Imagine the John wick franchise but He only does a takedown every hour of screen time... Does he do brutal stuff? yeah But compare that to level of action and choreography that actually goes into the John Wick franchise and all of a sudden the previous image of John is a joke in comparison... When we have a character that is capable of so much and you have the perfect source material why choose to water it down... Since when was less entertainment a good thing?
@@xproflipscarab Because Joel isn't John Wick and he never was. He was an old man surviving the apocalypse. Your post is just plain ignorant to what the point of the game and the show was. It wasn't about cool violent action scenes like John Wick, it was about the humanity of these specific characters. Having an extended action scene every episode would make the violence meaningless, which is literally the opposite of the point of the show. The violence matters because it's not happening all the time.
@@OdeOneEleven I'm well aware Joel isn't John wick it was a comparison of 2 characters being the same but 1 in shown in a more entertaining light Like it or not TLOU is 1 part character driven story and 1 part Action horror... No the story isn't about violence but it's still another big reason TLOU is entertaining and keeps you on the edge of your seat... It's brutal, gritty and everything is very grounded into its environment unlike most action of its time And no one is asking for non stop action just like the game never gives you non stop action, have the characters actually have to fight out of areas.... Have Ellie forced to step up and cover for their joint survival...have the apocalypse around them actually challenge them in some way... We should see what makes Joel so revered and successful at smuggling and see what Ellie is capable of in this world I could go on and on...
@@xproflipscarab You can't have it both ways. In the episodes we have so far, Joel has an on screen body count of 10 people (not counting all the cordyceps in the history museum and the ones he sniped in episode 5). If its going to be a realistic world that's "gritty and realistic", a 56 year old man isn't going to be mowing down 6,7,8 people every other episode. Not to mention that in order to make the story in the last episode as impact full as possible (which is the point) he can't be going on a killing spree every other episode before the finale. It won't hit as hard if we already saw it earlier. And you're still missing the point comparing John Wick to Joel. It's a ridiculous comparison. One is a trained assassin in an action movie and one is a 56 year old apocalypse survivor in a television drama. Comparing their respective action scenes to each other doesnt work. Compare it to something that actually makes sense. You're comparing James Bond to Rick Grimes and it's a stupid comparison.

He was never soft. He was human for a brief moment His humanity is slowly beginning to morph into something else altogether as Old Joel starts coming out
I can totally see and understand the compare and contrast between the Commune place and the Cult place but I do think it's pertinent to point out that the Commune had a much better environment by which they could flourish while the Cult were in an environment that wasn't nearly as fertile and resource rich, so them resorting to cannibalism as a last resort is understandable. If the game wasn't scarce and they could actually grow food, the Cult wouldn't have to resort to cannibalism to survive. The main practical difference between those 2 communities is Location, Location, Location.
I hadn't played the game, so I didn't know what was coming. One thing I loved with the show was the subtle hints. The big one that "bothered" me was that you saw David and James starting to bring back the buck that Ellie had to abandon to get out of Dodge. Next you see the meat bring brought into the kitchen and them saying it was venison. And _then_ you see David come into the lodge with the buck, and the buck didn't look cut up. For a moment I was wondering if the scenes were out of order. Then later on the cannibalism was laid out. Then I realized what the earlier meat was and the reason the ordering of the scenes worked. Then I realized who the earlier meat was and felt much more disturbed. Damn. The fact the show didn't explain everything out but subtly made it look like there was a continuity error when in fact it was a plot point, and then _didn't_ explain it explicitly... that's good writing.
Basically the show is Joel playing on Perfect mode, so that he doesn't have to be as violent as he's been in the game. But due to his consequences of the show, he now has to show us that yes, he is still that Joel from the games.
I have to disagree on the Joel point. We’ve had successful complicated characters that border on unlikable but the writing is so strong the character is understandable and loved by audiences. Violence didn’t need to be a turning point because him going hard 4 Ellie is the emotional turning point. Plus as a turning point, violence makes little sense because we know he’s been this violent if not worse before due to Tommy’s reaction and feeling towards him. Did it work for some people, including u guys sure. But it doesn’t mean it couldn’t have been just as successful in a different way. Personally as a game player I prefer troys take on this scene but felt it was good enough. But I certainly didn’t feel impacted by his violence. I was like “yeah of course we need this scene here”. Bella Ramsay on the other hand did leave an impact on me and delivered a performance on par with Ashley Johnson and I was incredibly impressed and pleased. But hey we all agree that at the very least the show is good. How good is subjective
I’m surprised Troy Baker wasn’t a bigger screen star. He has the talent, the looks and the build. I always wonder if people who do voice acting are usually failed actors but maybe I’m being naive 🤷♂️
That’s a great question because Troy definitely has the chops. That said, he is incredibly successful as a voice actor so it could be a personal choice.
