I much prefer drive 95 honestly, evokes the era of stunt games and early 3d (playstation release year and also windows 95 right?) and is also a neat rhyme. not to mention that 95 is a high speed mph. Maybe something like 'driveover 95' or 'overdrive 95'?. Woah I'm weirdly invested in the title of this game I only found out existed 12 minutes ago! Cheers to a happy development
It's a cool idea to uncover the difficulties of game development, however you have a huge advances since you are a well known brand. It's much much harder for people who don't have a following or even a budget.
Don't know how fixed the artstyle is but I think an aesthetic that might fit the game really well would be an arts & crafts kinda style with the cars made out of cardboard. Really liking the physics so far, they look really fun!
"Definitely did more hours than we paid him for.." Obviously you're at the fun stage of a project, but this is how crunch culture begins, esp for contractors. I know you're good people, but please be careful. It's so easy to get into bad habits without even realising.
100%, had the same reaction. Crunch doesn't (just) happen because evil directors/producers crack the whip, it happens cause the ratio of expected scope to work hours is unrealistically set. If someone is working more hours than they're getting paid for, then either scope needs to be reduced, or more work hours need to be added (by either paying them for more hours, or bringing new people on). If y'all really want to understand the game development process, this is a very important aspect of it.
yep, if the result of this is the game fails because you can't afford to pay people correctly and fairly you should make that the end result. please don't glamorise crunch
I reacted strongly to this as well and came here to point it out too. Game developing isn’t going to develop unless this stops being keuwl, fun and soooo manly
Wishlisted. I'd love to see you lean hard into the ultra low poly aesthetic, like Stunt Car Racer on Amiga or Stunt Race FX on SNES. Faceted terrain would look killer.
I absolutely loved Stunts (on PC around the DOS/486 Era) back in the day. I think I would love a modern interpretation of that - and adding multiplayer will make me a 100% customer. If we can get LAN mode, I am sure the game will end up as an LAN-Party classic ;)
Wishlisted! I am sure people have asked for this already, but I will my request to MAKE THIS PLAYABLE ON THE STEAMDECK! Great work! This sounds like a great series!
In one of the next videos I'd be interested to hear how you landed on the minimum specs for what computer can run the game. Obviously this isn't a computer killer, but is that automated by Steam or did you have to manually do it?
Im no game dev, but the idea of open ended maps where you can drive through the hills and valleys etc is REALLY appealing. Id love to see that idea explored. I cant think of any solid gameplay ideas but the potential is exciting.
I can't help but think that development would go smoother if the game was made in Unreal. Regardless I appreciate the parts that cover the whole process of putting a game on Steam, very insightful.
I'm not sure if you are looking to focus specifically on racing, but the game Rush 2049 on the N64 had an actual stunt mode where you would drive around various car-sized skateparks and do tricks. Might be something that could fit into this game, though it would obviously require additional work.
Would love to see more videos on this game as development continues before early access! I think a video about working on a trailer would be good fun Also I think Drive 95 sounds a little better than Stunt Derby, makes it sound a little more unique
Stunt Car Racer on the Amiga was one of the first games I ever played, Trackmania has kinda kept the genre alive but there's nothing quite like some old-fashioned Stunts.
At some later point I would love to see you picking over SummoningSalt's Mario Kart videos for ideas on how to avoid racing shortcuts (or embrace them in a fun way). Excellent idea for a series, good luck with the game!
Hey Danny! Haven't been following you since the random encounter shows at gamespot. This project, and the unreal facing worlds video are homeruns! keep 'em coming
So... the thing that would definitely make me buy this is the possibility to get powerups / weapons / etc. that you can play with multiplayers, and rather than just a sandbox, potentially have the option to have true race structures with checkpoints / etc.
Games looks great! I noticed a lot of cars not able to make the circular loop shape, have you guys considered using a clothoid shape similar to the ones they use in coasters? It might make it easier to finish the loop. Can't wait to see the finished project!
This is the weirdest occurrence I have ever seen. The man who made sub Rosa and the guys who make those cool documentaries are making a game together?? What timeline is this
"The man who made sub Rosa" No, the man who pretended he was going to make Sub Rosa, abandoned it, and then behaved like an ass toward anyone who asked him when the hell he's going to work on it again.
Big Rigs spiritual successor? Although the roads seem to work properly so maybe we've made progress in game-making tools since then. Edit: Oh wait, this is actually a real game, with proper design and strategy!
Cool, love following you guys and all the interviews! I run our game-pitches pipeline at tinyBuild, so if I were doing my job I'd invite you to have a chat with us about publishing Stunt Derby! A bit scared of this note at the beginning where you grimace about publishers though, I gotta say.
