Beware, this is going to be a long comment. Mark, as soon as you said that you have to stay local to Ohio, I was like "BAM, thats the problem right there." I've been watching your videos because you remind me so much of where I was in life about 10 years ago, and i've been rooting for you. I'm not rich, but I did get to a point now where I paid off my student loans, I am happy to stay in the job/town i'm in, I own a small home, and I don't have to watch every penny like a hawk. I have also watched my several siblings and cousins who are a few years younger than me, make their stumbles and mistakes, and also make their successes. The following advice is from my own experience and from observing them. I credit alot of where I am now to the fact that I cast my job search over the entire country. (I work in I.T.) You have an enormous advantage, like I did, to the fact that you don't have kids to tie you in one place. I know you mentioned your mom, and I don't know the specifics of her situation but.....will medicaid/medicare pay for a social worker to visit her every so often? Perhaps if you land a good paying job in another state, you could hire a social work student or nursing student from a college near her to visit her every now and then. I would say that at least 70% of your career roadblocks are because you are limiting yourself to Ohio. Like they say on airplanes, you have to put the oxygen mask on yourself first before you try to help anyone else. I think it's good that you are considering different career options. My cousin, who has a Masters in Art Therapy, is about your age, and she went back to school to finished an accelerated 2 year nurse practitioner program. Like this one. www.son.rochester.edu/academics/abpnn/ . I don't know if this would interest you at all, but men are in high demand for medical professions like this, rather the reverse of your current industry. I also know the thought of more student debt probably kills you......but in alot of professions like that, many employers have programs to pay back the loan for the employee and their are govt programs like that too. You also should consider...would my day to day standard of living be better if I did this? I think it would be, even with the extra debt, because you'd have a higher income, and a very employable profession no matter where in the country you are. Your bachelors in Clin Psy might also transfer some credits. Just something to think about. But at the very least, figure out a way to cast your net beyond Ohio. Good luck.
I've had several people tell me my boss is intimidated by me. Not that I'm going to kick his ass but take his job. And I agree, I can't even get a living wage. Guess I'll just have to do it on my own.
Could you please give some tips on how to find an apartment? Like how can you tell if the management is good, actually in the office when you need them, responds to maintenance issues, etc.? How do you know if there are pest issues (roaches, spiders, etc.)? Can you trust any review sites like apartmentratings.com? Are you less likely to have pest issues on the second floor of an apartment than the ground (first) floor? Thanks!
I had intended to make a video about this when I lived in Athens, then another one when I came to Columbus. The thing is, it varies widely based on where you live. It can be hard to tell what properties are actually bad because every apartment complex has a lot of bad reviews. I would say take a tour of the ones you like and then compare the reviews online. Hang out there at night to see what it's like. You should be clear of everything but bedbugs as long as you stay in a more expensive area. Those things are everywhere. I would stick to Google and Yelp reviews. Floor level shouldn't make a difference although lower floors do tend to get mice. Just don't live near the woods. You'll have bugs.
I think you should go ahead with your thought to do a video about this! I think that subject would play really well.... an industry insider's tips for renters on how to evaluate potential apartment complexes they are thinking about moving to. I bet that would get a ton of views. You could give a disclaimer at the start that obviously location will be a factor, and that you aren't able to get that specific.... apts in NYC will have different considerations than Louisiana so people will have to use their own judgement on the obvious issues like that.....but even if you kept to more general advice, I bet people would want to watch it.
Mark, I like my job, but my boss is a bully. I also am discriminated against because of my age. If I lose my job I may never be able to get another one because of my age. I'm not ready to retire. I'm sorry you have so many problems with your job and job search. At least you have age in your favor. Just keep trying and the right job will come along eventually. It's a tough job market and I feel horrible for people your age. When I was your age there were a lot of jobs. Try not to let your present job wear you down. I spent many nights crying because my bully boss beat me up emotionally. Finally after 10 bullying years she is alittle better because I finally told her I couldn't work with her anymore unless she stops mistreating me. We had a long talk because I was going to quit and believe me I needed my job. I just couldn't take it anymore. Think positive thoughts and hope for the best. Keep plugging away at the job search. I just know you will find what you are hoping for.
I'm super late but it sounds like you were on a "blacklist". It seems like that industry in that area is small so is it possible you pissed someone off at a past job and that got passed around to other companies? That's the only reason I can think of that people from different companies who claim they will get back to you after you get so far in the interviewing process never call you back. Either that or something comes up in your background check (maybe this youtube channel or something in your past?).
I don't have anything on my background. I recently had to do an FBI and BCII check that was clear. I've passed checks for Uber and Lyft recently too. They may be finding the channel but I don't think it's likely. First, there's nothing on here that is inappropriate and second, it's hard to find if you search my name. You have to type it as one word instead. I did that on purpose for this very reason. I've had the thought about the blacklist but it's not logistically possible. The industry is HUGE. It's literally thousands of people just in this city. It's the biggest rental market in the country. And if it were the case, I wouldn't be able to get any job in the industry. I do eventually get them but after being turned down so many times.
I'm not aware that any of them have run one. I'm actually pretty sure they haven't because one did a few years back and it showed up as an inquiry on my credit. Haven't had any more of that. I can see where the loans might affect it, although part of my job is analyzing credit and we ignore student loans. I think a lot of places do. I just recently passed a FBI and BCII background so I know there's nothing there.
Man, you should heavily consider assuming an alias for your channel, not airing out so many specific names on your channel and also not spending so much time investigating the ppl who either reject you or pass on you as an employee.
@@JackMonroe I’m not gonna waste the time to go back and watch a video from years ago but I don’t believe that I did those things. I think you’re taking what was said and turning it into something else entirely.

They don't want to be worried about being replaced and they don't want to pay people for what they are worth.

I may just do one specific to Columbus. Since it's not the usual content on my channel, it may attract some new people.

That may well be the case. I've had people tell me that before. It's just like, what do I do in the meantime?