For an actor to pull off Legendary performances in a booth or in a warehouse covered in tights and dots on an empty set that rival some of the Hollywood greats Make them some of the best actors in the industry no where near "Failed Actors"... Most of the time they probably just like to stay in their lane or simply just don't have the right connections
Dunno what it is with people and needles. I was never bothered by them or really anything for that matter - I watched a doctor remove an ingrown toe nail of mine (blood/puss, etc.) even though they told me to look away lol. I remember getting the COVID shot and the nurse was like, "You can look away, we don't want you to faint." And I was like, "Oh I'm fine." She was like, "Umm okay...." And when she was done she was like, "Wow, wish everyone was like you." LOL. Maybe I was a surgeon in a former life.
Another Episode deserving of a rewatch. Grant Bella Ramsey her flowers for such an incredible performance. Furtherance of prosperity in her acting career. The seductiveness of the David character, the scene where the group all eat at the steakhouse, heads down, the ever increasing volume of the eating utensils contacting the plate, etc. Eerie scene.
Actually it was worse in the game.. not only was it implied David wanted to kick it with Ellie.. It was implied she wasn't the first one when the guy Joel tortures says Ellie is David's NEWEST pet... I loved the show but I still feel the game did it better... especially the important scenes... Bill's ending.. Henry killing Sam and himself.. Ellie telling Joel everybody she trusted is dead or gone... Tess dying... etc etc
I really wish they had infected in this episode. Fighting along side David and him having multiple opportunities to kill Ellie but doesn't to gain her/your trust, really makes David's proposal and attempted assault a lot worse.
Yes, I found it suspicious that he was so adamant to take Ellie alive. (I'm not a game player). I'm surprised the cordyceps can survive the extreme cold. I guess I'm misremembering something said in the show.
I haven’t played the game. I’m with Oz’s wife. As soon as David popped up, I knew he was a damn creep. He made my skin crawl as soon as he opened his gob.
For those that didn't notice in the episode the girl's father who was killed wasn't killed by Joel or Ellie it was David who killed him and fed his body to his people I knew as soon as Ellie saw that body hanging in the kitchen
No, he was killed by Joel. People saw Joel kill him. Those bodies were others. If they killed them unjustifiably, self defense, or they died for other reasons is unknown.
I think I saw three legs hanging, so unless that dad was some kind of mutant, that’s their way of saying that the dad was not the first, and that this has been going on for awhile. Heck David gives himself a jumbo bowl, he’s getting a taste for it.
I'm not sure if it is fair to compare to The Walking Dead. At it's peak (early seasons), they were great episodes. And in each season, they were longer and had more episodes. It's almost like network TV had to be 1/2 hour or full hour for 22 episodes. There had to be some stinkers if they are doing that much, unlike HBO shows, which are like 10 or 9 episodes in this case. If they edited The Walking Dead to 1 season of 9 episodes, I am sure it could be a great show too. Most people complain about The Walking Dead because they just ended up milking for how many seasons -when things became repetitive and certain peoples were not dying.
Still liking the show, but I think Joel game version is just as or more dramatic. The point of him being so hard from the start is that you actually see him soften emotionally as he’s bonding with Ellie in the game. It’s about a character who’s lost their humanity and then getting it back, which then leads to something crazy which I don’t want to spoil for new fans who haven’t played the game.
Compared to the game, Joel in the show is comparatively "softer" and more tame but that makes sense because of the different mediums. In the game, you can have Joel rack up a Rambo level body count because most players tend to play the game as a murder hobo. You obviously can't do that in a live action TV show without Murder Hobo Joel coming across as a complete monster. Joel in the show being more restrained and selective with violence makes sense because you don't want to break the suspension of disbelief. Do you get what I mean?
@Ajith Thomas i get what you mean I've played the game multiple times and I guess internally i was like oh well of course show Joel can't be as violent but didn't think people would think of that as a negative
We knew Joel had that dog in him, I do think they needed to balance him out because had he been this ruthless, I don’t think the audience would’ve trusted a man that violent and dangerous with a young girl, but since we’ve seen he’s protective, loyal, and loving towards his family it’s a healthy balance. I do think it’s important to have in the back of your mind what Joel is capable of though.
