Hope you dig the Space Charged pedal from Crazy Tube Circuits! There are some photos of the inside of this thing in the video, it's pretty wild! Let me know what you think. Links are in the description :-).
@@ErebosGR Of course it would, just not as much as @ 300V! A valve will still work, (obviously) with plate starvation, but nowhere near as efficiently. It would have much LESS headroom, so would clip more easily than @ full power.
Thanks, mate. I've said it for years. I think some of the best pedals are coming out of Greece and the EU. They seem to nail the tone and user-experience better than almost anyone else.
While I agree with your sentiment, think of a pedal builder sending a pedal to a popular youtube channel as marketing, exposure, and free advertising. Shane is a great guitar player and impartial judge. He'll be fair and honest in his assessment, as well as being full disclosure, which he did with the Keisel guitar. A pedal review on this channel is a win-win for everyone involved.
I don’t think it was sent From Greece like Odysseus? I’m bet they probably just mailed it? I wish it went on a journey battling Minotaurs and the like, Arriving ten years later. And the battery still worked, and it had an extra dirty sound. Just being stupid, you are correct Fatt Philosopher.
You should be demo’ing this going into a solid state amp vs. a tube amp with your favorite solid state overdrive pedal. To see if you can use a solid state and have it be passable against tube amps.
The maximum plate voltage of a 12AX7 is around 330 volts. However, I think this type of pedal goes the other way and actually starves the plate of voltage, disrupting the flow of electrons and ultimately creating distortion. Pretty clever stuff.
Even the price isn't that bad - ~235€ here in Germany. Definitely more expensive than the average drive pedal but a lot more affordable than any Kingsley pedals (and easier to get too) which I have been keeping an eye on for years now. Any ideas about the current draw at 9 volts?
@@error8418 Thank you for the kind words!! Current consumption is approx 430ma at 9V DC. The pedal comes with its own power supply but you can use any high current (500ma or more) 9V DC center negative power supply to power it up.
@@CrazyTubeCircuits Thanks for the quick answer! Good to know. I was just wondering whether my existing power supply would be capable enough and couldn't find any figures on your website.
I have a Radial Tonebone Hot British pedal with a 12ax7 tube inside. Its very versatile and has awesome tones! The pedal runs on 15 Volts DC. Try one if you can get your hands on the one with a tube inside.
I have a Space Charged v2 running into my Roland JC-40, and the pedal does wonders bringing true tube tone and harmonics to the amp. **Highly** recommended going into a solid state amp, really brings it to life. (It also goes well into my Engl Ironball tube amp, for what that's worth)
Cheers mate! CTC pedals are some of the best in the World that I have had a chance to try. Great build quality and they require no fiddling to get good tones. :-)
It is a good sounding pedal. My question to you Shane is this. I settled on a tone master deluxe reverb in the early summer. Would this one little tube really add any tube sound to the digital sound of the tone master? Or do you think it would be negligible?
haha yep! That's just saying be careful of the tube if you open it up. :) These pedals are built like tanks. I have been using some of their other pedals for years now.
@@intheblues I was thinking that this might be good in front of my solid state amp to get some nice tube tones. But 249 Euros is a bit steep for me. I think I'd be better off getting an Artist Tweedtone 20R, keeping my Tokai TOD-2 and selling my Solid state amp. It's be far cheaper in the long run. Still it's a nice pedal for those who can afford it.
I think using a 12AY7 is the way to go. This pedal shines as a boost to add some grit. Don't over power with too much gain, just boost it up a bit and it sounds great. You don't need a whole lot of gain when you think about it.
@@intheblues I'm learning the value of the guitar's volume control having recently acquired a Gretsch with a master volume. Once you have that it makes life a lot easier.
The Maxon ROD-880 and ROD-881 (I have the latter) are both good tube-based pedals. The ROD-881 is a dual (Drive + Boost). They're based on the old Ibanez Tube King.
Lots of saturation, overtones and crisp definition- very usable - more a Rock pedal to me. On a different note the Kiesel you custom designed is pretty much exactly what I would like only in green or blue - most of the others on the site I didn't like at all!
What are the similarities and differences between this in fat mode w/ gain at noon or less compared to the Keeley Super Phat Mod with "phat" switch on. I love the the Keeley but like "tube pedals/amp in a box" in front of my Roland BC Artist? Fat/Phat modes for my Teles and Strats. Trying to make a decision but don't want to buy the Keeley if I can get the same tone thickness from a preamp pedal.
At 409.00 AUD or 291 USD it’s a just to expensive....most of us can get a great tone with a decent boost pedal and a good amp..... When reviewing expensive pedals on your channel Shane ... (if not supplied) would you purchase and use this ?
I am always on the hunt to test and try new things that give me or someone else inspiration to play. Part of the idea of gear videos is for the person watching to see if they like it enough to check it out. Tone is all subjective but Crazy Tube Circuits and VS Audio are my two favourite Greek pedal companies for a long time now. I use a lot of their gear on my board and channel already.
I'm obviously not Shane, and I do not get sent pedals (or anything else) to review. I bought this pedal and it is my main source of mid-to-high gain. I use it in front of both a Roland JC-40, where it erases the solid state sterility and adds grit and harmonics, and also in front of the clean channel of an Engl Ironball. Sounds great, and I don't want to be without it.
I'd be nervous at the idea of a 'stomp' pedal with a glass tube inside. Not sure if it's a wise move, or even necessary given today's emulation technology.
I'm very skeptical of any pedal that claims to utilize a tube for gain. Every tube pedal is basically a marketing scam. Tubes need high voltage to amplify the signal, they can't get that inside a pedal from a 9V PSU. So, what they actually do is simply act as a buffer, slightly coloring the sound.

It's GROOVY Shane! Good demo! (AS always!) \m/
Does the tube light up under operation, like it would in an amp?
If it doesn't, then it's not amplifying any signal.

A Greek manufacture sent a pedal all the way to Australia just for a review. That goes to show you just how valued and respected Shane's opinions are.

Nice Shane, that V was thick! It’s crazy how dynamic this pedal is. 👊
CTC is definitely one of my favorite pedal makers out there. I have this and the Killer V and both sound fantastic.
