Jackie, man. at this time the Spanish developed a unique formation called the Tercios (Thirds), one of the finest professional infantries in the world. They had 10 companies of 300 soldiers each, of which 8 were pikemen's companies and 2 were of arquebusiers. Later they added swordsmen, making the whole thing a pretty deadly combination.
This mod actually takes place some 100 years after the tercios' glory days, this is the era of Dutch and Swedish brigades with pike-to-shot proportions basically reversed.
Other way around actually, the tercios started with a relatively even split of pikemen, swordsmen and crossbowmen, and as they went on they gradually replaced the swordsmen with more pikemen and the crossbowmen with arquebusiers, since pikemen countered cavalry, which were the biggest threat to the arquebusiers. When two tercios met in melee combat that was called a push of pike. As firearms became better and better, the arquebusiers started replacing more and more pikemen, and eventually they dropped the pikemen altogether and evolved into line infantry.
Yes like someone already said the tercios were already pretty outdated during the time of the 30 years war. Most had switched to a mix of Maurician or Gustavian tactics.
