BOOST HOT AND COLD WATER PRESSURE - Stuart Turner Mainsboost
Вставка
- Опубліковано 31 лип 2024
- Today we look at boosting hot and cold water pressure with no pumps or electricity.
I'm going to show you how to boost the pressure of your hot and cold water pressure using a stuart turner mainsboost cylinder vessel. I'll show you how the test kit works, how the upstream kit with non return valve, pressure regulating valve and strainer works. I'll then show you a low water pressure and dynamic flow problem in the studio and how we improve it using a Stuart Turner Mainsboost.
I'll then plumb one in in my own home and show you the hot and cold water pressure improvement.
If you even find a tap slows down or your shower goes hot and cold when another tap is open, this could help.

Can you take me on as a apprentice?
Planning to install at home. How much 22mm pipework is needed after the tank before it drops to 15mm? Is there a minimum distance? Thanks in advance if anyone can help
I thought this accumulator vessel needs additional pump?
Excellent video James, as a trainee plumber this has been a massive help for me.
Wicked vid, you possibly are the best social media plumber on the net, keep them coming sir king James of Watertown👍
I fitted one of these last summer, went from a dribble of a shower to one of the best I've had! Nice to be able to monitor the incoming pressure too as we seem to have intermittent issues, this gives us an emergency back-up during those times too. Stuart Turner were very helpful in speccing the system.
They're great mate!
Another great video James! Really useful to see this product!
Really great product James. Lovely install.
Brilliant video and looks like a good bit of kit flow improvement is impressive.
loving the song outro. i think you might have to produce a few more of these choice songs for your vids. enjoyed the mainsboost demo & info too.
very interesting, very well presented and easy to understand thanks.
Great product James. Really good vid too.
Fitted and linked two 450ltr Stuart Turner water accumulators. In a property Feeding two 300ltr Megaflo's. Got another one to fit. Good bit of kit.
Great demo mate, and explained.👍🏼
Awesome video James, thanks buddy, they really help.. as a trainee 🙏
Great demonstration 👌🏼
Hey James - great video! We get a lot of water outages in our village (4 this year), I feel the stored water will give us a buffer to bridge the gap, as well as improve the dynamic pressure.
Yep!
Great video James, really helps us guys training to understand how these systems work... :-)
Thanks for spreading your knowledge
Great video. Very interesting video. Thank you.
Great video mate! Perfect.
Jesus bloody fantastic I need one, thanks for a great demo 👍👍👍
Great video as always
Another great informative video, being made redundant next year and really thinking plumbing may be a idea.
Yes would be good to get more explanation in the videos of things like this. I think it would really add to his videos although they are already very good these sort of additions would take them up a notch. I guess James knows and it is obvious to him but for those, like myself, who are not plumbers we are left in the dark. Very interesting video as it is though.
Great video mate 👍
Top notch video James. Have fitted these and they are the dogs 🌰🌰 👍
Great video can you please do a video with the upstream pump if static pressure is low.
This looks like a great bit of kit! So its basically a giant accumulator for the cold main
Essentially yes!
5:35 Easy BIG WIN
ua-cam.com/video/zslB3TEw9MY/v-deo.html
Help full as usual 👍
That's awesome!
With absolutely no electricity or pumps involved too! 🙂👍
It all depends on your water pressure coming into the house. If your water pressure is bordering 2.0 bar or under, then you would need a Mainsboost charger to boost and this would need electricity.
We thank you for that video!
Great video, thank you
I have been doing a bit of work on my plumbing recently and biggest revalation was that the bore on the 22mm mains inlet is slightly smaller than the bore of the 15mm plastic pipe!!
Great vid.
Great video 👍
fantastic peace of kit.
Great video James. I have recently had a combi installed and to be honest I expected more pressure from the taps. When I run a hot tap then run a cold tap the hot tap slows down. Which I understand now as they both come from the same supply. Anyway, I really like the idea of these accumulators as I now have no tanks at all in the house so have room for one.
James or anybody, what should I budget to have one installed. Bit of info, mains water comes into the kitchen, combi also in the kitchen, accumulator would need to go in the loft.
Great video - thank you. For the accumulator tank - what pressure should you charge it to before filling with water?
great video, how long can the increased flow last if alot of taps etc are opened?
Hi James......love your videos well good......and helpful.......just a quick one....I have a water meter on the wall in side my house.....it's installed horizontally is it possible to change it to vertically.....thanks
Great video 🌟
Cheers dude!
Quality 💯 🙏
Great video, does the cold pipe to the rest of the house need to be 22mm after the mains boost?
Hi James, Great video for boosting main water pressure. I have graverty feed system with cylinder, can I fit this system on my graverty system? Also is it possible for your to send link for the complete booster system.
Many thanks.
I guess you blokes are in Australia aye. In America we use those in rural areas in association with a well pump. Gotta fill'em up with air. Keep up the good work
Great video James. Would this boast pressure for an indirect hot water system? I'm a little confused how it would work.
You could end up with leaks in pipework on old systems shorly. I like the idea on a new system. I'm a newbie to plumbing.
