  • WNEW 1130 New York - Gene Klavan - News Ray Rice - July 25 1973 - Radio Aircheck
    From the Kevin Fennessy Collection.
Gene Klavan was part of the 1130 WNEW morning show from 1952, until 1977. In the 1950s & 1960s, he hosted with his partner Dee Finch. Klavan & Finch were wildly popular. They improvised the popular four-hour program, which featured wacky characters like Mrs. Wes Chester, Sy Kology, Trevor Traffic, Mr Nat and Victor Verse. After Dee Finch retired, Klavan hosted the show alone, from 1968, until 1977. This aircheck is from the final years of the Gene Klavan Program, before the show left WNEW, and moved to 710 WOR where Gene hosted afternoons, to compliment WOR’s longtime morning show, Rambling with Gambling.
Feel free to check out some of the many other videos on the Ellis B Feaster's Radio Channel! Established in 2008! One of You Tube's oldest RADIO AIRCHECK MUSEUM with a NEW VIDEO posted daily at 3PM EST.
After over 40 years working on the radio, I have recorded lots of radio airchecks, and many from my friends as well. You'll find audio of many radio personalities who have passed away. Lots radio recordings from the 1940s, through the 2010.
We also talk about radio broadcasting. If you happen to have classic airchecks, maybe even of yourself on the air, we'd love to share it here! If you are on the radio, or do voiceovers for You Tube videos, I have tips to make your radio show or video voiceovers better!
In addition to sharing audio from my 40 years in broadcasting, we also share videos about Travel & Cruising. I share tips on how I travel cheaply, so you can do it also!

Thank you very very much for posting this air track. There are not a lot of air checks of radio station WNEWAM out there and this is great. I hope that you’ll be able to find an air check of Cleavon and finch eventually. Those are even more rare again thank you very very much for posting this. Brings back memories of my childhood when my parents used to listen to this radio station and I was not allowed to even touch the radio dial.❤

I remember this station like it was yesterday! My father loved 1130 WNEW. Loved the cast of "characters!" That for the memories Ellis.

Banks: Manufacturer's Hanover was taken over by Chemical Bank. Then Chemical Bank was taken over by Citibank (Citicorp). Then Citicorp became bankrupt, but still operates. Dog eat dog in banking.

I always wonder how people are able to find these kind of old broadcasts.

I recorded a lot of them myself when I was a kid, and many others have been passed along to me by others who recorded them when they were kids or teenagers.

When did WNEW AM start playing American Popular Standards, in stead of this lineup?

I'm a little fuzzy on this, but I think it was around 1982-ish.

1982 is a about right. Jack Thayer was running WNEW and moved it back to its former format on standards, vocalists, lots of Sinatra, Fitzgerald, Bennett, etc. From the mid 1930’s to the early1950’s WNEW was synonymous with big bands, swing and vocalists. Bernice Judis, one of the few radio station managers who started there in the late 2930’s (lovingly nicknamed ‘La Mama’ by the air staff) nurtured the format and later was co-owner. She brought together Dee Finch and Gene Rayburn as a comedy morning team. Later Gene Klavan replaced Rayburn when he started becoming successful in television as the Steve Allen Tonight Show announcer and comic foil. Judis was a true programming innovator.
WNEW’s format in the 1950’s to early 1970’s was close to the later AmericanStandards format in the 1980’s until it’s demise. But back in the 50’s/60’s they would air hour long specials with artists singing live in their studios such as Tony Bennett, Lena Horne and others and occasionally live remote specials aside from their great lineup of jocks. WNEW was one of the few all-night radio stations in the 50’s/early60’s and I listened to ‘The Milkman’s Matinee on my transistor radio.
In the late 1950’s WNEW flirted with rock n’ roll adding doo-wop records to their playlist. I remember the first time I heard ‘Get A Job’ by The Silhouettes was on WNEW around 1958 (my dad had WNEW playing on a loudspeaker in his business for a couple of decades). Rock didn’t last long.
In 1971 many of the jocks were gone including Ted Brown. Children’s TV host Sandy Becker became a jock, so did singer Jim Lowe. The station’s ratings had eroded by then (in the 40’s/50’s it was a top rated station - a real forerunner to WABC) and began adding pop tunes and MOR songs. That format never jelled. Klavan left for WOR afternoons around 1977 or so after Bob and Ray left there.
I hope Ellis doesn’t mind this, Google - The Melody Lingers On book World Radio History - it will take you to a PDF copy of the long out of print book ‘The Melody Lingers On’ a 50th anniversary book about WNEW that will give you a great history of the station from its beginning until it’s move to standards. An interesting great read with lots of pictures, and station artifacts.
