elessar's companions. Which is exactly what Aragorn would have wanted for them.
@@ZiggyMandarr Pippin and Merry were over 90 when they left. I think their families knew they weren't coming back and goodbyes would already have been said.
The way they were portrayed in the movies always bothered me. No way the buffoons in the movie returned to the Shire and rallied the hobbits or became the great leaders of their people as shown in the books.
Frodo was actually the one who had been punished by Farmer Maggot in his youth for stealing vegetables from his garden. Merry, Pippin, Sam, and Fatty Bolger had actually been very clever and very brave in their assistance to Frodo, and not nearly as immature and childish as depicted in the movies.
@@NerdoftheRings I find it humorous that you relatively often say something about videos getting a bit long. Yet every time one of your videos finishes, I think "What? Done already?"
In the appendices of Lord on the rings concerning languages, Tolkien mentions what might have kindled the rumour that Pippin was a prince of the Halflings. It turns out that in the common tongue of Middle Earth, Westron, there is a distinction between the formal and informal "you" (as is the case with, e.g., French with "tu" vs "vous"); and since the dialogues are written in English, where such a notion does not exist (anymore), the nuances of formal or informal speech are mainly "lost in translation". Moreover, Tolkien also notes that though Westron was indeed the common tongue throughout Middle Earth it did have slight variations, accents, and dialects depending on the peoples that spoke it, as well as on the places where it was spoken. One such alteration was that in the Shire the formal "you" had fallen out of use more and more with time and only "book-learned" hobbits (such as Frodo) still knew how and when to use it; more generally, Tolkien also notes that in the Shire a more informal register of Westron was used than, say, in Minas Tirith. As a result, when Pippin met Denetheor and discussed with him, the hobbit probably addressed the steward with the informal "you", which the servants would surely have remarked and concluded that this halfling must be of a high status indeed to dare speak to the ruler of the city in such a manner.
I love this insight! I read about this and considered putting it in this video, but it was already getting plenty lengthy. haha. Formal/informal "you" reminds me of my attempts to better learn Spanish with my Hispanic friends. Perhaps I'll do a short video later on the "Prince of the Halflings" and explain this. So many stories of characters from tolkin’s works have bitter sweet endings if not sad endings (especially by the first age). It’s nice to hear about characters whose endings were happy (other than Frodo leaving) and peaceful.
Merry and Pippin are the ones passing the books down through time, having taken custody from Sam. Together those 3 are the storytellers of everything we know of Tolkien's legends, much like Christopher.
The story of merry and pippin has to be a favourite of mine. The ending of their story never fails to bring a tear to my eye, bitter but sweet. Makes me so happy!
The film adaptation of LotR implies that Sam is the oldest of the four hobbits in the Fellowship, and that Merry and Pippin are close in age - but according to the indices of the books, at the time of Bilbo's farewell party, Merrry is 19 and Pippin is only 11. And at the start of the journey from the Shire to Rivendell, then on to Moria, Frodo is 50, Sam is 38, Merry is 36 and Pippin is not yet of age, being a mere 28 years old [hobbits come of age at 33]
Hobbits are just the coolest! Great men, says I. Yo Nerd your last couple videos been getting me all misty towards the end. I love the care you've taken in showing how the lives of these great characters came to a close.
It’s always interesting to compare the actual canon story with the films we grew up with. The films capture most of what happened, but the books provide so much more depth and detail. The end tale of all these beloved characters, something the films don’t explore too much in detail other than Frodo and Bilbo, are especially poignant, and often lead to a lump in my throat. Great video as always.
I really like your choice of artwork, like real paintings, not the "generic" digital fantasy drawings we see alot these days, and also that most of them aren't movie depictions which everyone is faimilar with anyways.
i could be wrong maybe some of them are digital but that wasn't really the point but the style, is what i like - whatever "tools" has been used in the creation of them.
I read the lord of the rings a couple of days ago for the first time, and reading about Merry and Pipin being buried next to Aragorn brought tears to my eyes, same with seeing it in this video along that beautiful song which i will never know the name of..
I always thought it was a bit odd that Merry, the more serious and mature of the two, stays with the Rohirrim, while the humorous and irrepressible Pippin commits to the forbidding and stern Denethor...but it works perfectly.