Looks like it'll be a fun lil game. I am a little surprised, but cautiously optimistic about seeing Linux requirements existing on the page. Though even without a Linux build I'd imagine/hope it shouldn't have too many issues with Proton.
so in order to understand how games are made, you 1) took a dude who had already written most of the code and convinced you to use it, and 2) he's literally reinventing the wheel instead of using a game engine. Not sure you'll have the typical experience there but at least it's fun :p
huh this seems kind off like an intresting spinoff off mark's gamemakers tool kit videos on making a game from scratch with no knowlage. this will be fun to watch good luck!
Drive95 definitely feels better after seeing the game, Stunt Derby feels a bit more vague and also implies it's more of a Stunting Derby than what it is at the moment. Plus, Drive95 probably has better SEO and sounds better, in my opinion
Yea it wasn't mandatory but for the game to be on the Brazillian steam store we had to ifll out a questionnaire. It was pretty cool. the other ones like ERSB/PEGI require you to go through those organizations (and presumably send them the game and pay). We did a doc on the ESRB on the main channel a few years ago ua-cam.com/video/TaB-Tp4G6WI/v-deo.html
Kinda Trackmania with collision but retro. I think this will get played/sold due to the brand but if it was some unknown solo dev I doubt it'd get touched unless Forsen finally finishes his minecraft speedruns and goes back to trawling steam daily releases for jank.
So you're not making a game so much as funding the creation of one where you can film the entire process? Sort of like how DoubleFine did it with Broken Age?
have you played TEREP2.EXE? that dude nailed how cars should feel back in the 90's, he made a basic terrain runner in assembly, later he went on to work on huge car games like 1NSANE, Burnout Paradise, Driver San Francisco and helped with the vehicles in SW Battlefront games (the PS4 games)
hey man I respect Danny for trying to start a development business and wish him & his partners the best, but for fuck sake lads it’s 2023 - we gotta drop the naive shtick that having opinions on games is a qualification for understanding just about anything about development.
Keep in mind that most of the projects that NoClip interviews have a publisher of some kind or a preexisting fanbase to bring attention to their game. NoClip itself can act as a publisher to fill in the role
Totally true. I think the idea is that we can use that unfair advantage to shine a light on it. This series is likely going to be pretty atypical of the average developer's experience, but we're aware of that and will try to highlight that truth as much as we can
Are you "afraid" that your notoriety will help you in a positive way when courting publishers? Like, if your goal is to see the types of deals people sign, that you'll be given preferential treatment over someone who is an unknown in the space?
For a game whose main purpose is to find out how to launch a game on Steam, it certainly does its job For a game worth $5-$10, however... maybe figure out what you want from the game first before selling it for more money than Vampire Survivors, at least
i dont see how you guys will be able to do it and be authentic. you guys have a huge following and a brand that will automatically pull people in. even such things as getting investors and collaborators. one thing would be if you didnt say anything and made the video at the end of it. fun concept tho.
So 3 minute in we find out you are not making a game. You’re paying someone to develop their own idea. Basically you’re a publisher. Not really the same thing.
...That's what they said...? They're very much aware they aren't actually making the codes for the game. The goal is to learn about the technicalities surrounding game creation. But they chime in with advices and opinions about the game's direction since they're paying for it, much like a publisher would and they even bring their own Patreons as playtesters so it's not fair to say they do nothing. Setting up a good steam page is as important as actually making the game
please invest some money to hire a good artist to make some really pretty low-poly art and maybe add some nice shaders/lighting to the game! then spend a bit to get some banging tunes! do yourself a favor and price the game higher than $10. don't undervalue the dev's work! even though i'm a bit late... wishlisted.

I used to play Ultim@te Race Pro, via LPT-1 serial ports between two Dell machines... and they had a really fun Tag mode, might be a fun addition.

The only downside of that name is that it doesn't convey the theme as well. Maybe Stunt Drive 95.
We're gonna end up changing the game's name about 50 times aren't we

Wishlisted! Finally a game worthy of Danny's full F1 race-seat setup in his garage.
haha, Alex has talked about putting in wheel support

Stunts was probably the very first PC game I tried. This was so fun to watch! I love the modern take on a abs classic!
Respect for journalists who do this type of thing, actually doing what they're reporting on.

This looking like on of those games similar to "The Long Drive" it's kind of janky looking but that is 100% what makes it so much fun.
Dang that looks fun! Stunt Derby seems appropriate for the chaos in the gameplay.
This is totally rad! Love seeing the behind the scenes of dealing with Steam.
