Honestly the fact that starkid made people sad about the death of jar jar binks is an example of how effective they are?? Like Starkid’s writing is genuinely so good.
oh wow! I see what Starkid did there. ANI. like the musical Annie. But instead it's Ani, a nickname for "Anakin". A humorous play on words. That's where the comedy comes in.
My favorite visual joke in this is the giant adult onesie as Ani's costume. Also, it is my belief that they wanted the band singing over the play, as though to parody a cheesy 80's style movie. A lot of this play is parodying that kind of cheesiness, such as the underdog sports team cliche, etc. I think it's brilliant humor.
Also, I had no idea that people are saying that this is Starkid's worst work. Are you kidding me?? This is comedy GOLD. I don't even know dick about Star Wars and I can tell when I am looking at STELLAR writing, impeccable acting and stage directing, amazing music, and just plain talent and heart. This is probably their BEST work. This is not just amateur comedy- they know what they are doing and they did a wonderful job. I don't know who is looking at this over 2 years after this came out on UA-cam, but seriously people, give this play a chance. Starkid, keep up the good work and I hope everything you do in the future is as enjoyable as this.
I agree that this is definitely a great production. On first viewing I didn't give it a shot, I was so used to AVPM, and backed out after a few minutes. Coming back to it later, especially after watching their other musicals, I can really appreciate the writing, music (MY GOD THE MUSIC), and just everything. It's one of my faves and I love how the songs could easily be in any 80s movie even with all of the Star Wars themes in them. Part of me feels like they made this just as an excuse to perform their Star Wars fan songs haha.
Actually, Nick said in a livestream that the original intent was for it to be like a sports channel montage! I totally see where you are coming from though!
ughh yeah i will never understand how anyone could say this is their worst… i understand if it isn’t someone’s favorite but i’ve seen real hate for this show over the years that i will never get. it’s forever one of my favorites
The audience's reaction to the "nobody's too old for lego bricks" comment is just more proof of the level of nerdiness we starkid fans live by. And I just love it!
idk why the Starkid fandom hates this. It's one of the funniest things these people have made. Combining the Star Wars prequels with various 80s movies... And they managed to put montages in a freaking play
I sort of classify StarKid shows in different catagories: like, there's the Harry Potter ones, then there's Ani, Starship, HMBM, and MaMD, then there's Trail to Oregon and Firebringer, then there's Twisted and TGWDLM, (that probably sounds so weird, but Idk, that's just how I work) but anyway, I cant really have a favorite cause they're all sO different, but what I was TRYING to say before I got SO off track is that Ani is underrated and I love it
most of the complaints i’ve seen about this show is that the writing is iffy and that they’re not star wars fans, so it really just wasn’t their cup of tea. no one hates it, they just like the other shows better. it’s really tricky making parodies because you’re already excluding a ton of people who haven’t seen the thing they’re parodying. they managed to pull it off with harry potter somehow, but i’m not one to question the reason we have starkid
I think it's generally less liked because of the incredibly minimalist design of the whole show (costumes, music, pacing, decor), as well as the cast's composition which lacks starkid front faces such as Lauren Lopez, Joey Richter or Jaime Beatty who do contribute to the popularity factor of the shows they're in. Finally, having the show be based around an anti-hero like Ani (portrayed as lazy, macho, and obese) definitely makes some fans more reluctant to watch it. It's still a good show, it's STARKID! But it doesn't have the qualities that make the team's other shows so popular to the fanbase.
none of the songs contribute to the plot or character development. they either lampoon the original source (ie the song composed of "romantic" anikin quotes) or can all be summed up as "you can do it! people said you couldn't do it, but you can do it! wow, look at you, you're doing it!" i mean, if you like that sort of genre of 80s-synth-pump-up music, then hell yeah, this musical is chockablock full of it. but it's not my cup of tea.
"Lord Vader, I command you to return to the Death Star and just be... just be... miserable... for the rest of your life..." I see you Little Mermaid reference! Love how often the Langs slip in subtle Disney references.
@@luisagf1385 In the prequels anakin (ani) skywalker is assigned to protect princess padme amidala and instead he falls in love with her (because he sucks at his job). Basically, Haunted by the Kiss is a song which contains the word for word dialogue of the prequels. If you just think about those lyrics in the context of a serious conversation, said by a whiny teenage simp, you will burst out laughing.
The costuming in this show is fantastic and elevates the comedy so much The love interest is in such an unsexualized outfit while tarkin has that gorgeous crop top and booty shorts Ani’s freaking onesie and paddy/Obi wan in those bathrobe type thing That beautiful leia bikini that kept falling off
I actually love that they did something different and had a band sing all the songs instead of the actors. It's different and maybe people didn't like that, but they dared to try something new and I think that's wonderful.

