Can the Chroma Console Beat the Gen Loss...AND the MOOD...AT THE SAME TIME????

  • As I started diving into the ‪@HologramElectronics‬ Chroma Console, I began to unlock so many wonderful sounds in the various modules. Many of these modules reminded me of other pedals. ‪@strymon‬ DECO, mtl.asm Count to 5, and of course, the ‪@ChaseBlissAudio‬ MOOD Mkii and Generation Loss Mkii (Probably some Lossy in there too!)
    So naturally I decided to see if I could match the sounds from the Chroma to the MOOD and Gen Loss. This one is approached a bit differently than my normal comparison videos. Normally, when I'm comparing a pedal, to let's say, the ‪@MerisUs‬ LVX or Mercury X, I'm tweaking the Meris pedals to emulate the other pedal. More simply, can pedal A be adjusted to sound like pedal B. This one is the other way around. Can pedal B be adjusted to sound like pedal A. (Pedal B in this case are the Chase Bliss and Pedal A the Chroma.) The reason for this is that while the Chroma Console is jam packed with so many different sounds, the ability to adjust each of the algorithms is very limited. This isn't a bad thing, just a thing. So in this case, I dialed in the desired settings on the Chroma Console that reminded me of the MOOD and Gen Loss, and then adjusted the MOOD and Gen Loss to match the sounds from the Chroma. A little backwards approach to the same thing.
    Check it out and let me know what you think!

    my chroma is on the way. can't wait! thinking about how it can get close enough on these pedals, but also that you can easily flip the order with a couple button taps. honestly this thing seems so impressive! great video!

      What’s funny is the VO track on this was horrible, really quiet with a lot of noise. It was soooo bad that I almost scrapped the whole video. Then I bounced that to a producer friend and asked them to help clean it up. I’ll have to find out what they did and make that standard.
      Thanks for watching and commenting 🙏

    It's amazing how powerful and versatile the Chroma Console is, while also having an incredibly simple and efficient user interface and controls. I've never pulled the trigger on a chase bliss pedal because I personally find their UI design to be overly complicated and not super intuitive. I can't wait for my chroma console to arrive, I have a feeling it will end up replacing a number of pedals on my board

      I find the Chroma to be incredibly easy to use! My only complaint is that there is no visible feedback to where the settings are in presets (or secondary controls in general). To be fair this is a complain of many companies, Chase Bliss included. Walrus does a great job at this in that when you move a knob, the LED changes color to purple until you move the knob to the saved location, then the color goes to the preset color. It would really be helpful on the Chroma.
      That said, the Chroma is still very VERY easy and enjoyable to use!
      As for the Chase Bliss pedals having an overly complicated UI, I think it’s because they tend to be complex and need all those knobs and switches to accomplish all the things they can do.
      I think if you look at the Chase Bliss pedals with 2 “channels” like the Dark World or Mood to start, then it’s a little easier to wrap your head around. (Yes the Mood can be wildly complex, but hear me out!) Ignore the DIP switches, then you just have 6 knobs. 2 each for each side and 2 masters. Then the 3 switches become again, 1 for each side and 1 master.
      The Dark World being their dual reverb, and it can become very very simple. Then as you become comfortable you add in more complexity with the DIP switches.
      The single effect pedals like the Habit or Thermae can get very very complex for such a little box 🤣

    My fav pedal channel, because you do videos on what we are thinking. Im a hip-hop producer and I want that old school sound. So I was looking at pedals that bring that tape sound like when audio made it onto analog tape machines and or on vinyl. (The music sounded amazing) So this is what I want to do with my hip hop track, sucks those tape machines from back then cost a lost of money now. Im using my roland keyboard with my MPC Live to create thru my pedals, one day ill get that retro sound.

      @@thepedalcollaborative Yea, I do my research daily on outboard gear, so I will find my way. So currently I took my music down from streaming platforms earlier this year. I was rebuilding my core fundamentals on music production. I came to understand my sound was lacking due to my equipment I was using. Meaning the converters were not strong converters so my sound was flat. Pretty much like the millions of people making music today. So I went out and did my research and started to learn more about stereo. Understand which sound work better in stereo and which sounds work better in mono in the same sound composition. Then I learned about bit rates and how the devices back in the 70's-90's were made. How to get that analog warm punch and a full body track. So yeah I started over with my sounds and have yet to release my new stuff. But when i do, Ill let you hear lol. Here is a pedal I was looking at..... Really helpful video! I have always enjoyed the mindset of using discrete pedals, one pedal per effect, and trying to get pedals that each do their one job very well... But the chroma console has me shaking my head. Having that capability to reorder the effects basically eliminates the only reasonable objection I could come up with. 20 usable effects in any order. True that you can only choose one from each bank at a time but... Then when you add in the idea of lfo movement recording its just... 🤔 Wow. Hard to beat. Especially in the category of lofi pedals and value in its price range - if you tried to recreate what it does in that price range with separate pedals it would be impossible. One observation though it does feel/seem like the chroma console tends to come out sounding similar/consistent across a lot or videos which makes me wonder does it have a narrow range of useful sounds, or are all of the useful sounds very similar? But then i remind myself that taste is subjective and every artist will find their own way. I wouldnt want to pick this up and end up sounding like everyone else but then... There is zero chance of that anyway 😂 great video!

    • @thepedalcollaborative

    • @thepedalcollaborative
      @thepedalcollaborative  3 місяці тому +1

      @PorchBass the Chroma has true bypass available, so when it’s disengaged there is no coloration to your tone. By the nature of an effect, it changes your tone when on in whatever manner you have it set.
      One cool thing about the Chroma is it can automatically adjust the input gain to match your instrument. Most pedals give you instrument or line level. This one can do it in a smart way. You hold down both footswitches until all the lights turn purple, then play your instrument. It reads the signal coming in and adjusts the gain accordingly!

    Can it do the microcosm?

    • @thepedalcollaborative
      @thepedalcollaborative  3 місяці тому +4

      In my experience the Chroma and Microcosm work better together than as replacements for each other. I was initially hoping the Chroma would replace the Microcosm but for what I do it can’t. I use the Microcosm as midi clock out. I also am mainly using Mosaic1 in reverse on the Microcosm with some ambient reverb and modulation in the secondaries. I haven’t been able to dial that into the Chroma.
      The other algorithms in the Microcosm I am less familiar with tbh but again, I would be hard pressed to think the Chroma can cover them.
      I would suspect it’s intentional so that the Chroma doesn’t cannibalize on the Microcosm.

      Unrelated question- can you recommend an ear training course for subtlety in effects? I noticed I have a hard time focusing on parameters that are adjustable, like eq in a reverb, or dithering shapes, the minutia that can be tweaked and leave an impression. You seem like someone who could make a great referral...
