Ya man I have never seen a keyboard player like Rudess he is a genius! I think he went to Julliard at like 9 or something but it was pretty sick. Dream Theater is no question the best band ever!!!!
This is not great, but I would honestly take this level of singing over what he's able to do presently. At least you can tell it's singing here. His voice has completely given out on him at this point. It's so sad...
I very glad that someone think about how this song was made. Petrucci used a standar tuned guitar in order to play the unison solo at the original recording. But as you can see and hear he only plays the unison in the main song, not live. The song starts on D mayor with changes to A mayor pentatonic scale at the chorus and most part of the song are in A mayor scale(i supossed). The main note on the unison solo is D but he plays that solo on a standar tune guitar, that is E A D G B E. Have fun
also, there was his vocal accident from '94, and even though nowadays he is doing great singing with DT, some people (me included at times) think that he would have had a completely different sound with if he let his voice rest. that being said, I'm happy that he along with the rest of DT (past and present) are doing what they like and are making the best of what they're doing
They should have used the version of this song from the Chaos in Motion CD, Labrie sounds WAY better. And cut the guy some slack, guys. Every singer has shaky performances; I think it's really cool that DT displays themselves at their best and their worst, rather than trying to fix it all through editing and re-recording. And to be honest, he still sounds better here than most bands' singers do live.
man, when i listened the piano solo i almost move to tears because it is too perfect and beautiful, seriously i don't see the problem with the vocals they're good for me
o cara canta muito , infelizmente algumas pessoas so sabem criticar , nunca vi uma banda de tanta qualidade tecnica como o DT , e está entre as mais bem sucedidas bandas de metal progressivo dos ultimos anos
Good to see *SOME* people recognize the challenge of being a vocalist and not taking shots while sitting on their ass watching performances. LaBrie has an extremely tough role: Many keys/modes, (unlike countless rock/metal singers who sing in less than 3 keys), wide range of melodies, many parts that are high even for a tenor... And the melodies are generally written FOR HIM to sing.. And his vox are way on top of the mix and un-effected! Considering, he's pretty badass
I cannot figure out how Petrucci played this unison solo live. I am 99% sure he is using a 6 string baritone guitar with the tuning from low to high A,D,G,C,E,A.in this entire video. The unison guitar solo is typically played in standard 6 string tuning. Did he shift everything up a string? Anyone got an idea on how he pulled this off?
This is proof of the saying, "Anything that doesn't kill you, makes you stronger." LaBrie ruptured his vocal chords from puking up contaminated shrimp in 1994. The doctors said there was nothing they could do. Instead of throwing in a stellar career he went back on stage just two weeks after the incident, and fought his way back to be the powerhouse he is today.
Guys, make a point... he had a bad day! Maby he was sick or something. You can hear it in The first verse As a Singer in these situations you have no chance period.
@DylanEVH he probably got bored of noodling around on the drums at home all day, every day by himself. but i think that he really took Dream Theater for granted; he didn't know what he had until he lost it, so he wanted to rejoin. i guess we all have to learn that lesson some way and MP just needed the first hand experience to get it.
the truth is he has sung songs great rarely on live. And also sometimes we face terrible singing in album. You should consider the reason why from the fact.
Glad i got to see them in 1995, when he could sing. Now it's painful to see and listen to. I'm pretty sure they hear his shitty voice like we do, but I just don't think they want to replace him.
@chiborib0 It varies. Sometimes his singing is better than in the studio, and sometimes...it's like this. Check out Raise the Knife from the Score DVD, and Trial of Tears from Live in Budokan to see some of LaBrie's best live performances.
@redsledgehammer4085 I do think that it's just with how long they toured and how little sleep I assume they got compared to the number of shows probably didn't help him out.
