- In May 2010, Russian Marines from the Naval Infantry and serving onboard the Marshal Shaposhnikov destroyer were ordered to retake the MV Moscow University which had been seized by pirates 20 hours before. This is the story of that operation.

@@nikbrady14 I'm not convinced. If something happened then either one person made it back to tell the others or it was done where the others could see. If nobody was around to learn and spread the lesson they had learned then they'd still be attacking Russian ships.

We are all aware that the Russian destroyer lost them on radar after they used them as target practice for every weapons system on board.

Not seeing many comments commending the captain of the MV Moscow University: Yuri Tulchinsky who I feel saved his 23 strong crew during the hijacking due to his quick thinking and wit. He literally prevented any civilian casualties during this incident. Hats off to you mate.
The experiance of that crew was shared with another seafarers from all over Russia. The practice of lockdown in the steering compartment was called
"Citadel". There were designed some recomendations for modification of the doors and locks, the crews received exact instructions and methodics to be ready for such situations. The master was awarded by Order of Courage, other crew members were awarded by medals.

At 15:00 the pirates were released and sent on their way. At 16:00 there was a weapons test of the destroyer's 100mm cannon. At 16:10 the marines engaged in a humanitarian mission to feed the local sealife.

If you just shoot them up you're doing it at close quarters negating any possibility of denial, whereas an explosion ten or twelve miles away is tidy, effective, absolute and the evidence just sinks.

It's an tradition dating back to the Soviet-Afghan War, where soldiers would often disregard their jack boots or jump boots and use Chinese "Adidas" sneakers instead. They were a lot more useful in the mountains, apparently.

It's not only about being a weak or strong government. It's about being able to lose the facade of being "civilized" and being able to install panic and fear in the hearts of the enemy. Just when the pirates thought they're being smart by operating in an area free of legal jurisdiction. They learned the hard way that this also means nobody was going to investigate or prosecute if something - or someone - happens to them.

Except there was a legal jurisdiction. The merchant ship was Liberian-flagged, so it was in a strictly legalistic sense under Liberian jurisdiction, while in international waters.

The pirates could had been prosecuted in Liberia, since they had commited a crime under Liberian jurisdiction. The fact that they were not Liberians do not change that.
My favorite Somali pirate screw up was when they mistook the USS Ashland for a cargo ship because it was dark and fired at it. It did not end well for the pirates.

Regardless of one's circumstances you have no right or allowances to commit criminal behavior. Other innocent persons are negatively affected by piracy. There have been victims of this criminal priracy, some have been killed. So where is your sympathy for those victims?
If there is a claim of lack of fishing due to corporate fishing vessels depleting fish stock in these waters. Has anyone conducted any research as to current fish populations? I doubt it. The lucrative nature of piracy is immense compared to the back breaking labor of subsistence fishing. One capture of a ship brings in millions of dollars of ransom. These pirates had a choice. They chose a criminal lifestyle and the results were death. So cry me a river. I have no sympathy for these individuals.

I can just imagine the untold end of this story reads something like this: The Marshal Shaposhnikov Captain ordered all pirates, EXCEPT ONE, aboard a captured pirate skiff with a large explosive charge hidden & sent them on their way. The lone surviving pirate was made to initiate the remote detonator & watch his own friends turn into shark chum. The hapless Somali was then flown to a secluded Somalian beach & pushed out at 15m AG, just enough to break both his legs but live to tell.
It does not have to be a large bomb. You have seen the magnetic time bombs in old James Bond movies. One can create a big hole in their old skiff. That is a death sentence when you are hundred of kilometers from shore. And nobody will even notice. But they could have send care packages with letter of condolences to the families of the pirates in Somalia.

Accroding to several accounts when they made the movie 22 minutes (Russian film about this attack) the skipper of the Russian Destroyer Oleg Kistanov put all the crew in the skiff (which had removed of navigating aid and weapon at that point) and did not give the compass and other navigation aid back to the pirate when they were put back into the skiff, which the pirate was left to drift and well, eventually assumed they died at sea

Little trivia: that 30mm is GSh-6-30 (G like in "Ground", Sh like in "Shark"). It was developed and tested to be used in assault aircrafts, but turned out to be way too powerful for that. After it broke testing aircraft model by producing 5,5 tonns (12 000 pounds) of recoil and send shrapnell 200 meters into air in firing range tests, it was modified and installed on ships.

I heard it was the other way around, i.e. it was originally developed for warships as an AA weapon and then modified for use on aircraft, which couldn’t handle it no matter how much it or the aircraft was modified

That’s by far the best way to deal with chronic piracy. Rather than televising anti-piracy raids and arrests that then result in asylum claims and welfare for the rest of the clan brought in as immigrants to Europe, just sink the pirate vessels with their crews. Once piracy becomes a one-way trip to oblivion rather than wealth, it’ll soon become unattractive, and if the other pirates never know what happened to their colleagues, they won’t retaliate against the hostages they already hold.

Thank you LFE. I had never heard of this incident. When it was reported that the Russian government had chosen to release the pirates. I was surprised, and a bit suspicious. Had it been me, I would have let the pirates swim back to wherever they came from. But when it was reported that the pirates were never seen again. And then were given food, water, and fuel and sent back home without punishment? I am not really up to speed with modern maritime law. A real testament to the ruggedness of the AK that those fired at all.
Include the steel cased ammo to the rusted AK's. Although the cartridges are coated with laquer to stop rust. Once the metal cartridge box is opened you cannot reseal the box. It like opening a can of food. Once opened it's open forever. The salt water will corrode and oxidize the steel cartridges. The 7.62x39 AK cartridge has a tapered side, to add to the difficulty of being able to seat the cartridge into the chamber of the rifle with the salt water corrosion. It's surprising that the pirates could even shoot the AK's.
