The vast majority of people who’ve lost a limb can still feel it - not as a memory or vague shape, but in complete lifelike detail. They can flex their phantom fingers and sometimes even feel the chafe of a watch band or the throb of an ingrown toenail. What causes these phantom limb sensations? Joshua W. Pate explains how the brain reacts to a missing limb.

Snake... why are we still here? Just to suffer? Every night, I can feel my leg and my arm... even my fingers... the body I've lost... the comrades I've lost... won't stop hurting. It's like they're all still there. You feel it too, don't you? I'm the one who got caught up with Cipher. A group above nations... even the US. And I was the parasite below, feeding off Zero's power. They came after you in Cyprus... then Afghanistan... Cipher... just keeps growing. Swallowing everything in it's path. Getting bigger and bigger... Who knows how big now? Boss. I'm gonna make 'em give back our past... take back everything that we've lost. And I won't rest... until we do.
I was surprised no one mentioned mgsv.
I'm suprised no one seen this
Oh you beat me to it.
A brilliant shitpost
Yeeeeeesss i was looking for the metal gear post :D
This is scary, especially the animation..
Lol
These models are making me very uncomfortable, looks like an alien hugging.

I was born without fingers on my left hand, but I can still feel it as if it was the same as my right hand. I’ve never really told anyone or thought all that much of it though because I don’t remember a time I didn’t feel fingers I don’t have and I’ve always thought of phantom limbs as being exclusively for people who lost their limbs later in life. That’s kinda cool to know what it is and why it happens!! 😊
this terrified me and it is awesome wow

First of all, I'm completely with you on this. I'm not part of any religion. I believe that science is the best way of knowing the world around us. However, there are some things which aren't predictable or anything (intrinsic randomness and whatnot) and that is what I meant by the word God.

I'M SO CONFUSED WHY DOES EVERYBODY HERE KEEP SAYING THAT THEY'RE HERE JUST TO SUFFER
W3IRDGIRL N3XTDOOR It’s a quote from a video game, a guy called miller talks about his phantom arm and leg
Cause we don’t know why we’re here

It's a quote from metal gear solid V, Miller expresses his feelings over his lost limbs
It’s a reference lmao

Each Ted ed video have it's own unique animation. Love it!
I don't know anyone that suffers with phantom limb nor can I imagine what it's like. I'm not even a doctor. But I find the subject truly fascinating and my deepest sympathies go to those who do suffer from it, and this video is just a visually and coherently awesome informational video. Well done TED.
I find your Intro music is very pleasing
Yeees i love that sound too!! It's so satisfying... !
if anyone wants to learn more about this stuff, there is an amazing book called "THE TELLTALE BRAIN" by VS Ramachandran, it is awesome
There is another that curtails arounds this very topic, called "phantoms in our brain"
Definitely it is much more clarified in The Tell-Tale Brain.
*Wellllll* 2:19 is definitely one of the creepiest things I've ever seen... 😱
Who knew TED-eds incredible animation could one day make me feel terrified whilst drinking my afternoon coffee!? ☕
It's a little creepy, but pretty accurate to how it's normally represented in medicine. If you look up "cortical homunculus" on google you'll see that the models generally look the same as the one in the video.
Jeeez, that's a google image search I never thought I'd see - yep, Ted-Ed pretty much nailed it - the creepiness is real though!

I remember learning about this kind of stuff in my Psychology class. We also discussed what I think was called Alien Hand Syndrome or something like that. It's when you have a body part, such as a hand, as normal. However, you don't perceive it to be yours, and you may even struggle to control it. You may even have to use your other hand to keep it from doing anything without your noticing.

Kaz, I'm already a demon.
This video is an absolute work of art! All the details - the hazy animation sequences, the dichromatic color schemes, and the eerie shifting (at times ominous) music complement the theme and the content so well. Extremely well narrated by Addison Anderson as always. Kudos to all the members behind this video. Love your channel. Keep up the GREAT work!
Each time the narrator says Phantom Pain
Metal Gear Solids Sin of the father starts to play in my head
I am in awe with how beautifully the animation matches with the theme every single time! Absolutely flawless execution and such intriguing topics being discussed. Thanks so much TedEd ❤️
2:37 yup brain, that's definitely what we look like, keep on the good work
I think the animation was a great display of what they are trying to say.
This is a very interesting topic. I remember watching some video showing how certain disabled people who lost the ability to move/use a limb due to brain injury (or something like that..I can't really remember) have somehow managed to start moving and using those limbs again after exercising and trying to move them often for a long time, even though it didn't seem possible. Apparently their brains preserved those pathways (sorry, I don't remember the technical term) and managed to restore some of the missing information.
A map makes a lot of sense and that explains all those baffling videos of people using prosthetics, and how they manage to control them like that (I'm not sure, I'm no expert, but it probably relies on brain signals being sent to the nerve ends.. right?).
I think looking further into the subject of pain and pain signals sent by the brain could help us not only with physical issues and ailments, but mental ones as well. For example, with people who suffer from chronic pain due to mental disorders and issues(I'm pretty sure my IBS can be largely attributed to my mental state as well), and even people who suffer grave illnesses due to it(though that might be a completely different subject, since it's more than just pain).
Sorry for the long comment, but this is very interesting!
I feel so weird after this video lol

Amazing topic, animation, and music. It feels like a movie! I like the thoughtfulness of the animation where they have reduced it to the bare essentials, minimizing distraction

And to think I never would have known about phantom limbs without TED-Ed! Always such a pleasure watching these interesting videos :)
Finally, a Ted Ed video that doesn't have animation that makes me feel like I'm watching a PBS kids show for toddlers.
I've never lost a body part in my life, but recently I had a dream my left index finger was shot off. It was such an odd feeling. After having it tended to, I found that holding things was weird. I felt this off sensation, as if I was incomplete yet whole at the same time. When I pointed to the sky, it felt as natural as ever, but it also felt tremedouzly new because while it felt like I was pointing, it also felt like nothing was there that should be there because it wasn't. I found trouble grabbing things or ever moving my hand without the constant ebbing feeling that something was not where it should have been, yet it felt like it was there kinda
Such beautiful animations you guys are putting out
My grandpa had both of his legs amputated. He was describing his phantom pains to us and his weird it was. For him he said it felt more like a sore muscle or a cramp. He was a good grandpa.

Great video, highly informative.
Deeply disappointed in the lack of MGSV phantom pain in this comment section
The animation is unnervingly captivating. I love it.
Cortical homunculus gave me nightmares. :'(
It would be cool to see an explanation for how people get pahntom limbs that aren't in the body's normal structure. Eg. I have a friend that has a phantom tail, and I have heard from many other people online that they have gotten pahntom ears, wings, etc.
I absolutely adore the aesthetic and music of this video
Improved so much through the years!
I learnt more on ted ed than in school haha!
That was interesting! I always thought congenital amputees (people born without a limb(s)) didn't experience phantom pains/phantom limbs, because I didn't think that could happen from someone who'd never had that limb in the first place.
In that vein, quick question - do all or most congenital amputees experience phantom limbs/pain, or is it rarer than in traumatic amputees?
Your videos are best