I want to be in a Starkid show so bad. For most people it's Broadway but if I was ever in a Starkid musical I'd be like damn I made it. I love watching all their stuff. It's the best. Everyone is so talented.
+SweetnSame Agreed. I've been doing stage shows for almost six years now, but my life would be complete if I ever shared a stage with the Starkid crew.
Many people are talking about how amazing Brian or Joe Walker did but Chris Allen was amazing at Ani and probably the best role he had in Starkid. Chris Allen is very underrated and I wished he was in more Productions.
My favorite thing about Starkid parodies is that they feel like some people brought their fanfic to life or are just playing pretend like when they were kids and I honestly think that’s fucking beautiful.
I understand why some people have reacted negatively, Starkid has had a certain formula for their shows and when you make content not everyone is a fan of change. I personally loved some of the differences, I liked the band singing because it gave us hilarious dance sequences (and the starkid band in general is SO talented they have been needing some sort of spotlight) and the humor was a bit different but I still enjoyed it. They made a good choice doing these changes in Ani, in my opinion. I don't think I would have worked out as well in one of their bigger productions. Also, was Clark in both Oregon and Ani bands? Damn, claps for him.
To be fair, it was different because they put on two shows in one year. That is similar to when Pixar gave us Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur in the same year. Inside Out was given more effort and had more of the creative team that Pixar normally has. But The Good Dinosaur went through movie hell as most of the voice cast was replaced halfway through the writing suffered (though the animation certainly didn't). It's unfortunate that the film isn't very good (it isn't bad but didn't give us anything new or interesting to care much about it). While Ani: A Parody suffered from having only a part of the main cast associated with Starkid, having to split between the two productions of the year, the music was still memorable an fun, and the writing was still on par. I'm glad Ani: A Parody isn't the Good Dinosaur of Starkid productions!
barbaro267 I agree although I did prefer trail to oregon. I think having more of the popular starkids eg lauren and joey and jaime was a set back for this and also having to follow twisted was always going to be a hard job as twisted was just so phenomenal.
Not just Clark, the entire band for both shows was the same, huge props to all of them! Also, pretty sure Clark did have to memorise stuff, I don't think he has sheets in front of him.
It just occurred to me that this is probably the first time we've seen Joe Walker in the "straight man" role in a StarKid production. Not seeing him in a ridiculous costume is a bit strange, but it's definitely refreshing!
He was straight in Starship because he had a crush on Taz who was a girl. He was also straight in Holy Musical B@man because he had a part in a song when he is singing about his ex-girlfriend. :)
I think what the other person meant by "straight man" is that he was a more serious character this time, while in the other musicals he has usually played more silly roles. :)
i am so enraged by the negativity ani has gotten. this show was genuinely so beautiful and so great. and it annoys me that the fans of starkid have started to judge the value of a show based on who is in it. how fucking childish is that? starkid is not the people involved but the stories they tell. the fact that so many people are disappointed by the lack of quality in the production??? what, did you expect this to be the next avpm? did you expect that team starkid, a theatre COMPANY, would create a new series of free shows? nick and matt spend so much money as well as time on shows that don't receive any income because if they sold tickets, they would be sued for infringing copyright. and i'm pretty sure ani was a show that couldn't sell tickets. if nick and matt and anyone else had spent so much money on the set and costumes etc..., they would lose money and that is not how a company works. also, as members of starkid get older, many of them receive more jobs outside of performing in these productions. i think the fans need to realise that all members have a life outside of starkid and not all of them can find the time to perform in musicals where they most likely, aren't going to see an income of money. this brings me to albums and other merch sold by starkid. this is one of the main ways they get their income if they can't sell tickets. the problem is, it's easy to get a hold of their music without having to pay for it. again, they lose money. it frustrates me that so many fans couldn't see past the quality of the set design, the costumes, the people involved, to actually watch the story. i'm going to admit, i have never seen a star wars movie. the only way i know anything about star wars is through playing lego star wars. despite, that the jokes are easy to understand BECAUSE THEY EXPLAIN THEM. i didn't know who mara jada was but ani saying 'i'm old enough to be her father-in-law'. THEY MAKE EVERYTHING SO OBVIOUS AND EASY TO FOLLOW EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT A HUGE STAR WARS FAN. they could have just kept people who weren't star wars fans in the dark about these jokes and i'm so grateful that they explained them. the jokes were still funny. the story itself is so beautiful. when jar jar binks was attempting to commit