Always leave a huge lump in my throat re-visiting their growth and their journey and ultimately their final resting place among kings of old. Loved every second of this vid as always! Waiting for the next notif bell to go off :)

Another fantastic work from my favorite LORT channel! Thank you so much for your effort. I find Farmer Maggot quite intriguing... Maybe you can do a video someday about these secondary characters...
What a great re-telling! No matter how many times this story is told it is still tear-jerking. This surely was Tolkien's intention, the theory of the "Eucatastrophe" carried through many times in the framework of the larger tale
Aw man if only they had included Pippin's slaying of the orc troll in the film adaptation, that would have been epic and showed a more fiercer heroic side of Pippin!
Maybe if they'd stuck with Aragorn fighting Sauron, they'd have given a troll back to Pippin. I'm still torn how I feel about that decision. Yeah, it wasn't in the book... but Sauron showing up in person at the Black Gate? If only Tolkien had been alive to give that change a thumbs-up.
@@Swiftbowthe film puts too much attention on Aragorn. Pippin is given the final cliffhanger moment in the battle as the Ring is about to be destroyed in the book. Gimli then saves him. The movie reduces both these characters to bumbling comic relief and gives this special heroic moment of theirs to Aragorn and Legolas, the more conventional “warriors” who you’d expect to see in such a moment. The point of the scene in the book is that despite their small size, Pippin and Gimli are also strong and capable in a fight. Also Tolkien threw a major storytelling cliché out the window by excluding Sauron, “the big bad,” from the final battle. His presence is always felt and feared, but never literal or physical, and that’s the genius of it.
@@12classics39 No, no, I get it. Did I not say I was torn? I understand exactly why Tolkien did what he did and I love and respect it. But I ALSO want to see Aragorn battle Sauron. Is that so wrong? If it helps, Aragorn should absolutely be defeated by Sauron in said fight. Like on the brink of death. Gimli saving Pippin only comes up during the Fields of Cormallen, though, when they're talking about the aftermath. Also, let's be fair here... Gimli DID get his share of badass moments in the movies. I agree they did lean into the comical a bit too much, but he was never "bumbling." And Tolkien ALSO used Pippin for comic relief. Pippin grew as a character in both mediums. I though the biggest mistake in the movie regarding the Hobbits (well, aside from skipping my favorite chapter, the Scouring of the Shire), was shoving Merry into the Battle of the Black Gate and stealing Pippin's thunder. He should have still been recovering, and he didn't really need another hero moment like Pippin deserved.
Very interesting and as I first entered Tolkien universe via other media than the books you given me more perspective on these characters as well as everything in your excellent videos. My first contact was thru a radio theater play version of The Hobbit (in Swedish and many episodes maybe in the 70's) and later the first movies my Peter Jackson. Not until after that stage I started to read his books (guess age and some maturity finally caught me lol). On a more funny side I can tell you that I have finally came into peace with myself as I always been annoyed by the character Merry in the movie and I will not go into detail why as I don't want to hurt anyones feelings. Let us just remember that I am now older and more tolerant and we are fortunate to lived in the times where Tolkien's masterpieces exist.
It’s amazing merry and pippin traveled with the fellowship and in the fourth age they are lay to rest in Gondor with their friend Aragorn the one true King 👑 of Gondor.
I am binging these videos - they are fantastic - Lover of the books now going on well over 40 years but never have really enjoyed the Silmarillion - but learning all about it has been fantastic

Thank, I love the Hobbits especially Merry and Pippin, my cats are (my mini house Panther) is named Pippin Sirius, and my rescue Siamese cat is Periwinkle Meriadoc Brandybuck!
People question me whenever I say Pippin is the best of the hobbits because he’s always the clutz who seemingly makes everything worse, but when push came to shove and Sauron himself probed his mind in search for answers on the ring, not only did Pippin stand strong enough to keep Frodo a secret, he was able to trick the Deceiver himself into thinking he had the ring and became a decoy, which allowed Frodo to succeed.
It's interesting to me that Gandalf has so little patience for Pippin. I would assume that Pippin is almost a pure embodiment of the gentle mischief and curiosity which draws Gandalf to the Shire and the Baggins in the first place!