Could you do a video on the Micro in line booster pump from Flowflex?
Great video, thanks. I just have to the same question as a couple of others on here... and that is... what is the length of time that an accumulator can keep up the pressure ? (Obviously this will depend to a degree on size of accumulator but we have enough space for one about 1500 tall). I have a job to do to convert from gravity system where currently nothing is pumped, original plan was to upgrade to a new heat only boiler and a larger lagged cylinder and keep the decent sized CWST and add a 2.0 bar shower pump but I’m contemplating this approach instead, though I’m concerned that the ‘accumilated’ pressure will die off over ten mins. There is 3.5 bar standing pressure but I never like to rely on the fact that this will always be the case (that’s why I don’t really like unvented installs) any feed back would be appreciated. Thanks. Tom.
Great vid mate. As long as it is connected to the cold main can it be located anywhere on the system?
Great video James, I'm a newly qualified Gas Engineer, so going to get me G3 qual soon. Just confirming, as this is all cold water at pressure this certainly won't require that qual. Also, if it is a big house with a system combi, should that unvented cylinder do this very job (I think it does, but worth asking), could this be added to a system combi if the outside pressure is low to start with?
Hi @plumberparts - great video! We're on an unvented system and looking to get one of these installed. Couple of questions - 1. Does it make a difference where the vessel is installed? We're hovering around 2 bar on our system with the cylinder in the loft, presumably that'll be a bit lower up in the loft? Would that be sufficient 2. Is there any difference between the Stuart Turner Mainsboost and other accumulator vessels in principle or is it just a brand? Thank you!
Hi great video. I have an unvented indirect hurricane installed. I have weak to no flow/pressure in my loft when turning on the garden tap. I have everything still exposed. Was wondering if this system will fix it? My mains has a 25mm blue pipe to 22mm stopcock which connects to my 22mm pipe. Would it be worth digging my front drive to change a potential 15mm pipe and then hooking it up to Severn Trent outside stop? thanks !
Great video. How long does the increased pressure last?
Run a bath can it refill quick or is that when you need a pump bit like the megaflow great vid
for the install that you did, did you have to run a cold main pipe to the loft to the combination valve without it being tee'd anywhere like the sink, bathrooms etc? but only feed them after the combination valve.
Great video, can I ask if you would recommend running 22mm pipe throughout rather than 15mm to the taps and shower?
Got a problem in house divided into three flats with one main coming into the basement. Can you recommend a boost system that works from basement up. All have condensing boilers.
Hi James. I assume this is no good for a gravity fed system? My gravity fed hot water system is made worse by the new fangled 10 mm flexy hose tap connectors, any advice for this?
Hi James, great video, I have had a stuart turner mainsboost Flomate fitted which has definitely helped the water pressure in the shower.
The pump is located in the kitchen cupboard and is causing quite a bit of noise in the bathroom and 1st bedroom, any ideas? Is it just the water flowing through the pipes?
Cheers James
Does this work for hot water in non pressurised systems (with header tank in the attac) too, or would I be better off installing a shower pump to boost my hot water pressure?
Yeah but surely if someone’s in the shower for a long time or you’ve run a bath for example it would have used all that pressurised water up and then you will have the same problem until the vessel is filled again
Hi I’m gonna fit ones of these in my house but won’t it only work on anything that is connected after the boost. What about taps ect that are connected before the pipe reaches the loft?
Thanks
Hi James, what’s the cost for installing this
Pump (material + labour) any recommendations for installer?
what size tank did you use in the test case. Just thinking about what size to install in our one bathroom, two bed flat.
do you just replace the small pressure vessel that comes with the sealed hotwater cylinder with a larger vessel to increase the hot water pressure
Hi mate, could you please touch on boiler stoves and how one could run rads off of it safely please
Hey @plumberparts. Two questions. If you have a pump, what's the precharge pressure needed in the mainsboost. Also, is this connected before or a whole house Harvey softener
Am I right in thinking that his can be installed in any part of the house with an accessible 15mm water to be in series with he cold water in the rest of the houses provided the regulator are installed before the tank?
LoL! Top video and that song needs to be released! 👍😂
hi .so can it just tap into the 15 mm existing? I only have 15mm all over the house?
Does it have to be the first item after mains in or can it be put anywhere in the system?
Good morning everyone from wellington Somerset
MORNING!
Great product and good example. I have a question for you. I have a combo boiler in the kitchen and since fitting a mixer tap on the bath. When ever I run the cold water and shut it of fast for example a lever tap ihear the boiler try to fire upfor a brief moment as if I'm running the hot tap and then it stops it also does it when the washing machine is on
Get a shock arrestor fitted to the cold supply pipe feeding the boiler
Planning to install at home. How much 22mm pipework is needed after the tank before it drops to 15mm? Is there a minimum distance? Thanks in advance if anyone can help
How does it improve the pressure of my hot water if it is coming from a Combi Boiler?
Hi James or any other people in the know, I am having a unvented system installed, to save digging up my drive to up the size of the incoming mains could I install one of these vessels ?