suicide, i was on edge because i was worried they would make a joke of it. but they didn't. they handled it relatively well and the jokes in the situation were not aimed at suicide and i'm so grateful and happy that they didn't make fun of it. the conversation between the emperor and ani at the end is also so incredibly important for anyone who wants to do something their parents wouldn't be proud of. when the emperor said 'if you wanted to pod race so bad why didn't you tell me?' i was so happy because i never knew how to respond to something like that. i loved the 80's themes, the music was incredible! just because no one in the cast sang, doesn't mean this show was awful? like where the hell did you get that from? the music in ani is probably one of the best of all their performances. to think that starkid is getting worse? no they're getting so much better (and this is not to devalue past performances. i've thoroughly enjoyed every production!!). i'm so mad that the people who call themselves fans of starkid are so quick to put down a production that had so much love and effort put into it just because their favourite starkid member wasn't in it, or it 'looked crap'. starkid, to me, has never been about the quality of the costumes, or the sets, but the beauty of the stories they tell - the real life situations that they handle so brilliantly. and it also saddens me that nick and any other member who reads these shitty comments have to be brought down by them because Ani: A Parody was definitely one of the best.
Ani actually DID sell tickets as part of the Starkid Summer season. But they're not doing a DVD of it like wth some of the other shows because of copyright reasons so you've sort of got the idea. I'm also very grateful they took the high road and refrained from suicide jokes. I know that scene understandably did upset some people but I think they handled it relatively well. And I agree about the hating on how it looked or the cast. Not everyone can be in every show, and a lot of people don't realize that the cat was split for the summer (meaning the others did another show) and they had to split the budget. The people expecting another Twisted-level production quality show probably don't realize that that show was funded on Kickstarter and with Ani/Trail to Oregon they only had the normal budget plus they had to split it between shows.
That whole scene with his three groupies (Joe Brian and Nick at their finest), Eric's voice, the way he walks like sebulba, the whole joke about everyone knowing the language so they don't need a translater for the auidnece... Top tier comedy right there.
There's so much negative feedback. shouldn't we be congratulating Starkid for putting together 2 shows AT ONCE? because that is the shit right there. both Ani and Trail to Oregon took a lot of time, work, and emotional attachment. and they did that not only for themselves, but for us.
+Haley Ruccio they're doing such a good job. like go you lil Starkid babies 😊👌 a few of them are involved in Tin Can Bros. production of an original spy-themed musical as well, which is just funkadilly.
+Charity O'Donnell , I liked this one but hated the "Oregon trail" parody. They would have had more fun and so would I if they did the "Organ Trail" zombie version instead.
it takes a bit of getting used to that the actors arent singing, but once you get over that the songs are all bangers and this is probably my favourite soundtrack of any starkid show
@@norawithanh it was just a stylistic choice as far as I can tell. Starkid always likes to try new weird concepts and this was one of them. I think it works pretty well, I wouldn’t mind seeing the idea get tried again
I know this comment was three years ago but did you seriously just diss Phil fucking Collins? Like... I thought he was like the only celebrity/music that the whole universe agreed was good. Like Bob Ross.
I’m so sad that this show doesn’t get as much love as the others. The music arrangement took a second to get used to but I find myself rewatching this one almost every week. The humor is fantastic and the music is so good and it’s so fucking amazing and deserves so much more appreciation.
I actually really like Denise’s character in Ani! Mara is so different from her usual dumbfounded characters like February in starship, keeri in firebringer, and pizza girl from HMB. Mara just adds something new to Denise’s roles and , to me, helps show she can play more than just a dumb blonde
Can you imagine Kylo Ren's reaction to how his grandfather is portrayed? Also, a spoiler for The Last Jedi... Since Rey's parents sold her to buy alcohol and Obi Wan Kenobi is an alcoholic in this, does that mean she could be his granddaughter afterall?
It's another level of parody and piss take when the characters sit down in a bar and dissect everything wrong and nonsensical about the universe they're parodying in a scene that serves no other function but to represent fan criticism and theory
It's actually kind of hilarious how often they've given Joe grey hair in the shows. Good to know he'll continue to look hot as hell when he's middle-aged and grey!
The conversation with Obi Wan is... comedy gold. They made a song with Anakin phrases??? This is just briliant. Brian is so adorable as JJ... Miss Dylan
You know what I think is the worst Starkid show so far? That Ani. You know what I'd give it on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the worst and 10 being the best? I would give it an 8. An 8.5. Not over a 9.8. Because there's always room for perfection. I'm looking out for a 10, because I'm worth it.