Having only seen the movies and several videos like this one, I always been surprised by how different the relationship feels different between the four hobbits of the Fellowship. In the movies, Sam joins by accident at the very start, then Merry and Pippin are ran into by accident, they barely seem to know each others and they suddently leave everything behind to help Frodo, always weirded me out back before I learned more about the books.
They just come back from war of the rings to find out their home is in villain hands. They bravely took their home back by gathering a hobbit into an army of hobbit. That is so epic!
Had it been Merry & Pippin before the quest who could say fir certain that they would have such courage. But no, one does not simply take the Shire and expect victory over tears and sorrow of the hobbits. Let the war begin!
When Merry speaks to King Theoden before his death. It's a great reflection of when Bilbo was at King Thorin Oakenshield's side before he died. Great Parallels.

And at the start of the journey from the Shire to Rivendell, then on to Moria, Frodo is 50, Sam is 38, Merry is 36 and Pippin is not yet of age, being a mere 28 years old [hobbits come of age at 33]
so in human years pippin would’ve been 15?
@@deema7238yes. Which adds such a tragic layer to his story. He is a child thrown into war and forced to grow up too soon.
One of my favorite parts of the Lord of the Rings story is how Merry and Pippin take charge when they return to the Shire and rout the ruffians.
Every character has such a unique role.
It's just amazing how Tolkien had it all organized in his head.
Great video!
Hobbits are just the coolest! Great men, says I.
Yo Nerd your last couple videos been getting me all misty towards the end. I love the care you've taken in showing how the lives of these great characters came to a close.
These guys where the best part about lord of the rings
For 18 & 1/2 minutes, I was in another world while listening to this.
Glad I could help transport you to Middle-earth!
A lovely tale. Elrond may have had his misgivings but Merry and Pippin more than proved their worthiness to have been part of the Fellowship.
I agree, it’s nice to see artists sharing their own visualizations of characters and scenes.
9:53 Oh man Tolkien's sense of humor was fire sometimes
Seriously
I would read 1000 pages of Merry and Pippin just living their lives.
Two of my favorite characters. Right up there with Frodo and Bilbo and Sam.
I love their story so much!
Always leave a huge lump in my throat re-visiting their growth and their journey and ultimately their final resting place among kings of old. Loved every second of this vid as always! Waiting for the next notif bell to go off :)
I'm sure Billy is a nice guy, but Dom is an absolute legend. Cant wait to see this interview 💜
this man is someone my children will hear about one day, bless you bro
The ending of this video has me tearing up, I never knew any of that. It was so... innocent.
I didn’t read the books until after I saw theatrical Fellowship of the Rings. Even though the movies differ from the books, in both cases, Merry and Pippin were my favorite characters. Not only had they the best stories IMO they were also the most relatable
Yay , finally I know extremely little about the origins of the 4 hobbits , I wanted a video on this 2 for a long time , can't wait for the interview of Billy Boyd and Dominic Monagahn , can we have a video abourt samwise gamgee please?
Keep it up nerd !
I Loved the Lord of the Rings movies, but I had never delved into the books before. So sorry for my ignorance to the stories of the books, I had never realized that the stories were so eye-opening, thought-provoking and just plain mind blowing! Thank you so much for the backstories and conclusions of some loved characters... and some of the unloved characters just the same. I'm thrilled that I've only been able to find out about the story's legacy through seeing you're channel. Though I may struggle to keep up with the names, the stories are completely intriguing and utterly fascinating!😊🙂
I can't wait for that interview...Billy and Dom and hoots, and it shows in everywhere and Especially the Movies!!!
Another fantastic work from my favorite LORT channel! Thank you so much for your effort. I find Farmer Maggot quite intriguing... Maybe you can do a video someday about these secondary characters...
I was wondering about Merry and Pippins travel. Thank you!
My friend the way you described the laying to rest aside aragon brought tears to my eyes
Tolkien never fails to disappoint me..this is just beautiful.
?huh?
What a great re-telling! No matter how many times this story is told it is still tear-jerking. This surely was Tolkien's intention, the theory of the "Eucatastrophe" carried through many times in the framework of the larger tale
I love this! Thank you! The style and music are wonderful.
