my drum 🥁 🇦🇺 teacher put me on to Virgil many years ago ... we used to see his band “loose change” feel blessed to have seen him and Remo Belli in about 1988 at a drum clinic too.
I'm 41 yrs old and i've been listening to lots of drummers like im sure most of you have. I always believed that it's stupid to say "HE is THE best drummer in the world!" When asked who could that be, but.. Virgil might just be the best drummer in the world. Hahah ..
There are legendary artist and technicians out there. But Virgil is a straight up alien. It’s the only explanation for why he’s this insane. I’m sure the real reason is bc he trains non stop. When were all sleeping he’s still practicing.
No one else is playing with this equally distributed combination of chops, dynamic control, and creativity (and humility). There are other chops approaching this, but they aren’t as seamlessly and smoothly refined.
@@bobbyosborne2375 I mean, in music like this, there’s really no call for musicality; anyone listening to this music is a musician most likely, their target audience is musicians.
@@frelopermanboy7426 it seems like most musicians, me included, love and want to hear melody. Not just random time signatures. I'm not taking anything away from Virgil, or his talent. Dudes got plenty. This just reminds me of Holdsworth. All the talent in the world, but just went off on musical tangents that no one but the most knowledgeable, and expert musicians could follow his music. Better go major in theory, and study jazz to even get close to following this stuff.
@@bobbyosborne2375 yeah I get what you mean. Great comparison to Allan. I think Virgil’s playing is entirely set upon pushing the boundaries with music theory. He’s just doing what a lot of drummers are not doing. Honestly, I can’t really listen to the music he plays/his solo project just for the sake of listening and enjoying the music. But I do absolutely love watching him.
Virgils technique is incredible, but his kicks would never cut through a metal mix like this, and at higher tempos they would turn to mud, because that’s what an acoustic kick drum does. That’s what triggers are for.
Seeing someone apply double kick techniques that are usually only seen in metal to odd time jazz beats is just amazing! Too many jazz players spend all their time complaining about triggers and tradition to think for themselves.
That is drum pattern 1 in my lesson book, now to move on to something a little harder, pattern 2, it is in 37/64 @ 165bpm but there is a 23 count that switches to a 17 every other 5 bars and I swap the accent from my left foot to my right hand then to my left foot to my left hand and then repeat but in reverse..........I probably shouldn't joke, he might actually work it out just for a laugh....I love Virgil. For he IS the Drumming (spoken by a little girl dressed in a black robe with glowing blue eyes).
I've been playing the drums and learning about various kinds of music since I was a kid. But I finally gave up after listening to Planet X. There's just too much information in one person. Virgil might be the only drummer who has made me afraid to play the drums again
I'm an Australian and I absolutely love what Virgil does however, how often this stuff comes up in conversation is negligible and doesn't relate to 99.9% of drummers in the world. I would rather listen to someone who can lay down some fat beats and show me how I can adapt those beats to my style of playing.
Yeah, he's one of those "beyond" characters. The deal with this stuff is he's ever expanding and pushing his abilities. And to many, it's overwhelming and out of reach. But that's what he loves to do. But he can also play in any style with great feel and musicality. As a young player, he auditioned for and was accepted to play with Bill Evans' trio. So at that level, one had to have such a vast musical ability and artistry as to be a world class jazz player. Yet for whatever reason, it didn't come to pass. And the rest is history according to the music Virgil wanted to make for himself. It's the same for a lot of people who encounter John McLaughlin, Allan Holdsworth or Shawn Lane. The relentless intensity, innovation and virtuosity can be not only daunting but exhausting too. Even though it's amazing they can play at this level, It's a lot to take in.
Virgil is one of the most important drummers in the world. Such a a great influence for me.
While playing this, Virgil was solving complex Quadratic equations in his head.
🤣🤣🤣
He definitely was.
That's common for a robot.
Virgil is the most musical and most advanced of those who explore crazy stuff.
Virgil just gets better all the time!
What a talent!
He explores beats and rhythms like no other. His foot control and dynamics are absolutely crazy.
My very first exposure to this guy. Guess I know what I'm doing all day now... digging out from under a rock
He's out of this world amazing on every level... The man is on a totally different planet, galaxy, star system!
Planet X!
Virgil is the Alan Holdsworth of drums ! Im sorry I can not explain what I hear and see any other way !!
my drum 🥁 🇦🇺 teacher put me on to Virgil many years ago ... we used to see his band “loose change”

Virgil is the best like a machine .. one of a kind human machine
I met Virgil and he told me he never takes a day off from playing. I believe him! A true master of the instrument.

Maybe you already know Yoni Madar...If you don't check him out. Not to worry I am a big fan of Virgil Donati.

Next level with Virgil.
No one else is playing with this equally distributed combination of chops, dynamic control, and creativity (and humility). There are other chops approaching this, but they aren’t as seamlessly and smoothly refined.
No musicality though. Just gibberish. I heard a drummer and bass player just noodling.

Top 10 en rock, fusión, progresivo. Un capo, un crack, un maestro!!
My goodness. He keeps drumming always fresh nowadays. This kinda video is what the drummers need to watch !
The best foot techniques out there , sounds so good , metal players should be inspired by this instead of triggering there bass drums

який же він крутий! Унікальний стиль, створений завдяки рідкісному природному таланту і нескінченній наполегливій праці!
I went to a clinic of his in 98 and was floored by his playing. Wow...
Amazing!
Virgil is a beast!!!!
And that is how you play drums !👍
Progressive drumming GOAT.

VIRGIL THE MASTER
Next level...
🙏🏻♥️ Súper Sir. Virgil Donati!!
VD defines own Level. Always pushing borders
Good freaking grief. Even Thomas Lang must be having a heart attack.
I know this is a Collector's kit, but which shells is he using? I'm looking at doing a Collector's build soon and his toms just sound incredible.
God bless America
I’ve been playing for about 25 years but Virgil makes me feel like I’m a beginner.
Three people tried to count along.
Don L. with the best 'pressed shirts' in the biz. Who irons those shirts? They're always impeccable ;)
This is Level 1 drumming.
Level 3 = Good
Level 2 = You can play anything.
Level 1 = Robot
Until now, I thought Thomas Lang was clearly the best drummer in the World.
But Virgil Donati is incredible too 😳
😮wow
When you take the best drummer in the world ... and compare him/her with Virgil.. you realize how much they still have to learn.. wow
It's official. Virgil is an Alien. But sooo good
Bleed Virgil style

Yeah right....lol...
I can barely do that pattern with my hands man.....
Cool playing...
If Nikola Tesla was a drummer he’d be Virgil
I'd say Leonardo
Ok fine, you’re hired.
👍👍👍

DT should choose him.

Some guys are just sick in the head 😂 Like the greatest Buddy Rich said “You couldn’t get inside my head “
Fug me runnin!
Thomas Lang and him...

Thomas who...? LOL!
Thomas Lane could play that also I'm sure it would take him some practice and sometime but he can get it down everything comes with practice
F'ing Freak!
Concepts as challenges and complex do not apply to Virgil ...
Yeah... no.
The man is a joke.
