Before I watch this video. I'll explain my two ways of getting out of a funk.
Number 1: You play a time-consuming video game that you hate with your friends for a month. You start liking it but by week two it's requiring way too much time to maintain your shit in the game and your friends are like weird or something. So you get stressed out a lot and they don't really want to stop playing the game. Then after a brutal defeat, you say "Fuck it. I'm going back to my stuff" Then you return to your stuff super motivated and excited. You'll also be glad you stepped away from whatever you were doing because now you see things differently that you wouldn't have if hadn't stopped for a month.
Number 2: You organize yourself, Don't hate yourself, be patient with yourself, review what you have done and what you need to keep doing, write it down and make a daily commitment. Schedule yourself and simply commit to the schedule. If you can't think. Focus your attention on something else you want to do but don't stop trying to figure out the first thing. Don't let yourself do nothing or destroy your schedule because you feel stuck on one thing. Focus on something else that you can make progress on. Simply put it you need to build up momentum. If you're stuck on something examine why your stuck, try something else your not so stuck on and you will build up momentum. So basically rescheduling, rethinking, lots of trying and real effort but never be hard on yourself. Don't say you failed to say you got a step closer to understanding what you need to do. You can always learn something from whatever you.
I hope I explained that well. Number 1 takes about a month+ and number two or three weeks longest. Anyway, that's what I've been doing anyway. Let's see what Cam says.

In a nutshell, physiology (body), focus (mind), and meaning. Three simple points to keep in mind. I wouldn't say this completely pulled me out of my funk, but it's helped a lot. Thanks for this.

+SociallyWired Congrats on quitting! That's awesome. The funk after you quit is normal and it will go away over time. Check out the video on being bored, it will help explain why you're feeling in a funk after you quit.

Hey man, just started watching your videos and this one has hit home. I feel like I've been in a funk for the last almost two years. Your advice is great, and I'm looking forward to following it and creating the life that I want to have. I just joined your email list, too. Keep up the good work man!

Game Quitters Actually I wouldn't mind some insight into how you started your business and all that. I dream of being able to travel, work for myself, and meet interesting people like you do. Video games have taken more of my time than I care to admit, and I'm ready to cast them aside to actually LIVE my life.

I had a business before called Kingpin Social that taught dating and social skills. We had the business for 5 years and I worked with over 500 guys 1 on 1, so that's where it came from. I just started the business and figured it out. Didn't need any money at the start cause we had no overhead, so it was all profit, and I just focused on finding clients. Most people overcomplicate things. We didn't have any idea what to do so we just kept it really simple, basically writing down every name of someone (from our phone contacts and FB) we could potentially offer our services to then we would meet with them for coffee and talk about whether they were interested or not. Most said no but we learned from that. Then overtime we made a few sales and that grew over time. At first we didn't have a website, or a company name, or business cards, or anything. None of that matters for sales honestly. Just talking to customers.
I do help people with this sort of thing in our mastermind group, if you're interested go here: gamequitters.com/beyond

A Tony Robbins conference!? You just added a new, enlightening visual dimension to an event which I had previously only read about in Susan Cain's 'Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking'. That place was crazy-- I wouldn't last two minutes. Did you enjoy it?

I forgot where I heard this but whenever I get into a funk I imagine myself sitting at a round table with all the people I look up to and are inspired by. Then I imagine what we would be talking about or something like that. You ever try using that?

I am glad to be out of a non-upload, "can't possibly take youtube responsibly" funk. I understand now that UA-cam has been a stress relief tool I use every day when I come home from work. I got too hard on myself for watching too much youtube, but I believe in the power of this website so much that I am willing to upload videos again.
Furthermore, I am happy to be rebooting with a new social platform geared towards aiding and assisting the game quitters network of x-gamers. I can't wait to upload video topics in a similar format to Game Quitters.
I can't wait until you come to San Jose, and we will surely enjoy a Sharks game together. Tickets go on sale soon, and I will keep in touch and be sure to give you the specifics.

Hi Cam, I need your advice on how to get my son to even watch your videos. If I even mention quitting games he completely shuts me down. He is a bright kid who is just starting high school and he loves video games because in part because it's something he is good at. What is your suggestion to help him WANT to learn to be good at something else. He tells me that he's not interested in anything but video games. Help!

    • @GameQuitters
      @GameQuitters  9 років тому

Lisa Betchey Hi Lisa! Thanks for reaching out. What you're experiencing is normal and it speaks to how gaming is something he feels safe with (it's an outlet "away" from the world.) So when you bring it up he instantly becomes defensive. This isn't ideal but it gives us clues to how to approach it. I have a few articles I've written for addiction.com (for parents) that will offer some help: www.addiction.com/author/cam-adair/
Most importantly any conversations you are going to have with him about gaming should happen outside of the house and avoid using any language that makes him feel like a "gaming addict." That will only cause more harm. Instead you want to focus on maintaining a good relationship built on trust and as he opens up a bit you can work together to come up with agreements (make sure he's involved in them and they aren't only coming from you, otherwise he won't feel ownership to stay true to them.)
The reason he doesn't enjoy other activities is because of the following combination:
      1) How your brain enjoys gaming - you can watch my video on why you find other activities to be boring for more on that.
      2) The needs gaming fulfills - so by learning more about *why* he plays and what he specifically enjoys about them you will get a lot of clues into what other activities he may enjoy.
It's a tough position to be in and I definitely empathize with you. There aren't easy answers when they *do not* want to quit, but maintaining a good relationship while holding true to your boundaries is important. For more on "interventions" I'd recommend reading the second last chapter of "In The Realm of Hungry Ghosts" by Gabor Maté. You should be able to find that in bookstores around Denver and read through that chapter quickly.

Haha. I dont know if I will ever read your reply I dont know how to check. But I knew you were atleast using some of Tony's stuff in your other videos.
I am 29 and my life is in shambles. I am just so far behind. I had to quit drinking and using drugs but I think my life is worse than ever and all I am doing besides living and eating unhealthy is playing League of Legends. I can not escape the compulsion.
I believe I read your article on Kingpin lifestyle many moons ago. I dropped out of 7th grade to play Starcraft lol. Now I just deliver pizza and suffer

+jokes Hopefully you get an email with my reply! Thanks for watching. I know in the moment it can be tough when things aren't good. Having been through periods of depression throughout my life I definitely relate to this. Keep working baby steps and over time they will compound into bigger changes. Check out The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg. It might help.

Obviously someone with money will beat addiction more easily. IE: Someone taking lavish vacations versus the person living i poverty and using a cheap laptp and LOL to escape reality.
The low-end drunk vs the stealing pharmacist..