@Deathz0r94 don't get me wrong, i love JLB, i saw DT live last summer or something and he was awesome. It doesn't seem like he tried during that live video though. You'd think he would if it was being filmed for a live dvd
This song reminds me of Porcupine Tree...the atmosphere, the drumming... one of my favorites of DT for sure. Not nearly as good as the album version though
Man, Jordan Rudess is soooo in tune with his music.. he becomes one with it.. hes truly amazing
Victoria Purdy total guru.
unlike james
one of their best songs
Ya man I have never seen a keyboard player like Rudess he is a genius! I think he went to Julliard at like 9 or something but it was pretty sick. Dream Theater is no question the best band ever!!!!
I don't care what anyone says I love Labrie in this !!
YOU ARE A FUCKING IDIOT
Andy Robison Hohokay buddy
LaBrie is awesome,i love him as well
This is not great, but I would honestly take this level of singing over what he's able to do presently. At least you can tell it's singing here. His voice has completely given out on him at this point. It's so sad...
The unison run starting at 8:19 is the greatest unison run Petrucci and Rudess have ever written.
6:20 that altered keyboard solo was nothing short of amazing and beautiful
i was at this show but didn't know this song at the time. was just getting into DT. damn...i blew my chance at enjoying this live :(
blind faith we yawyawyawyawyaw
i cant stop laughing loll
John Myung’s got such a punchy tone on that one I just love it. What I also love is when they play in unison with john that song is awesome :)
Rudess' solo brought me to tears. So did Labrie's off singing..
thats kinda funny no disrespect james
Agreed. He's been getting progressively better over the last few years. He sounded DAMN good on his solo album.
Hehe, just noticed that at 5:57 Jordan accidentally triggered a note on his Continuum... ;)
I very glad that someone think about how this song was made. Petrucci used a standar tuned guitar in order to play the unison solo at the original recording. The best part is when Jordan totally just interrupts the song with beautiful piano
also, there was his vocal accident from '94, and even though nowadays he is doing great singing with DT, some people (me included at times) think that he would have had a completely different sound with if he let his voice rest. that being said, I'm happy that he along with the rest of DT (past and present) are doing what they like and are making the best of what they're doing
Rudess's keyboard looks like the Starship Enterprise here!
The one thing I love more than anything about this video
The piano part.
Oh my god dude.
I was at this. Completely blown away.
i was at this exact show when i was ten!!!!

@rushsubdivisions it's a pleasure to support such a talented band! Sorry again for the misundrestanding! :)
This is so much better than the studio version in so many ways it's unbelievable
John Myung was really feeling this one.. finally!!
It seems he enjoys this more progressive style of DT more than the heavy sound.
The unison is DT's gift to the human ear!! Long live JP & JR
man, when i listened the piano solo i almost move to tears because it is too perfect and beautiful, seriously i don't see the problem with the vocals they're good for me
Thanks for putting all that information in the more info section. It shows dedication :)
Jordan Rudess is the MASTER OF MASTERS
God damn Jordan..
Dangerous riff, mr.Petrucci!
hmmm, i just realized that i was in this show. it was great show, and petrucci's tone that night was one of the best i've heard.
Most wonderful key/guitar unison in the world!
o cara canta muito , infelizmente algumas pessoas so sabem criticar , nunca vi uma banda de tanta qualidade tecnica como o DT , e está entre as mais bem sucedidas bandas de metal progressivo dos ultimos anos
both are amazing......cant compare
Holy crap what a great piano part Rudess did. I absolutely love the original one, but this one.. it's even better. Just...wow.
James sings fine here--it's the quality of the audio (and video) that brings this down.
Youre so right man, the piano solo is just so amazing! lovet it! and labrie is kick ass!
Amazing Unison
8:18 one of their great unision!!!🤘🏻
One of Dream Theater's best unisons, fucking insane.
Nice song! DT always amazing! \m/
chaos in pixels!

Vaiguy777 Hes God.
Apparently he plays it an octave lower than how he originally recorded it
@@MopsLife you mean higher.