Real talk, I'd love it if someone handed me a completely built large lego build with the instructions. Because then I could take it apart, satisfying my primal need to destroy something, and then put it back together to satisfy my need for completion.
I was surprised to learn that a lot of the fans consider this to be their worst production yet. I personally really enjoyed it. I don't think it's their best musical but it's also not their worst. I had a lot of fun watching this.
@@rivby3695 Or Tom is telling the truth? - It's the right head, from our perspective, (Tom) that's making the statement. And the other head answers with a lie. Instead of seeing "That's right" as an answer, we could see it as another statement, like who's telling either the truths or lies. That the right head is telling the lie (and that is a lie). So if the first one is telling the truth (as it have to be in order for this to work.) It's all a matter of perspective, what head is then the right head?... You get me? ..sorry haha
After seeing all the hate this show got in the UA-cam comments, I figured it was almost like my civic duty to post something positive, even if the Team doesn't see it. It's always a risk to stray from a successful formula, but if you don't, how can you grow creatively? I think that having the band perform songs instead of the main cast was a great thing to try, and even if you personally didn't like it, you should at least be able to acknowledge that it allowed the cast to interact with them in a pretty darn hilarious way, not to mention the fact that it left room for some more complex dance routines than have been attempted before. Perhaps part of the issue was that the content was slightly darker than what has been done before (eg. Jar Jars suicide attempt), or that the jokes were too obscure/rooted in Star Wars mythology to be immediately funny. Or maybe it's because of how shortly Ani was released after Twisted. Twisted, which, btw,was funded by fans across the globe. Ani, on the other hand, was paid for out of pocket by a group of people that were just passionate about trying something new. I'm honestly trying so hard to make counter arguments for any potential critiques, but in all honesty, I just loved it, so it's hard to be a Devil's Advocate for something that I don't believe even needs defending.
I can't believe it took me nearly six years to watch this. This musical is like a hidden gem. When this show first came out, I was not a Star Wars fan and I completely glossed over it. But after taking the time to watch the movies, I get the jokes now, and I thought this was outstanding. Heartfelt, moving, and hilarious! This might be one of Team Starkid's funniest musicals, I haven't laughed this hard in a while.
At around 53:25 when JJ is talking about doing the whole world a favor by killing himself, everybody in the audience awwwwes except for this one girl who is just there like HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

