Have an open mind and approach to tramping as never one day to the next is the same and long 13 - 15 hour days. But if you like the money, then is ok. You’ll also need to accept the fact you want be home much through the week
Great video buddy glad to hear you are getting on well keep at it. I passed my class 1 test on the 8th of december 2023, the only thing i struggled with was getting work i eventually got the company i work for to give me an opportunity but i didnt get that chance for nearly 4 months. I found that when it comes to looking for work and you have only just passed appky for the job even if they say they require experience so.e one out there will give you chance to get your foot in the door. Also just take what you can get.
Great video Billy !! Im same been driving class 1 for nearly 2 years now. I started on nights as you have but difference is I still do nights as I wanted to get my driving skills perfected plus I didn't want to hop from one employer to another. I hate nights but it is what it is for time being. I believe this industry isn't for everyone. Getting my licence was the best thing I've done. You have to be independent and you have to like to be on your own.
Great video. I did novice to class 1 with mainstream too. Have had opposite experience with their recruitment arm. No sense of urgency, understanding that you need to work and earn. Mainstreams training was first class however. It took a while but got my class one start on nights. First week under my belt. Onwards and upwards. Negativity everywhere but just keep on trucking!
Thanks for sharing! There is a lot of negativity around the industry but it’s really what you make of it at times I feel. Keep trucking and keep your head low. 👍
Great video Billy, as you know I just recently passed my 3A, got my test on the 12th at Thurrock, with regards to jobs for new passes, there are jobs out there, you just have to put the effort in to look, I know that once I pass I will be out there looking all the time
Hey good luck matey I passed my class 1 at Thurock end of February not a bad area to take your test, have not tried looking for work yet as I wont beat my existing job did it for the experience always wanted to do it but good luck on your journey

Thank you Billy. Interesting insights, I was wondering how the family copes with you being away all week. And then I thought that maybe they were used to it with you being a former serviceman.
Hi Roy, my family are used to it, however you can’t get away from the reality of the role and the tramping lifestyle. I enjoy the job but it has its pitfalls just like most jobs 👍
Hi Billy another great video, you were more than helpful to me and was so much appreciated pure Gold my friend top man as you know i left because of family reasons but your so right on many things, i wished i had a better start but wasn't to be, it will change and i will make the most of it when it happens. @@billyhgvuk thanks Billy my dad is still hanging on, no idea how, but he has more lives than a cat and been in and out of hospital for a few months now. Hope he makes his next birthday 🎂🎂
Hi Billy i think you are lucky to have got a job class 1 straight from passing i think it may have got harder with so many more people having completed bootcamp and think it depends on your area from as more industrial areas more opportunities ,i could of got a job straight away in Sittingbourne where trained and passed with Mainstream but out of my area for day work . Agree you quickly get experience tramping ,did send my cv to George Baker few weeks ago now but not heard back as yet .
Hi Billy, i am studying with mainstream at the moment just passed medical. How difficuly did you find the cpc case studies and what did you find was the beat way to learn them Cheers
I just studied buddy and I found it easy. Just follow the questions, read them slowly and it will all come together. The training you do will make it allot easier for you on the day 👍
Yes I do! But I also spend my time editing videos. Hoping to get myself a decent Laptop soon with a quick processors to speed things up 👍 you to buddy!
i have c licence, i'd happy to do tramping... it's a lonely job but honestly, i'd rather work alone, in fact i'd love to work alone for hours than with fuckface coworkers i really hate and being micromanaged all the bloody time. i hate working with people.
I found the studying easy and the reversing and couple uncouple also not a problem, But the driving is difficult straight from car to class 1 the training only teaches you to pass a test not how to drive or think for yourself. I’m having lessons now- expensive but I want to learn to drive class 1 not just pass a test. I will pass the driving one day😂😅
I passed my car to class 1 a couple of weeks ago, the theory isn't hard...cpc case studies is a bit more tricky but not that hard aslong as you remember what you learn in the theory. Car to class 1 is a big task but its not impossible, you just have to be able to apply what your instructor is telling you in a short amount of time I'd say a big part of it is confidence too. I passed 2nd time with 3 minors because I made a stupid mistake in the 1st test. I used wallace school of transport, they're very expensive but brilliant and they teach you beyond the test. Don't be put off by people telling you not to do it, if class 1 is your goal just go for it and if if it means you have to drive a class 2 for while it is what it is but you'll have your class 1. good luck!
I failed my test I went over a kerb stone on a roundabout I have driven on once. And I failed to mirror check a workman behind a plastic barrier. The kerb was lack of experience not being able to approach a junction and judge what to do - I couldn’t remember what the instructor had told me and got it wrong hence wanting to learn to drive not just pass a test.
@@TruckerJane ah that sucks, it happens though because it's a hell of a lot to take in within a 1 or 2 week course all things considered. But a junction is what I failed on too, I blocked the oncoming traffic haha...I have no idea why I did it because I knew not to do it but it I was a bag of nerves in the first test. But the truth is you don't really start learning until you're out on the road alone anyway...its the same for a car etc. Fortunately for me during my training I went through every possible route the examiners take you on. but I did a 2 week course so I had loads of time
It's unskilled work. Anyone can drive. Simple. It's a decent wage for the input required. Check out a nursing degree. it's a markey economy, so you get paid according to the market . Comparing this to an airline pilot is utter stupidity. Forget an ATPL, try and get your PPL and then reassess that idea. Do something else if you don't like it, or reduce spending at home etc. Of course your social life is over driving those lorries, which is an awful way to live, but this is the choice of the lorry driver. Do something else.
Watch the video again…. I’m not saying the job isn’t for me. I’m making observations based on my experiences, so yes we could compare to many professions etc. Anyone can get a license but the reality kicks in with people once they start doing the Job. The role of a HGV is critical to the country and that’s my point. Under valued and under paid, simple! Enjoy your weekend fella 👍
@@billyhgvuk everyone is underpaid...it's a market economy- that means you get paid what the employer thinks you're worth- no more, no less. Many jobs are critical to the country- nurse, teacher, gardener, window cleaner, tesco check out- there is no special place for anyone- not even HGV drivers.

A lot of problems mentioned are symptoms of a larger problem, the degradation of the country and society as a whole.
I though AW Jenkinson required a years experience, I got one locally in Penrith and I’m currently looking for class 1 work

Also how do you do more hours when your on taco e.g 15 hour days etc
Legally - you cannot exceed 15 hours per day 3 times a week so if you do, you will receive an infringement. So be aware of that!
