Are people actually 'outraged' by an England kit? | LBC debate

- As both Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak weigh in on a row concerning the colour of the St George's cross on England's new football team kit, James O'Brien speaks to callers to find out if people are genuinely 'furious.'
The cross has received what Nike calls a 'playful update', with its typical colour of red replaced with a combination of red, navy, turquoise and purple.
Sunak says he 'prefers the original' and that the St George's cross should 'not be messed with', while Starmer told The Sun: 'The flag is used by everybody, it is a unifier, it doesn't need to be changed.'
'We just need to be proud of it,' he added. 'So I think they should just reconsider this and change it back.'
00:00 - James gives his take on the new design.
04:37 - Caller Chris - 'The cross should be left alone.'
06:33 - Caller Claire - 'Countries are represented by their flag.'

Imagine if people cared this much about something that actually mattered.
Identity politics being injected into everything that exists does matter to a lot of people, but what matters to a person is entirely subjective. But that is lost on people who actually mean "You should only care about the things I care about" when they say something like "Imagine if people cared this much about something that actually mattered."
It's the national flag.
The real outrage is Nike charging £125 for a football shirt made by £1 an hour workers in Thailand.
How does the FA even allow that to be?
I assume they're getting a cut, or a one off bribe.
FA does everything to increase money, not out of any morals or reason.

It is. The sentiment is the same though, isn't it?
The England flag is actually the Genova flag of San Giorgio. The 3 lions are French, inherited after an allegiance. Jingoism is always misplaced. Fight for real principles and beliefs, not this garbage.
Yeah the English pinch everything, they even steal our rain water,

@@UnjustVerdict ??
JAMES, JAMES, JAMES, your completely missing the point, what a silly man 😂
Horrible man that james so far left it's untrue
The fact that the Prime Minister AND the leader of the opposition felt the need to chime in and criticise the alternate colours on a shirt AND it made national news, really concerns me.
I also feel like if there is any level of outrage, it's likely coming from the same people who complain about people being 'too sensitive'.
And the amount of people online who do comment about it seem to love to make their own conclusions about what it means, ignoring what Nike said it represents because apparently that's a front for something.
If you are seeing just a “bit of purple” you are being “a bit blind”, on purpose think. The trans colours are pink and blue (usually a baby pink), but that purple against a dark blue/navy background looks more pink and it’s right next to a medium blue. The POC brown which was not too long ago added to the rainbow flag is also visible (as the darkest stripe on the coral, red, brown vertical section of the cross). St George’s cross is a symbol of England and a symbol of Christianity in England (St George is a Christian saint). What I see is a mockery of English people and a mockery of its Christian heritage by twisting the St George’s Cross and supplanting it with woke (Rainbow) symbolism.
Stop the world! I want to get off. This is insane🥵
The very reason JOB is even talking about this is because he knows it's an utter outrage. You can see it through his furrowed brow.
If cultural identity is weakened by a small colour change to something then surely there is a problem with the cultural identity that is much bigger than the thing under discussion.
Non sequitur. Ask yourself (and be honest here) do you think Nike would have done the same thing to an African flag or the Palestinian one? Do you think they'd meekly accept it as nothing to worry about?

@@ChrisSmith-mu1we When he was around England didn't technically exist, we were just a far flung part of the Roman Empire.
Can you explain what ‘Englishness’ is exactly. As for George turning in his grave, how so? He was most likely Greek and predates what became known as England by centuries. The red cross may be seen as a national symbol for England, but it is not unique, was borrowed from other states and was originally nothing more than an identifier.

What got me was them getting Sunak to comment on it :D What does it matter what the PM thinks, are they saying that he should pass a law on it? (He can't, he's too busy virtue-signalling about Rwanda).
Sunak'll just pass a law saying people can't see the colour blue, just red and white.
Imagine the fury when they realise that if you mix red and white you get Woke PINK!
Sunak could pass a law stating that the purple flag is in fact white and red, then its true.
I am not outraged. However, if I was presented with the shirt without any prior knowledge I would not have realised that this was supposed to be the flag of St George. It's not really a major problem to dedicate news time to. At the same time it is the national team shirt representing England and you would expect the flag to be featured somewhere?. I am not the target audience here but the price seems absolutely ridiculous.
The England flag is never usually featured prominently on an England football kit, never has been. It isn't iirc on the English Rugby kit or Cricket kits either, the former using a rose and the later using the 3 lions that the English football kit always has, so no I wouldn't really expect the flag to be featured anywhere as it never traditionally has. Also the England flag or the 'St Georges cross', has no blue on it at all, yet blue is commonly featured on the England main kit, even though red is the colour of the cross, so the England football generally has very little to do with that flag so the outrage is not only dumb, it's ignorant of the history of the England football team and it's kits.
@@tajj7 Yeah I can't remember the England kit having the flag on it very often. I think it sometimes has a cross on the left chest under the three lions? But I definitely associate the Three Lions much more with the England Football team than the cross...
Why? The England shirt very rarely has in the past, it has always used the three lions. Check out the 1966 shirt no Turkish cross anywhere near it.
If you were told it was the England kit or even if you were not and saw the three lions, surely you would make the connection.
Ahhhm . . . What new England kit? Wouldn't even know it had changed without all this noise let alone 'furious' - would be more furious about paying £120 quid for a footie shirt! ;)

In the UK, a company could potentially sue an individual for encouraging others to boycott its products if they believe it leads to financial harm or damages their reputation. However, it would depend on various factors such as the specific circumstances, the nature of the statements made, and applicable laws regarding free speech and competition.
If the boycott was based on a politically moral stance and the individual was exercising their right to free speech, it might provide them with some legal protections. However, companies may still pursue legal action if they believe the boycott is causing them significant financial harm or if they can argue that the individual's actions constitute defamation, incitement to breach of contract, or other legal grounds. Ultimately, the outcome would depend on the specific details of the case and how the courts interpret the law in relation to the circumstances.