Just found your channel, my eyes are Gunnar turn square! Can't stop watching mate! Respect from down under 🇦🇺
Aw man if only they had included Pippin's slaying of the orc troll in the film adaptation, that would have been epic and showed a more fiercer heroic side of Pippin!
I agree they did lean into the comical a bit too much, but he was never "bumbling."
And Tolkien ALSO used Pippin for comic relief. Pippin grew as a character in both mediums. I though the biggest mistake in the movie regarding the Hobbits (well, aside from skipping my favorite chapter, the Scouring of the Shire), was shoving Merry into the Battle of the Black Gate and stealing Pippin's thunder. He should have still been recovering, and he didn't really need another hero moment like Pippin deserved.
it's crazy that the ending of this video gave me goose bumps
One can hope that they find such reliable and willing friends in their lives as Marry and Pippin!
I really love these stories. Listening to them at work picks me up
Very interesting and as I first entered Tolkien universe via other media than the books you given me more perspective on these characters as well as everything in your excellent videos.
Man the ending of merry and pippins story is such a good one.
I would love a video like this on Samwise! My personal favorite out of all the characters in the Tolkien universe. Such a badass dude.
Wow, this was one of the best stories you have made a video of. I never read the books, so I never found out of this until now, thanks!
We always appreciate your time and hard work to make these videos. Brilliant video. Your huge fan from Sri Lanka 🇱🇰🤝🏴.
Covered more ground than usual Tolkien lore powerful 💪
This is a channel I’ve needed! I just watched lotr like a week ago and finished. I’m already a big nerd, in fact my friends have to shut me up before the teachers catch me babbling off about it! I just wish there was ppl my age who liked it!
I lost it. I love how they got to live their lives. So happy.
Your choice of music and clean audio take these to another level.
YESSSS. This is the one I've been hoping for. 🙏
Gosh, their Story is so GOOD!!!! You did so well with this video NERD OF THE RINGS! I love it!
Thank, I love the Hobbits especially Merry and Pippin, my cats are (my mini house Panther) is named Pippin Sirius, and my rescue Siamese cat is Periwinkle Meriadoc Brandybuck!
My favourite hobbit duo
Thanks Matt, I enjoyed every minute of this video.
Why do I always cry with this videos?
Gosh, this channel is amazing in so many ways
It's interesting to me that Gandalf has so little patience for Pippin. I would assume that Pippin is almost a pure embodiment of the gentle mischief and curiosity which draws Gandalf to the Shire and the Baggins in the first place!
Sometimes the aspects that upset you most in other people are the ones that most remind you of yourself or your own flaws.
Gandalf was jealous that Pippin always had the best pipeweed
Watching these two in Fellowship, I kept imagining I’m Gonna Be by the Proclaimers playing in the background.
I love your Gandalf-voice!
Thanks! :)
I always get Merry and Pippin mixed up when I read the Lord of the Rings. This video helps me to differentiate between the two. Thank you!
Hobbits are such hardy people, nothing like what they seem to be like, judging just by how they live their free and easy lives ♥️
Why did that make me cry? Why does this work of fiction feel more real then anything else.
Your videos are always the perfect length with great info. I thank you for truly introducing me to the Tolkien world.
I haven't seen it on your channel yet if I missed it I'm mistaken but would love to see one of these videos for Lord Elrond! Love the work keep it up!
When Merry speaks to King Theoden before his death. It's a great reflection of when Bilbo was at King Thorin Oakenshield's side before he died. Great Parallels.
Just gives you chills at the end
Ngl, Beregond's friendship with Pippen always got me.
Hey man, just wanted to say congrats on your channel and it’s growth. Hope you and your family are happy, healthy and thriving.
god i love those characters. amazing video, the effort you put into them really shows. looking forward to your interview!
I asked for this too! Thank you! Can't wait for the interview!
No need to wait! It's up now: ua-cam.com/video/mUAQwVJHDwA/v-deo.html
@@NerdoftheRings I need to finish this first. I'll get there soon!
So we'll done! Thoroughly enjoyed this!
i almost cried hearing about their resting places
