- From an opera gala concert, Munich 1988, soprano Julia Varady sings the aria "Pace, pace, mio Dio" from Giuseppe Verdi's "La Forza del Destino". Conducting the Bamberg Symphony is Leopold Hager.
A versatile repertoire that no soprano of her time could match & this holds true to this day. All superbly sung & interpreted as well.
Varady remains one of the most treasurable sopranos in my experience.
WOW!!! Simple, natural, elegant, nothing fake, nothing exaggerated.... gorgeous!! Thank you!
All characters Julia Varady portrays, come across with unrestrained intensity and great conviction! An absolutely impressive singer, and a very engaging personality!
Divine. Perfect 🙌🏻
amazing performance!

She was indeed born in Oradia, Romania. This part of Transylvania borders on Hungary and 20% of the population of Transylvania is Hungarian. Her family is Hungarian which makes her part of the minority population of Hungarians living in Romania. This is the main reason she left Romania for as a minority citizen she would never have had the career that she wanted. This is something she has stated herself. Her early training was in Cluj as you say.
Lovely, Karen... something quite special about watching the actual performance! Looking forward to more, as always :)

from Wikipedia:
Júlia Várady (Hungarian: Várady Júlia, born Júlia Tözsér, September 1, 1941) is a German soprano of Hungarian origin born in Nagyvárad, Hungary (today Oradea, Romania).
SUPERB!
Életem nagy élményei közé tartoznak a Vele látott előadások Bécsben, Stuttgartban, Münchenben. S persze amikor Bécsben interjút készíthettem a Művésznővel. A "post-Callas" éra sokak szerint legjelentősebb szopránja.
She has that hungarian special, in her voice. It is a special center of the voice with a petto di voice that only few can get away with. Souliotis did not.. Sass, well who knows. .-)
Voce di petto should be there in all voices. Souliotis lost her voice from singing roles too young, not from proper use of voce di petto
Her dress looks like Princess Diana's wedding dress.
She must have had the same dressmaker as Joan Sutherland.
But what the heck if you sing like that you be in you birthday suit for all I care.
Miss Sutherland might objek to that :-o)
In all fairness, fashion-wise, the 80s were not flattering for many of our favorite opera stars!
The butterfly on the top of the cut in the dress looks hidious. Her sining is fist class.
Se non fosse che per l'orribile fioccone bianco credo che non ci si accorgerebbe di lei.