What size is your cylinder? How long before the contents of the cylinder is empty? Great vid.
How much does this system roughly cost fully installed? We have noticed ever decreasing flow/pressure in our house over the years and have 3 bathrooms and a unvented hot water system. So I’m hoping something like this could rectify our issue
Would it work on an existing megaflo system?
How loud is the pump in the loft, do you have a video of what it sounds like running next to it? Can you hear it outside the loft?
Hiya thanks for the vid, good info, I am not a plumber but I do understand the basic principles of how this system works, what you don't explain is how long this extra water storage lasts for, while in use, for instance if the washing machine is on, the toilet as been flushed and someone is in the shower how long would it last before the extra water pressure is all used up? please don't say how long is a piece of string, it depends on how many items are drawing water etc, for instance if the expansion tank roughly holds 60L and the pressure is 3bar how long would it take to use that amount of water and the old pressure would be back to normal, the reason I ask is that I have a large family and my shower is on constantly for at least 90 minutes or more each morning, I'm not sure that this device would be of any benefit to me. thanks in advance for any reply.
Hi, every one refers to combi boilers. Could you do a video on condensing boilers and cover the basics....even if only to say its the same or different as a combi boiler. EG how do you turn off the hot water supply to change a kitchen tap with such a condensing boiler.Thanks.
Why would the precharge only be 1.4 and not equal to the pressure reducing valve?
Can I use this on a maxi pod?
How can this be applied to a system which has a hot water tank which has an immersion heater in an open tank ?
Oi oi James,
Do I need the tank if is a bungalow with a combi boiler?
(Small bungalow-15mm pipe)
Ta very much!
Does it time limit and needs to recharge?
Great vid! I didn't even know these existed. I was planning to go the unvented cylinder route to improve water pressure to the loft bathroom (4 bathrooms in the house) would installing this system negate the need to go the unvented route and stick with a combi boiler?
These improve both unvented and combi, so the choice is yours.
Would a whole house booster pump not be a cheaper and easier option? Sorry if its a stupid question just trying to figure out what will help my situation
James I currently have a multibloc which has a return cold port and a pressure relief port would the Stuart Turner bloc be able todo the same ? I have a unvented system. My shower pressure is really poor and wanted to add this to increase I have a rain shower would this solve my issues ?
That face though 😂😂😂
Can these be used on a unvented cylinder
Good video, how long would it be able to supply the 2 hot taps before flow to one of them became an issue again.
Sorry didn't read comments, there's already been a shit load of people asking same question.
It basically stores the pressure produced from the treatment works distribution pumps like a capacitor stores electricity for short term use in a circuit or the battery in your car. (I know, because I control a major London water treatment works with over 1MW of pumping supplying over 1.1 million people) .......... using the utility companies pumps (Storing their pressure) to boost your flow and pressure.
Would be interesting to see how long it lasts before it just returns back to a dribble once the bladder inside has equalised with the water pressure and flow coming in.
Great comment mate! Must be a very interesting job. The bladder on these would last happily for filling a bath or something. Rememberign that the CWM is still adding to the flow from the bladder during use.
@@plumberparts been watching your channel for a couple of years now. You really helped me out. I'm good for the 100" 48" 54" pipework at the waterworks using ozone and chlorine and sulphur dioxide streams etc... but domestic is a different ball game. Only thing that is the same is the Wras approved parts. Great channel fella...
Hold tight 🤑
Could see a link to the Stuart Turner test kit on James's amazon shop, so here's a link www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0897QGCZW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_eFVzFbSDF8VDH
So it’s like a battery? Stored kinetic energy waiting to be used
The Salamander HomeBoost has already won this battle.
Why was the pressure from the 15mm incoming main so high in the loft (7 bar)? It was 4 bar downstairs…
Very interesting!
So the regulated static pressure is less than the original unregulated static pressure but the tank stores pressure which increases the dynamic pressure when more outlets are opened and sustains it? If you have only one outlet open, say a shower, will the lower regulated static pressure result in a lower flow to it? What defines how long the boosted dynamic pressure will last??
My incoming main is in the garage. Could I add one of these in the garage immediately after the main stopcock
If my questions reveal a total lack of understanding there is a reason for that.......LOL
These systems often get installed in garages, so yes you could set it up in there. How long the boosted supply lasts really depends on the size of the system and it's use. You can also complete a site survey form to get a bespoke recommendation from one of our experts. That tank is basically an accumulator. Versions of it (much heavier/thicker metal of course) are used in hydraulic systems as well, except an inert gas like NITROGEN must be used in the bladder above the water, instead of air. What about the amount of time other taps are open if they are all open at once? Can this keep up with the amount of flow being used; there must be a time limit at which it couldn't keep up with the amount of water being used?
Thank you for the video. I've been waiting for you to do an install of this system. Very informative and fun to watch.
I have essentially the same product (250L horizontal)
Would you be willing to help diagnose a low pressure/water flow for my aqualisa mixer shower (connected to a combi boiler) ?
Fyi-The bath tap pressure and flow is wonderful. Especially cold outlet which I think may blow a hole in the bath tub !!!!!