I really like these episode reviews! Yeah, I agree 100% that Joel had to ramp up to the violence in the show; in the game, the point of playing is to kill lots of people. But that would not have worked in a TV show, and would not have been sustainable long-term.
I liked how until he did the sexual hand gesture you couldn’t be certain David was a psycho. Creepy sure, but potentially just a guy doing what he had to. Once they broke the seal on his craziness tho they took him straight to infinity & beyond
I wanna know who is calling Joel soft? I think most of the audience (with common sense) knows the body count of a video game is to serve having ‘game play’. Literally the only time I heard Joel called soft is this channel.
@Christopher B. Braxton the "Gamergate" douchebags were always small in number but they figured out how to amplify their "opinions" by spamming them everywhere, as often as they could. Sadly they were able to convince content creators that it was a real movement, rather than a handful of fascists.
I just want to see him scrap like he does in the game. Still my favorite brawling system of any game ever. Shove dudes into shelves and stomp em. Interrogation scenes are whatever. Yawn.
The walking dead got boring every time they settled somewhere… TLOU is always on the move …. Every zombie show makes the same mistake, they find a settlement get in and start talking about their feelings …
How dare the main dude calling Joel soft the only real person I saw do a video on it say now we are getting violent Joel. A man who has already beat a man to death, killed multiple men with gun shots, then stabbed a man to death with his own knife that is not soft. He beat a man to death with his fists
He stabbed a young dude who was crying for his Mom to death
He broke a man's neck
He stabbed a man in the neck
He tortured and killed 2 men
I swear people just have the shortest attention spans.
@@OdeOneEleven I'm well aware Joel isn't John wick it was a comparison of 2 characters being the same but 1 in shown in a more entertaining light
Like it or not TLOU is 1 part character driven story and 1 part Action horror... No the story isn't about violence but it's still another big reason TLOU is entertaining and keeps you on the edge of your seat... It's brutal, gritty and everything is very grounded into its environment unlike most action of its time
And no one is asking for non stop action just like the game never gives you non stop action, have the characters actually have to fight out of areas.... Have Ellie forced to step up and cover for their joint survival...have the apocalypse around them actually challenge them in some way...
We should see what makes Joel so revered and successful at smuggling and see what Ellie is capable of in this world
I could go on and on...
13:57 Hide your kids, hide your wife and hide your husband cuz Ellie slashing everybody out here.
You don't have to come and confess
She's looking for you she gonna find you
She gonna find you
So you can run and tell that
Run and tell that
Run and tell that
Homeboy, home home homeboy.
😂😂😂
I scrolled past this just as Korey said it
Troy Baker was not only the voice of Joel in game, he did the motion/performance capture of the character as well! We should recognize that.
She made David 70/30 ground beef blend
David def gave off Jim Jones vibes when I saw him. (Not a game player)
He was never soft. He was human for a brief moment His humanity is slowly beginning to morph into something else altogether as Old Joel starts coming out
I just realized when the girl wanted to bury her father, but David refused because the ground was too solid. Wow.
Aww dang, I thought there really was a photo of David chopped up and I looked it up XD
Damn.
The fact the show didn't explain everything out but subtly made it look like there was a continuity error when in fact it was a plot point, and then _didn't_ explain it explicitly... that's good writing.
if i learned anything from Stephen King, is that never trust a person of faith, during the apocalypse. It's always a trap.
Basically the show is Joel playing on Perfect mode, so that he doesn't have to be as violent as he's been in the game. But due to his consequences of the show, he now has to show us that yes, he is still that Joel from the games.
Joel looking like Frodo holding his sword in the thumbnail
I used to think Tommy Jarvis snapped when he hacked Jason up but Ellie definitely took the crown for berserker child! 😳
Brightburn
This episode shows why Joel is such a great character...very well done 👏
The abrupt pop up killed me😂 16:08
Actually it was worse in the game.. not only was it implied David wanted to kick it with Ellie.. Tess dying... etc etc
Literally never heard anyone actually call Joel soft. People wanting Rambo body counts are just foolish.
I don't think Joel was afraid of not being able to protect Elle. I think he was afraid of letting the beast back out.
We women knew what the deal was with this guy early on.
I never played the game but now I want to
For those that didn't notice in the episode the girl's father who was killed wasn't killed by Joel or Ellie it was David who killed him and fed his body to his people I knew as soon as Ellie saw that body hanging in the kitchen
There was witnesses to Joel doing that though. He may have fed her father to them afterwards
😂 “for those who didn’t notice” this thing I just completely made up & can’t prove.
