Alaska Elk: An Elk101 Film Premiere

  • The first successful translocation of elk into Alaska involved eight Roosevelt elk calves that were captured on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington in 1928 and moved to Alaska the next year. Another successful transplant occurred in 1987, when 33 Roosevelt elk and 17 Rocky Mountain elk were captured in Oregon and moved to Southeast Alaska. These elk have dispersed and established breeding populations on several islands, and limited hunting opportunities are now available through a draw process.
    Steep terrain, thick timber and harsh weather make Alaska elk a difficult and challenging pursuit. Add in the challenge of packing these giant-bodied elk from remote kill sites, along with the presence of brown bears and wolves, and hunting elk in Alaska is not for the faint of heart.
    Elk101's Corey Jacobsen, Donnie Drake, and John Abernathey headed to Alaska in the fall of 2021, and experienced firsthand the majestic beauty - and the epic struggle - of hunting elk in such an intense landscape.
    Depending on the season, the weather, and the several other factors, harvest as low as a single elk out of over 150 tags has been recorded, and the average success on some of these Alaska elk hunts is just 1-2 %.
    A huge thank you is owed to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, along with the many other agencies and organizations who had the vision to bring a majestic, wild animal to such a majestic, wild landscape. And big thank you to the Tongass National Forest for allowing us to film this incredible adventure and share it with you.

    This is by far the most phenomenal hunting adventure ever captured on film. Alaska is beautifully brutal.

    I am so glad you made this film. We were dropped at that same lake a week later for our second rifle hunt there and its hard to explain to others. The snow was deep on the ridges by the time we arrived and our pilot told us about your adventure and misery. He also told us of a group at the same time as you who abandon their gear and hiked to salt for an early pick up. For those contemplating this hunt make sure you have a complete second set of gear and shelter every time you leave camp. We often joked once a mile or so out of camp about what the hell we would do if we put one down. There is not one square inch of flat ground there. This was our second year in a row and we have not seen an elk there. By the way one of the last and best pilots, the one who picked you up, will no longer fly into that lake.

    • @tjallen3967
      @tjallen3967 2 роки тому

      Why will the pilot not fly into that lake?

    • @mikecowan3222
      @mikecowan3222 2 роки тому +6

      @@tjallen3967 Its just too dangerous. He flew me out with gear and dropped me at the saltwater and went back up to get the other two and gear. I am a low time Cessna driver and there was zero room for error. We flew directly at the mountain and banked losing altitude before heading towards the lake outlet. You can not fly directly at the outlet and clear the trees. I am not sure if this makes sense. Into the lake is relatively easy but getting out is a different story.

    I think, for first timers who want to take up this hobby, should undergo a fitness test in my opinion and I'm glad to know, you all made it out alive. It's one of the best movie for animal lovers to watch.
    I reckon, I'd rather hunt for rabbits instead- at least, they're not a heavy load to carry for a few in the pot. Thank you for going through extreme lengths to make it all possible turning it into another geographical wild life adventure!

      Howmany of you outside Alaska realize Roosevelt elk is the only animal up here not native to Alaska??? They were introduced from Washington state only to etolin island just south of Wrangell and afognak and raspberry islands just outside of Kodiak island.

    It has been years for me in making comments but you guys are great. Love the hard work and good living. I have hunted Elk on Etolin in Alaska, I live here in S.E. Alaska. I have been to the lake you flied into. Tough place if your not use to it. Good rubber rain gear is a must. When hunting lower ground, breathable waders is what we hunt in. Good high top, water proof boots is a must. I like the airbob soles for the wet glass and moss. The light weight traps are also a good thing to have. If it is warm enough you may find us in just light long underwear under our rain gear. Easy to move in. You are right, this is not your normal place to hunt, no roads, very few people and help is hours or a day away. I always carry a VHF radio here. Very nice Bull. Glad it did not cost you guys much more pain then it did.

    In the mid-70s when I lived in Alaska, the thought of hunting elk had real appeal. After watching this video, I think its better that I spent my time with sheep, caribou, bears and moose; none required a pack out like you accomplished. You definitely set the bar high on the 'hard' scale and thanks for showing what's possible if conditioning and motivation are both at the very top. Wow, what an adventure and accomplishment. Congrats to you all.

