These dresses are custom made & ordered. When she tried it on for the first alteration, it was already too late because that was the dress purchased & ordered for her.
I would spend the money on a breast reduction, rather than needing to have a custom dress to accommodate the large breast size. I’ve had two friends who had reductions due to pain, reduced mobility, fashion limitations etc. It improved their lives in so many ways. This bride seems very happy though, so good for her.
Katie's dress is perfect for her, super feminine without shouting hips & tummy. Randy is the best at helping the ladies at Kleinfelds. Vera is a sewing genius. Niema looks lovely.
I'm glad she could afford those alternations (and looked absolutely great in it!) but it speaks to why it's so important for brides to buy well within budget because the dress is but a fraction of the final cost
I just had one 3 weeks ago, was a 38j. I was lucky enough that it is covered by our health care. Second best decision for my health (first was a hysterectomy 9 years ago). We women go through a lot, just to get out of pain. I hope that your healing went well, I'm still full of bruising and steri strips and lack of sensation, but I'm happy I'm on my way to healing, at least now I can make it around my block and not have stabbing back pain!

I remember an older episode from years ago and the bride's bust was 2 times the size of Niema. The alterations alone were $9000 and they paid it. Randy advised to spend that money on a breast reduction...couldn't believe the bride walked out in a strapless dress that did nothing for her. It was sad.

I'm sure the ladies in alterations probably realized at the second fitting that Naima would have been better off abandoning that dress and starting over with a custom dressmaker, but there was no way an employee of that store was going to refer a customer to an outside business.
I loved Niema's confidence and the way she powered through the challenge of having such a large bust. Vera and her staff deserve a lot of credit, too. They certainly got a glimpse of what big-breasted women go through and got the job done. They can move on to easier alterations, but Niema has to deal with her unconventional size for the rest of her life. She has an amazing attitude.

I knew of a woman who was much smaller than Naima who’s health insurance covered the cost of a breast reduction due to severe back pain. I’m thinking that pretty soon she might have to opt for that because the rest of her is beautiful.

Naima was ecstatically happy, so all of Vera's hard work was worth it. Being plus size isn't always a bed of roses and the lovely way all brides are treated is a breath of fresh air.
But for 12 grand, could Naima have admitted to anything other than satisfaction with the dress? After the straps were added, which basically remade the dress, I thought the subsequent alterations made the dress look progressively worse. I think by the second fitting, the ladies in alterations probably realized that Naima would have been better off abandoning that dress and going to a custom seamstress, but referring clients away from the store is probably against company policy.

Agree. The dress was a busy mess to start with. The strap alteration made perfect sense physically and esthetically, but the subsequent changes were a disaster. For example, who in their right mind, skinny or fat, wants a dress that cups their ass? The result from the alterations brought this dress from unattractive to terrible.
Jo and Al may have not existed at this time. This is really old. And there are plenty of bridal shops here in the states now with other "Jo and Als". Just because they're not on TV doesn't mean that they don't exist.
The most important thing about carrying extra weight is not to learn to accept yourself as you are with the extra weight. The most important thing is to lose the weight because as you go along in life carrying all that extra weight, it will become harder and harder to get around and health problems will set in and you will suffer so much. It’s not about acceptance. It’s about being kind to yourself….and your family members who suffer along with you because they care about you.

Look at Randy and how young he looks. "Big Bliss" was a spin-off when SYTTD first started, over a decade ago. Jo and Al probably weren't a thing. Bridal was totally geared towards smaller brides, and it has only changed in the last 10 years or so. And the situation was the same in the UK as it was here, so taking a trip to Essex would have done absolutely nothing. I think that she should have tried on dresses to see what style and fabric looked good on her then go to a seamstress and make her own dress. She would have saved thousands of dollars.

I also had extremely big bust and had it reduced many year ago, best decision I have made for my health.
Vera is so patient; a master seamstress indeed. My mother used to sew my clothes until I started to high school. I never saw her make anything that involved & she was a very good seamstress.
I think the team of tailors are GOOD , i love that they made practically a new dress for Naima , with so many changes the dress look amazing

Me too. I really need to lose weight for my health issues. Plus I have more energy as I lose. Seeing Katie’s family are all overweight made me feel bad. I hope Katie has a beautiful wedding and is happily married.
Could she not have mentioned all these extras like the 'fishtail' that she wanted at the beginning instead of springing it on the alterations lady when she thought she'd finished the job?

If she had $12000, she could have bought 2 tickets to UK, a grand travelling and a grand for accom., and appointment with Jo and Al and got a dress that looked nicer and probably cost $4000 with alterations.

Naima was ecstatically happy, so all of Vera's hard work was worth it. Being plus size isn't always a bed of roses and the lovely way all brides are treated is a breath of fresh air.
But for 12 grand, could Naima have admitted to anything other than satisfaction with the dress? After the straps were added, which basically remade the dress, I thought the subsequent alterations made the dress look progressively worse. I think by the second fitting, the ladies in alterations probably realized that Naima would have been better off abandoning that dress and going to a custom seamstress, but referring clients away from the store is probably against company policy.

8 GRAND in alterations alone! She should have just had someone make her a dress for a lot less. Or flown to Curvy Brides Boutique!!! So silly to spend that much on a dress for a couple of hours. But ....her dress, her wedding, her bill! lol
The more I think about this episode, the more I wonder about Naima. If this is how much she wanted to transform a dress she picked because, presumably, she liked it, the more I wonder when she will start trying to changing the husband she picked because, presumably, she liked him.
I hope I'm wrong, for the sake of this marriage. But I did not get good vibes from this bride.

Really nice to see a Harlem wedding. And also to see the alteration process. Naima worked so well with Vera. They were both so great in their attitudes.. Vera can do anything that any bride wants.

Sorry but that little “fishtail “ she designed looked ridiculous …..the seamstresses must have been going out of their minds stressing one minute and laughing the next … the dress looked so much better before she messed with the bottom of it..

Agree. The dress was a busy mess to start with. The strap alteration made perfect sense physically and esthetically, but the subsequent changes were a disaster. For example, who in their right mind, skinny or fat, wants a dress that cups their ass? The result from the alterations brought this dress from unattractive to terrible.
These larger ladies need Jo and Al .
Jo and Al may have not existed at this time. This is really old.
And there are plenty of bridal shops here in the states now with other "Jo and Als". Just because they're not on TV doesn't mean that they don't exist.
I agree...certainly not 12.000 dollars either but definitely a far better dress it would have been without alterations
The most important thing about carrying extra weight is not to learn to accept yourself as you are with the extra weight. The most important thing is to lose the weight because as you go along in life carrying all that extra weight, it will become harder and harder to get around and health problems will set in and you will suffer so much. It’s not about acceptance. It’s about being kind to yourself….and your family members who suffer along with you because they care about you.

1200?!😯 oh hell no. She needed to go to Al and Jo in Essex. The plane ticket, hotel, and dress combined would have cost less than what she paid. Plus Al and Jo's have far prettier dresses.
Look at Randy and how young he looks. "Big Bliss" was a spin-off when SYTTD first started, over a decade ago. Jo and Al probably weren't a thing.
Bridal was totally geared towards smaller brides, and it has only changed in the last 10 years or so. And the situation was the same in the UK as it was here, so taking a trip to Essex would have done absolutely nothing.
I think that she should have tried on dresses to see what style and fabric looked good on her then go to a seamstress and make her own dress. She would have saved thousands of dollars.
Vera is a darling! She is kind and thoughtful to her brides. When someone’s mother actually struck her, it really upset me! A lovely, lovely, woman!