Ellie from the TV series killed Joel from the video game.😂
No one was saying Joel was soft
That girl's daddy had it coming. On the bright side, her dad will always be with her.
Until the next bowel movement
Still liking the show, but I think Joel game version is just as or more dramatic. The point of him being so hard from the start is that you actually see him soften emotionally as he’s bonding with Ellie in the game. It’s about a character who’s lost their humanity and then getting it back, which then leads to something crazy which I don’t want to spoil for new fans who haven’t played the game.
I've literally never heard anyone refer to Joel in the show as "soft". Just you man.
I’m in a lot of last of us game groups and yes it’s been a discussion topic plenty of times when talking about the show
Lol Game Joel would break HBO Joel's knees and curb stomp his teeth out
Why do they keep calling Joel soft? I don't think I've heard anyone say that about show joel
I guess compared to the game, Joel's not as vicious in the show.
I'm not a game player but Joel comes across pretty vicious to me.
Haven’t watched the episode yet but I’m ok with spoilers.
Maybe because I never played the game but I never thought Joel was soft.
I teared up when he said Baby Girl 🥺
Anyone spot that the corpses hanging upside down in the shed in the village somehow had their arms by their sides?
Yeah they were like taped or saran wrapped down
I really like these episode reviews! Yeah, I agree 100% that Joel had to ramp up to the violence in the show; in the game, the point of playing is to kill lots of people. But that would not have worked in a TV show, and would not have been sustainable long-term.
I believed you had a picture of David. 😅
0:21 What kinda meat is that? Venison? :P
Joel ain't soft, he's been hardened by the experiences.
Cracker Island review when though? 🥺🙏
I thought when you said he wasn't soft anymore I thought he would kill the whole town. I wasn't waiting for that girl to be named Abbey.
I liked how until he did the sexual hand gesture you couldn’t be certain David was a psycho. Creepy sure, but potentially just a guy doing what he had to.
Once they broke the seal on his craziness tho they took him straight to infinity & beyond
Like being "schnealthy" living that "stritty greet life" :D
I like the show bur it feels rushed. I wish they had a longer season
I didn't know the leaders sidekick was the guy who voiced Joel in the game.
The voice of Ellie has also been in the show
They didnt crack a code the game was made so great you can use it line for line shot for shot from the game and it holds up
Ground beef for the surviving civilians!
Pedro pascal was a cleaner in the show Nikita from CW
I wanna know who is calling Joel soft? I think most of the audience (with common sense) knows the body count of a video game is to serve having ‘game play’. Literally the only time I heard Joel called soft is this channel.
@Christopher B. Braxton the "Gamergate" douchebags were always small in number but they figured out how to amplify their "opinions" by spamming them everywhere, as often as they could. Sadly they were able to convince content creators that it was a real movement, rather than a handful of fascists.
They went EVERY award... Emmy, osbar,. whatever that British thing is...
14:49 I didn't know that. Da-yam. She bad.
Troy baker getting killed by ellie is so crazy
Joel was never soft though
He was never soft lmao
I just want to see him scrap like he does in the game. Still my favorite brawling system of any game ever. Shove dudes into shelves and stomp em. Interrogation scenes are whatever. Yawn.
All i gotta say is them anti-biotics kicked in fast asf lol
Remember she led an army and killed a giant in GOT
Stuck that blade in his eye as she was getting crushed in his hand.
Hey korey
I run a channel for lost spill media
(If you couldn’t tell by the name)
I was wondering if you had any reviews that may be considered lost
Can't wait for the iconic line in the next episode: "Thank God... you're the last of us."
Don't forget that crucial moment where a character called Abby turns up, Screams its morbin' time and "does the deed"
The walking dead got boring every time they settled somewhere… TLOU is always on the move …. Every zombie show makes the same mistake, they find a settlement get in and start talking about their feelings …
I feel like David should be Paul WS. Anderson for making those Resident Evil movies. Like this show just turned Resident Evil into hamburger..
How dare the main dude calling Joel soft the only real person I saw do a video on it say now we are getting violent Joel. A man who has already beat a man to death, killed multiple men with gun shots, then stabbed a man to death with his own knife that is not soft. Talking about "I knew we were gonna git it." no he didn't, does he forget we can rewatch his videos? Leave the "Dad Grass" alone my brotha. Lol
9:05 Pedro & Bella aren't selling the scenes from the game.
That wasn't david..that was venison
Do People under the stairs movie review
Joel was like. I never went soft. The rest of you are cry babies.😂
