I couldn’t disagree more ...... I had a 2016 ND GT that I traded for a 2017 RF GT and other than it being slightly more rigid than the soft top with the roof in closed position (but the exact same with top down) the soft top has much better wind management (the RF with the roof off is deafening past 70MPH), it’s 100lbs heavier, roof takes like 15 seconds and can’t be lowered or raised unless the car is basically stopped versus the 1 second up and down of the soft top, and most importantly when the roof is open on the RF it feels like completely different experience than the soft top (ST feels like a true convertible with full open air experience while the RF feels more like just a Targa) I hav since gone back to a soft top ND2 Miata and am glad to be back in the soft top
@@jameswillard1 I have a 2020 RF and my initial impressions were the same. However, I saw a forum post recommending removing the wind deflector and that made a huge difference. I wouldn't say it makes it exactly as quiet as the soft top on the highway, but it was a huge improvement.

Your videos reveal a hidden side of many cars-how they operate on a daily basis. You always hear about taking an MX-5 on some windy back road, but what about sitting on the highway as you do in America?
This is my dream car. I already watched almost all mx-5 reviews here in UA-cam even with non English reviews. Just can't get enough of Miata. But have to say, your hands on review is the best! And I think you were the only one who demo played the audio system. This made my day! Thanks! Oh I also love your Audi RS3 review as well!
I recently test drove one of the Club models w/the Brembo/BBS/Recaro pkg. and it was most enjoyable to say the least. I also own a 2017 Camaro SS in the base 1SS version. It has a 6 spd manual. It's a joy to drive but I really have trouble wringing all of the performance out of it here in SE L.A. County. As I've come to understand: it's more fun to drive a slow car fast than drive a fast car slow.... The new Miata is a really fun car to drive that fits the earlier part of the last sentence. My Camaro would blow it off the road but so what?? The point is often just plain moot. Dammit... I dig the Miata! Two thumbs up!! 👍👍
Thanks for these excellent MX-5 reviews. Went out to test drive the 2.0L version and it is now on order. The gearbox is so slick and the car feels fast with the upgraded engine it just revs for days!

I heard you say you're getting older, and are more sensitive to the noise and bumps. Well, you're in the Club, with the rag top. I'm 63. and just got the 2020 Grand Touring RF. A bit quieter, a bit softer, and still a ton of fun!
Yes, depends on how you use the car. For a weekend toy the soft top club ND2 is perfect, as an only car and for longer daily drives the GT RF is probably a better choice.
I drove my '96 Miata from Toronto, Canada to Orange County, California. It has good, original, supportive seats and it was comfortable. I haven't driven the latest gen, but would think that it would be just as comfortable.

This is a brilliant video, captures the essence of this car perfectly. I bought this EXACT spec (color and all) last May and use it as my daily. I’m 6’5” and I make myself fit because the drive to and from work has just enough fun segments to have me arrive smiling. And it IS an awesome track toy!