Agreed saw him in Montreal in august, he was fucking insane.
amazing song
This is my favorite Dream Theater vocal chart...
This is proof of the saying, "Anything that doesn't kill you, makes you stronger."
LaBrie ruptured his vocal chords from puking up contaminated shrimp in 1994. The doctors said there was nothing they could do. Instead of throwing in a stellar career he went back on stage just two weeks after the incident, and fought his way back to be the powerhouse he is today.
exact same thing happen to me and my friend!!!
Sweet Jesus the paino solo in this kills
Thanks
wow genious!
the best song of DT
tararicio2000
Naaah, the best song of DT is "Lord Nafaryus"
well said
The mix is really off here I can hardly hear hear jp and mike is too loud
Guys, make a point...
he had a bad day! Maby he was sick or something. You can hear it in The first verse
As a Singer in these situations
you have no chance period.

que buena banda !!!!! por dios !!!!!!!
Totally agree. That's why you don't see 99% of professional players using guitars made with "exotic" or "rare" tonewoods. The basics work the best!
WE want a dream theater channel....
Awesome
perfection..hypergroup11
This song is proof that Jordan Rudess is a wizard.
great tune.....
def. ESP in Asbury New Jersey
video quality level: microwave
Alon Shlider Hahahaha, exactly and totally
john m's guitar look like an ameoba, and how jordan changed it with the solo keyboard bit was amazing.
why is James singing sometimes horrible and sometimes really good?
he is old... much older now... but old... even then.
the truth is he has sung songs great rarely on live.
And also sometimes we face terrible singing in album.
You should consider the reason why from the fact.
He suffered from food poisoning which greatly affect his voice
He sounded really good on short to medium setlist
jordan is the fucking MAN
PERFEITO!
Glad i got to see them in 1995, when he could sing. Now it's painful to see and listen to. I'm pretty sure they hear his shitty voice like we do, but I just don't think they want to replace him.
Greatest band ever. 2:52 lol
that is a fucking awesome keyboard
yeeee toronto
Oh man the vibrato
Como suena ese redoblante brutal.
i was at this show. fucking amazing.
If I could be LaBrie's vocal coach for a day I'd tell him to stop using Vibrato completely. NO vibrato at all. I think no one would miss it.
no his vibrato is awesome its partially what makes him him
@@ejRecording it was awesome.
Now his vibrato is pretty bad
@StylishStar88 usually i dont read the comments.... but this one caught my eye... and i couldnt agree more!!!
I just found out he lives in town here, gotta drive by the house and see if he's rich!
@catherineh83 plus he did a terrific job on the lines in the sand during the chaos in motion tour
"Cheesesticks"
0:38
I like it
@DestroyerGreat Exactly. Especially about the last sentence.
@chiborib0 It varies. Sometimes his singing is better than in the studio, and sometimes...it's like this. Check out Raise the Knife from the Score DVD, and Trial of Tears from Live in Budokan to see some of LaBrie's best live performances.
Ya, Dream Theater is BAD ASS!!! Thanks for the comment!
John Myungs annotation in the beginning lol
awesome piano solo...gonna try and figure out the chords and mess around with it :)
jordan is soo god maaaan.... nuff said
That keyboard setup looks like something out of Star Wars
@xxxxx6778 glad to see your supportive of dream theater tho!
damn I haven't listened to this track in years but the vocals sounded bit the first time around on the chorus
damn... rudess' solos fucking brilliant
3:54 and 9:05 - Why no backing vocals???
Labrie the best voice in the world , and Russel Allen ..
I really love this song , especially solo part of guiter, but I don't want listen this. what happend to them.
You'd think he would if it was being filmed for a live dvd
jordan mesed up
fucking hell this band was so close to perfection - la brie is just not up to scratch - his vocals are like a kid scratching a blackboard
Shut up with your hate 😐
This song reminds me of Porcupine Tree...the atmosphere, the drumming... one of my favorites of DT for sure. Not nearly as good as the album version though
