    Each year in the United States, players of sports and recreational activities receive between 2.5 and 4 million concussions. How dangerous are all those concussions? The answer is complicated and lies in how the brain responds when something strikes it. Clifford Robbins explains the science behind concussions.

    It's an odd thing to think about, but if your skull was made of steel, concussions would happen even more often. No matter how strong your head is, your brain will still bounce around your skull on sudden impacts.

    • @Will-bz6cx
      @Will-bz6cx 6 років тому +39

      TriiiKill the best way to prevent this (hypothetically) is to cushion the brain from the skull.

      If your was steel your neck would break in order to compensate for the loss in strength. Since steel is more malleable, you need more to keep the rigidness.

    I learned more from this than from my experience of a concussion. For example, I had constant headaches for several months after my initial injury, yet no one was able to diagnose me. It's insane that a 6-minute video taught me more about my concussion than 5+ doctors did.

      True and you can ask a doctor to check you and and they won’t detect anything wrong but sometimes a person can tell when something isn’t right with themselves after an injury.

    I'm a soccer referee, and it always saddens me to see the culture around heading the ball. The league I do the most games for has rules against it up to 11 years old, but I feel that does more harm than good. After that rule was put in place, 12 year olds simply started heading the ball more, because they have been waiting to do it now, even when, from a purely game oriented perspective, using the feet/chest is the better option for scoring a goal. Coaches and team mates have always congratulated players on "good" ball heads. I really wish more people knew the impacts(no pun intended, although it is appreciated) of heading the ball.

      RedDarkness Basicly in a coma your brain is in emergency shut down mode. All non-essential systems shut down. When I was in a coma I had weird dreams that ended up being false memories. For example my 2 brothers tried to yell to wake me up from my coma. I didn't wake up but my Brain put them into my dream. When I woke up and started to pice together my life and Brain, I realized it was a dream that formed to a false memory. These false memories are common in people that have had a Traumatic Brain Injury like I had.

    I’m going through post-concussion syndrome right now. I was rear-ended late last year, on my final week of classes (and my degree). If my doctor had stressed to me to rest for 2 weeks, I would’ve followed through, but because I didn’t, I’m paying for it now.
    I’m sensitive to light, especially when flashing, I feel more depressed nowadays, I’ll randomly have a crying fit, I have blurry vision, loss of balance, and my grammar is sometimes switched or I pause and lose my train of thought often. It’s getting worse as the stress piles on: I was really freaked out last week, an instructor was having a hard time trying to explain something to me in the simplest way, and I was trying so hard to listen, but I just couldn’t hear what they were telling me to do. I also zone out or get distracted easily when reading directions, or listening to people talk in-general.
    I have to go to a concussion clinic to get checked outs. But I’m afraid of them telling me that I need to take 3-4 months off from my Master’s program to recover. I know it’s the only way for me to be myself again, and succeed in school, but it really upsets me.

    I got a mild concussion this summer, the last week of school actually. Like literally on a Monday. It was a work injury, I pulled open a cupboard in the break room to get a glass for water. Now, usually there is a bit of resistance when opening it because there was something on top of the cupboard, I don’t remember what exactly, so I’ve learned to pay a little resistance no mind. This time, however, someone thought it was a great idea to put 4 liters of hand sanitizer in one of those box thingys you put dishes into in an industrial dishwasher. Thing is made out of hard plastic. It fell right on top of my head. Boom, mild concussion. I called the local non-emergency health line. The nurse on the other end went “yeah, no. You gotta get someone to come get you from work and then stay under surveillance at home for 24 hours.” Needless to say my mom had child sick for the first time in many years the following day. A mild concussion for me was constant and pounding headache for days. I mostly slept and/or listened to podcasts, because you can’t look at screens or read unless you want a chance of chronic headaches. So yeah, no. I had frequent and long-lasting headaches for a month or two afterwards, they’re mostly gone now.
    I look up on top of that cupboard every time now.

    When I was about twelve, I fell down from a pony on my head once. I immediately got back up and continued riding. Later I blacked out completely and forgot the rest of my ride in its entirety. I was diagnosed with a mild concussion.
    In the year after, I had migraines every week, which got less and less in the years after. I still wonder if the two are connected or whether they can even be connected.

    It is amazing to me how many people on the internet and that I know in real life, including in my family, are beginning to reckon with the persistent changes in their identity that have resulted from what we call minor head injuries. I too have been concussed and I never was able to reconcile the difference between what it meant to me and how it was acknowledged by those around me. Recovery can take years, and a great deal of support. It remains a major turning point in my life, and how it affected my behavior now strongly informs how I perceive the behavior of others.
    How did what is clearly a major aspect of life go under reported for so many hundreds of years? I'm very grateful for all the work scientist and doctors have done to expose this hidden disease. We need to re-examine our relationship with sports, particularly kids' sports, and remove the needless violence that we now know is really harmful.