Makes me really miss my na miata. Owned 2 of them. One with the 1.6 and one with the 1.8. Tapping that lights up button to blink at fellow miata drivers was always answered with a wave. I really miss the fact that every drive was fun with those cars. Everything from cross country road trips to driving back to the grocery store because you “forgot” the milk. Also loved how putting on the hard top made it feel like a totally different car. Felt quieter stiffer warmer (depending on the time of year). With a set of blizzacks they are amazing fun to drive in snow. Drove mine through Canadian winters with no issues. Biggest challenge in winter was not destroying my rear tires drifting all the time.
Back in December I ordered a 2020 Snowflake White soft top Club w/BBS Brembo Recaro option in a 6spd from my dealership. Literally THE EXACT spec’d car as in this clip. Unfortunately, It was bad timing. Covid happened, the dealership shut down, economy started tanking, oil crashed, and the car was ultimately held at port after it arrived in April. So I cancelled my order but left my deposit in hopes that I would be back to reorder it after everything settled a bit. I am currently selling & buying a house but am expecting to soon place another order. Can’t wait.
Not just the 2019 engine was a massive improvement but the telescoping steering wheel! It’s a small thing but it makes a big difference. I miss my 2018, even without these changes, but plan to buy a new one as soon as I can. I would be happy with the base model but I’d miss heated seats and probably the limited slip differential. I’m still considering the RF for my next one.
You're the first reviewer who turned on the stereo. I enjoyed the POV, seeing someone else's city is always enjoyable. Where did you record this? It looks like a prairie region to me.
It's wimpy indeed. I've had SUV's try to change into my lane on the highway and they can't hear me when I start blasting the horn and still continue to encroach into my lane. It definitely could be louder or more attention getting than it is.
Not sure if I'll hop on the Miata train again, but I did have lots of fun in my old 2002 MX5... and this latest version is very tempting - It seems to fix all the complaints I had about the old cars.
I purchased a 2019 Club with Brembo/BBS. While it is more bouncy than I’d like, it doesn’t look like it’s anywhere near as bouncy as your 2020. Did Mazda update the spring rates over ‘19 or could the tires be overinflated (recommended psi is only 29)?
I find it amazing; a Japanese company would actually replicate the car I loved many years ago. Not only have they replicated a true British sportscar but did a reincarnation job with the perfection of allowing the owners to witness the feel of what the '64 Jaguar XKE felt like. The only think I've done to my new 2023 and 4th MX-5, was to install a Goodwin RoadsterSport Race muffler. It's actually a straight pipe with a resonate 120~130 Hz sound reduction chamber, perpendicularly attached to the exhaust pipe.
Enjoyed the video as usual. Love the Miata, but when I was shopping for a roadster in 2014, I tested the Mini Roadster along with the MX-5 and preferred the Mini... turbo, personality, power cloth top... identical HP as Miata... But the Mini Roadster went away after 2015. Great car! Still glad the Miata is around.
Great review as usual! I’ve owned a 2021’ MX-5 Club w/ brembo/ bbs / recaro package for 5 months now and couldn’t be happier :) The first car I’ve driven that I prefer over the late Honda S2000 AP2 and that says A LOT as far as I’m concerned. I eventually plan to get some road / track Ohlins installed and perhaps stiffer sway bars (Progress probably) but that’s it as the car is nearly perfect as is.
I've had 2 s2000s both AP1 and AP2 and I test drove one of these bad boys with the RF roof and an aftermarket short shifter, I got to say, it feels very similar if not better than both my s2000s, miss those two cars, definitely buying an ND2 Miata!
If you plan the keep the top down most of the time, or if you plan on tracking it, get the ST. If you plan on having the top up a lot, or want a LITTLE reduction in wind noise, get the RF.
I have been daily driving one with some stiffer coil overs and sticker tires and a tune and it is the most fun I have ever had with a car every drive can be fun
Was pumped to see the ND finally with CarPlay. Been looking for a clean non-riced low milage NA but those don't exist anymore unless it is priced way too high meaning the $14K range in my area. Want to pay off my truck first before getting a Club or GT so perhaps in 2-3 years!
I test drove both and had to choose between this and a Mazda6 in the showroom...20-year old me wanted this and 30-year old me wanted the Mazda6. My 30 year old self won out in the end since I just couldn't justify this as a daily commuter... 1 year later, I'm saving up to get one used as a weekend car! Just couldn't forget that shifter, it's outstanding! So smooth and satisfying with the short throws and the clutch engagement is just right! :D
The Mazda 6 is absolutely stunning in its class. The amount car you get for the price is absolutely unbelievable. If only they resurrected the Mazdaspeed 6 with the AWD platform coming back...
@@henlolneh For sure! Sales have been slow for the 6 and I grabbed a leftover Signature trim for around 8k off MSRP! 29k out the door was a steal! And best of all, no fake vents and fake exhausts hahaha
About the suspension comparison, all RFs actually have stiffer rear springs compared to the equivalent ST. Makes sense when you consider where the weight went and that they have to keep the something of with the same spring length at the same ride height.
I disagree about sticky tires and the stock bilstein suspension. I put RE71s on mine, and the car actually became scary under hard braking at the track even when pointed straight. There was so much grip from the tires, the front end dove, rear got light and the car became SUPER squirrelly. I had to struggle to keep the car pointing forward even when braking in a straight line.
My dream car. Who knows Mazda will continue with the NA platform for the foreseeable future. In the meantime I am grateful to be driving my mt civic sport hatch.
In my opinion the most suitable trackday car is an mx-5, if you are wondering let me explain. When all other cars rely on engine power, the mx-5 only relies on its road holding
2009 Honda S2000 base model MSRP in 09': $34,995. With inflation, that's roughly ~$40k in 2020 dollars. I drive a Mazdaspeed 3. Grew up in a Mazda 323. I am a Mazda f'n fan boy. But my god, we need some competition in this market for Mazda from Honda or Toyota. It is mind boggling to me that a decently spec'd Miata is almost the same price as what a brand new S2000 would have cost. Again, love my Mazdas, but I'm taking a S2000 over a Miata 11 times out of 10.
The Miata was made to replicate British sports cars of the past. You weren't around back then. I was. I owned 2 MGB's. The Miata, or MX-5 is quieter than either of those MGB's. History unstudied tends to repeat, and in this case, I love the repetition.
I actually think I’m going to trade my 2019 civic si for this. Really have to give it some thought since I have a kid, but that’s what we have a corolla for... this looks like a way better/refined version of the brz to me. This seems like the raw experience I want and miss from older cars.
I just bought one of these as my first manual car. I’m loving it. But I always feel like my shift from 1st to 2nd is a bit jerky/lurchy. Any tips on when to shift or clutch control?
Most people would dream to own Ferraris and Lamborghinis although they don’t realize that they are very expensive to maintain unlike the Miata, it would be my dream car to start out with especially the Mk4 other than the previous generations because the performance is up a notch and is capable of competing with other smaller sports cars like the Honda S2000, Subaru BRZ, and the Toyota GR86. It’s definitely a great choice for me because I want pure fun than spending a horrendous fortune on something exclusive and expensive that doesn’t make it truly fun without breaking the bank.
as a ND1 owner, i'm curious how the ND2 engine compares to a ND1 with a tune? seems like a $500 tune might be a better deal than a $8000 loss in depreciation.
Hell, my MGB's back in the '60's were the same, so what is it that people don't get when driving a real sportscar? They've always been rough riding, noisy, but what a hell of a lot of fun driving them. Same went for the Austin Healey's, TR3's, etc.