    After a life time of such hunts in Alaska, am always thrilled to go hunt the National forests of Montana and Idaho (dry trails, dust and relatively easy walking). This video really captures the wetness of Alaska, from the beach to mountain tops it is a swampy, soaking place. most of the battle is staying dry or getting dry. Great video.

    After living in Alaska for nine years, I have seen some of the most challenging weather conditions that nature can throw at you. Add to this the challenges of hunting in such steep, wet, wild country and it is truly an epic adventure of grand proportions that one can only truly appreciate if you have experienced it. This film was as you as you can make it. It was a win just surviving such challenging and frustrating conditions. To have the opportunity to harvest an elk was simply a bonus. Great film guys and thank you so much for sharing!! Most likely a once in a lifetime adventure and rightly so.

    It's satisfying to see the contribution our elk transplant in 1987 has made to sport hunting opportunities in SE Alaska. In 1987, I was the Wildlife and Fisheries Program Manager on the Tongass NF in Ketchikan when this cooperative transplant effort took place. One of our biologists, Duane Fisher, provided most of the liaison with Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife, to trap and transport the elk to Etolin Island, where they were released. Given the opposition to the project by many biologists in Alaska, and to the failure of prior elk transplants there, due primarily to poaching, we were not overly optimistic that the 1987 transplant would be successful. Apparently, it has succeeded, with 150 hunt permits being issued annually. Any feedback you wish to share concerning this established elk population in SE Alaska would be appreciated. ............. Lol the look on Donnie’s face when Corey said it has to be today. You two are top notch for hanging with Corey all over those mountains.

    I’ve never sat down and watched a video of that length in one setting. As good as any movie I’ve seen. You all are awesomely amazing. You guys keep it real. Appreciate all you bring us. John… you’re a stud too bud! I’m glad I can live vicariously through you all, cause it’s certainly not on my bucket list! Lol.
    Donnie, love the waving hawk:)
    Amazing stuff! Thank you guys! Probably my favorite hunting video to date!
    You all are, again, a class act!

    Great video. Showed how truly rugged the terrain is there. Everything in Alaska is BIG !! Animals, terrain, country. Just enormous. Moose there make that bull elk look small. Good job guys.

    I know how hard elk hunting can be and the difficulty of the terrain you have to get into and what I've experienced is about 1/100 of what you all had to endure on this trip. The scenery and the moments you shared were breathtaking. From the bull standing in that plateau with the mountains in the backdrop to the scene that had such a majestic backdrop where you were field dressing your harvest and not to mention such a great archery shot AND TO GET IT ALL ON VIDEO !!!!!! Can't even begin to imagine packing that bull out of such steep terrain and through the wind and rain completely proves that determination, drive and passion you all have for hunting. From following along all your other hunts I had such a tremendous amount of respect for you all, but after seeing this hunt my respect and admiration of you 3 just grew 100% more! Thank you for sharing this adventure and wish you much continued success in all your future adventures !!

    Watching this hunting trip, I just can't shake the notion of all those who came before us, when man first set foot in this absolutely breathtaking and unspoiled territory . . . .
    This video is _definitely_ among what makes the Y.T.-platform such a valuable thing, and thanks a _heap_ to you guys for making this trip and sharing these glimpses of it with the rest of us! . . . Cheers from 🇳🇴👍

    Sorry to see you so sick Donnie, I had similar, but not up in the woods. I feel for you. Took almost 2 weeks to finally get to where I wasn't uncomfortable anymore. Loved the cheesy gift candle joke!

    What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. John is under paid and priceless. Donney get better. Maybe in my 30s and 40s. Too old and worn out now. What a grind! One bad ass crew!

    Corey's words, "I've heard it said, to those who feel, life is a tragedy. To those who think, a comedy."
    The brilliance and bizarreness of those words in that moment had me in complete hysteria. 😂

    This was indeed an “Epic” adventure. A challenge not only for the body but also the mind. No matter how we train our bodies if we can’t as Donnie put it. “Keep our mind right”. We’ll probably fail. Congratulations again, and thank you. I have to live vicariously through you guys.