It's her! Her name is Denise Donovan. She was also in Firebringer as Keeri, in Twisted as some background roles, like the pregnant girl in "I steal everything", and in Holy Musical Batman as for example Pizza girl and Catwoman. She's really great!
"Welcome to the meeting where should we start?" Obi:"Hi. My name is Obi-Wan Kenobi and I am an alcoholic." Everyone in unison: "Hi Obi-Wan Kenobi." Draco: "My name is Draco Malfoy and I am a racist but I am really nice now so if you could just sign my slip of paper that will get me out of-" Harry: "No, you're staying here until you learn your lesson and be a good boy." Draco with a frown: "But I am a good boy!" Mcdoon: "My name is McDoon and I make the ladies Mcswoon." Everyone in unison: "Hi McDoon." Cletus: "Hi, my name is Cletus Jones and I've killed three people."

imo this has some of the most raw, hard-hitting emotion in all the Starkid shows, especially during Long Ago and Far Away and the scenes between Tarkin and Ani. I think the minimalist (and even ridiculous) aesthetic of it helps with that. The "I been lyin' to myself all these years" line would not be the same coming from someone in a perfect hi-tech Vader costume with the mask and the voice filter. Coming from a guy in a onesie and plastic helmet, it feels so much more genuine because there's no distractions, there's no flashy effects, it's just a dude in a onesie saying that he's worthless, and it feels so much more raw and easier to connect to, because haven't we all been told we couldn't accomplish something and been afraid that everyone was right? One of the things I love about Starkid is how they set up like, "okay, here's how ridiculous this is going to be, play in this space with us" and you go "okay, got it" and then they take that ridiculous premise and the satire and the absurd characters that you've accepted and they break your fucking heart. Once they get you invested in even the most ridiculous stuff, they can weave the funny and the serious and the emotional together in such a masterful way and you're just along for the ride.
This is a great show. The repeated "it's a clever play on words..." gag, the whole JJ Binks storyline (and Brian's protrayal!), Obi-Wan's alcoholism and snuggie costume, ALL the pod-racing. Man. I'll be watching this one again. Go Matt and Nick for a great script!

@@onelargeotter Sebulba is pretty much exactly the same in this as he is in the movie. He's introduced when Jar Jar accidently knocks his meal off a table, he confronts Jar Jar over this and Ani steps in to defend him. Sebulba taunts Ani over bothering to compete in the race despite a human never winning it before and brags about being the favorite to win. Later on he sabotages Ani's pod just like in this, but Ani goes on to win the race anyway. Notably Sebulba and Ani are the only racers to survive the race. I don't know what Sebulba really does after this, he's never seen again in the movies. In the canon of this show, he just kept on the podrace grind and is still the favorite 43 years later and up to his old tricks.
Such an underrated starkid show. Its obviously not as immersive as some of their higher production value shows like starship or twisted but still, the writing's great, the jokes are on point and the music's pretty good too even though it lacks a certain punch when theyre not actually singing it. Overall very fun and engaging show.
yes! there’s something so satisfying about simplistic shows with small casts. the trail to oregon, ani and the guy who didn’t like musicals are my favorites and they’re engaging, hilarious, and entertaining to watch. show stopping number, the montages in ani and pays to be an animal always has me on the floor laughing
I think that the songs in this are even stronger than in other productions. They’re not narrative, so they don’t have to really be in the musical theater style and they are all just great powerful standalone songs, that still augment the story. I think they kind of had to be since the cast isn’t delivering them. If they weren’t that good they would feel out of place and unnecessary.

Y’know, for the amount of crap Ani gets, it really is one of my favorite STARKID shows. I just find myself coming back to it over and over again. The jokes are funny, the songs are catchy (Clark’s always a win), and it’s just got so much heart. You can really tell everyone involved gave it their all. Ani’s just a fun show with a lot of its own unique charm, and it really gets undeservedly brushed aside in favor of some of the more conventional STARKID shows. idk why the Starkid fandom hates this.
But it doesn't have the qualities that make the team's other shows so popular to the fanbase.
none of the songs contribute to the plot or character development. they either lampoon the original source (ie the song composed of "romantic" anikin quotes) or can all be summed up as "you can do it! people said you couldn't do it, but you can do it! wow, look at you, you're doing it!"
i mean, if you like that sort of genre of 80s-synth-pump-up music, then hell yeah, this musical is chockablock full of it. but it's not my cup of tea.
I've avoided watching this musical because I know basically nothing about Star Wars and won't get the jokes or know the characters

To be fair, Clark didn’t have to memorize anything to play music
Not just Clark, the entire band for both shows was the same, huge props to all of them! Also, pretty sure Clark did have to memorise stuff, I don't think he has sheets in front of him.
I feel bad not a lot of people laughed at the "I'm old enough to be her father in law" joke