@@TheKittenGamer You won’t be disappointed with the ND2, it’s pure driving bliss!
i like how you pick out the leaves. its not your car but you take good care of it.
So excited to buy one!! This car is my motivation to finish my degree and training.
Nice video! I've been thinking which one to get: soft top or the rf... What do you think I should get?
If you plan the keep the top down most of the time, or if you plan on tracking it, get the ST. If you plan on having the top up a lot, or want a LITTLE reduction in wind noise, get the RF.
I have been daily driving one with some stiffer coil overs and sticker tires and a tune and it is the most fun I have ever had with a car every drive can be fun
Miata is still the freakin answer.
Absolutely love Mazda MX-5 Miatas ❤🔥❤🔥❤.
Being 6’5” tall, there are many great cars I’ll never be able to own, and this is one of them...😢. Great vid!
You’d fit great in a BRZ!
The drop top is the most genius manual mode
I own one and agree. Probably the best sports car manual top ever.
That’s the way to do it...get both! 😆
@@Magnetorheological Dude. 29k OTD for a signature is INSANE!
I thought the same thing between MX-5 and a manual Mazda 3. The clutch/gearbox in the MX-5 was FAR nicer (so that's what I bought)
Watching this reminds me how much I miss my ND Miata.
My 2021 mx5 club is being delivered in the morning, can't wait!
Matching paint on the interior is one of my favourite things
This vid just made me start putting money in the bank cause I want one
About the suspension comparison, all RFs actually have stiffer rear springs compared to the equivalent ST. Makes sense when you consider where the weight went and that they have to keep the something of with the same spring length at the same ride height.
*open the hood*

yep, sounds like a Miata lol
loved the video! any idea when you will be getting your hands on the new Mazda 3 Turbo? Can't wait to see how it performs.
I like this reviewer - straight to the point with no waffle!
🧇 🙌
Really like these, I've seen two in 3 years, dealers can't get them, and none exist.. But man it's a cool sports car..
Oh god that's my favourite car ever!!!
I love it
You always do an excellent job with your videos.
Your voice and presentation style is the most Patrick Bateman thing I've ever heard. If you don't know what I mean, look it up.
Can't wait to see how they incorporate their new design language into the NE
Surely that's another 5 years away? Long wait!
God I want one of these sooooooooooo bad
Hi Topher, i was watching the rpm, were you blipping the rpm with your foot when you downshift or does it have a rev matching feature now for 2020?
blip
I love watching your videos because I like to imagine that I’m driving them. Sad I’ll never get a decent car. But thank you for posting your vids
Damn, that looks so satysfing to drive, i miss driving manual!!!
The Miata was made to replicate British sports cars of the past. You weren't around back then. I was. I owned 2 MGB's. The Miata, or MX-5 is quieter than either of those MGB's. History unstudied tends to repeat, and in this case, I love the repetition.
Will u get a newer cx3 topher? I have a 2018 and am curious if anything has improved for 2020 or 2021. Thanks!
hi, what about performane and fuel economy is 1.5 BETTER OR 2.0L?
i leased a 2019 RF. it was amazing! loved everything about it. i kept up with a porsche on the highway
Having owned the BRZ for a while now, would you still want to get an ND2? :)
I actually think I’m going to trade my 2019 civic si for this. Really have to give it some thought since I have a kid, but that’s what we have a corolla for... this looks like a way better/refined version of the brz to me. This seems like the raw experience I want and miss from older cars.
It is that raw experience from older cars. (Owner of an mx5)
@@WizardTerence it’s not as raw as older cars, but it’s raw compared to everything else in the market.
Even the Mazda 3 is like older cars. I've never driven a car that felt so good
@@matthewgonano636 Drive an S2000. That thing is insanely good.
Always low keyed liked these very small practical and just looks like tons of fun I bet that 180 hp feels like a rocket with the power to weight
The only thing this car needs to be perfect is a digital speedo in place of the gear suggestion.
The best review that I ever seen
as a ND1 owner, i'm curious how the ND2 engine compares to a ND1 with a tune? seems like a $500 tune might be a better deal than a $8000 loss in depreciation.
a tune doesn't change the cylinder head. It's not a fair comparison.
Hell, my MGB's back in the '60's were the same, so what is it that people don't get when driving a real sportscar? They've always been rough riding, noisy, but what a hell of a lot of fun driving them. Same went for the Austin Healey's, TR3's, etc.
Nice review! Is it a car with many technical issues? How are the costs of ownerships?
