Varady & her husband probably knew her instrument best & when she retired at age 60 her instrument was apparently still in fine condition. Whatever the reasons for her moving away from performing, I am not aware of but even now, I believe she still is active as a teacher & vocal coach. She remains for me one of the greatest lyric spinto sopranos of her time & not nearly as acclaimed as her talents warranted. Few, if any, other sopranos of her time had such a variety of repertoire & all immaculately performed. I did not discover her singing until after hearing her stunningly beautiful Kaiserin in Solti‘s DIE FRAU OHNE SCHATTEN recording & have remained an advocate of her art ever since. She presents one of the most memorable O PATRIA MIA interpretations in my memory.