I couldn't help, but to laugh at that line!
I only god it my third watch around, I am ashamed of myself XD
It just occurred to me that this is probably the first time we've seen Joe Walker in the "straight man" role in a StarKid production. Not seeing him in a ridiculous costume is a bit strange, but it's definitely refreshing!
I love that they broke typecasting in the summer shows! :)
OOH. I feel a bit of an idiot now. :S Sorry! :)
No worries. It's a double meaning. A humorous play on words. That's where the comedy comes in. ;)

IVE NEVER SEEN STAR WARS AND I LOVE THIS MUSICAL SJSJ
i am so enraged by the negativity ani has gotten. this show was genuinely so beautiful and so great. and it annoys me that the fans of starkid have started to judge the value of a show based on who is in it. how fucking childish is that? starkid is not the people involved but the stories they tell.
the fact that so many people are disappointed by the lack of quality in the production??? what, did you expect this to be the next avpm? did you expect that team starkid, a theatre COMPANY, would create a new series of free shows? nick and matt spend so much money as well as time on shows that don't receive any income because if they sold tickets, they would be sued for infringing copyright. and i'm pretty sure ani was a show that couldn't sell tickets. if nick and matt and anyone else had spent so much money on the set and costumes etc..., they would lose money and that is not how a company works.
also, as members of starkid get older, many of them receive more jobs outside of performing in these productions. i think the fans need to realise that all members have a life outside of starkid and not all of them can find the time to perform in musicals where they most likely, aren't going to see an income of money.
this brings me to albums and other merch sold by starkid. this is one of the main ways they get their income if they can't sell tickets. the problem is, it's easy to get a hold of their music without having to pay for it. again, they lose money.
it frustrates me that so many fans couldn't see past the quality of the set design, the costumes, the people involved, to actually watch the story. i'm going to admit, i have never seen a star wars movie. the only way i know anything about star wars is through playing lego star wars. despite, that the jokes are easy to understand BECAUSE THEY EXPLAIN THEM. i didn't know who mara jada was but ani saying 'i'm old enough to be her father-in-law'.

I’m 9 years late and a huge Star Wars fan so yeah no shame.
I love that joe legit looks like someone and acts like someone who is in Star Wars
I think a lot of it comes from the way he carries himself. He got the walk of some of the guys we see walking around the death star in the movies

I love that they all wear black converse!
same with the trail to oregon xd
qwerty qwerty and in tto the converse are white, must be some kind of parallel between the 2014 summer shows
Sometimes I wonder how much STARKID spends on Converse every year😅

Me: A Starship Ranger?
“A slave girl.”
Me: oh
Also, is this the same actress that played February or do they just sound similar?
Yes, it's her.
It's her! Her name is Denise Donovan. She was also in Firebringer as Keeri, in Twisted as some background roles, like the pregnant girl in "I steal everything", and in Holy Musical Batman as for example Pizza girl and Catwoman. She's really great!
@@saphira4366 she's also dance captain for a bunch of their musicals. She's one of starkid's best dancers.
I also thought about that! 😂
It is her,
and you sound like a big starship fan (like me)
They actually made those lines into a song and its brilliant and omg that's the brilliance of starkid guys they're gold I'm crying

imo this has some of the most raw, hard-hitting emotion in all the Starkid shows, especially during Long Ago and Far Away and the scenes between Tarkin and Ani.

I'm now 54 minutes in and JAR JAR DID NOT DESERVE THE BACKLASH I was 8 and I LOVED HIM
did you get my text? well you didn't text me back is your name Paul?
Okay I've never seen Star Wars...so who is Sebulba and what does he ...do?
@@onelargeotter had the same question

Ani is honestly one of my favorites!!! Next to Potter and Firebringer
yes! there’s something so satisfying about simplistic shows with small casts. the trail to oregon, ani and the guy who didn’t like musicals are my favorites and they’re engaging, hilarious, and entertaining to watch. show stopping number, the montages in ani and pays to be an animal always has me on the floor laughing

Phantome Is On Mars :)
I love literally every song this production has to offer. So well written and performed.
Ani’s not a bad musical, you guys are just mean.
