I already am!
Oh my freaking goodness. Thank you so much for posting this video. I'm a solo game dev that is running through some hard times. This is definitely some of the motivation I need. ❣
@@josephmorales652 good luck 😉
Congrats on another video! Please hire more (if any) black people as an Oakland studio, please hire locally and give back
Man it's insane how humanizing these documentaries are.
With the Supergiant documentary and now the Heart Machine one, I came in with pre-conceptions that were just shattered when you hear people talking about how they're just trying to do what they love.
Yeah, i just rewatched the Supergiant videos last weekend and the feels are still the same as when I watched it before. I love this and hope to see more, as much as I like watching videos with gameplay and art processes shown I love this humanizing types equally.
Read Jason Schrier books about game development and the working condition many game maker suffer. Maybe it makes me use kinder word to criticize arts lol
NoClip does a great job removing the mystery/mystique behind the making of games and show it's really a craft. It's' just regular people doing their best to bring something into the world. It requires many talents, skills, a little luck, and creative vision. NoClip docs always highlight that the games face a ton of obstacles and the real "magic" is how the developers overcome them. Wonderful doc as always.
That ending interview with Alex was absolutely heart wrenching. What a beautiful and compassionate human.
The Hades series with Supergiant was incredible. Really looking forward to this!
Yo mama was incredible
Yeah me too and hyper light drifter is a different game then Hades but I look forward to more
Alex is like a hero to me really, and HLD my favourite game and one of the reasons why I work in gamedev.
So I really wanna say thanks in advance for the coverage you guys are going to be doing for the next few years, it really means a lot to me and I'll be waiting patiently (refreshing the hell out of your videos page) for every episode.
Mister Preston I have the deepest respect for your mentality and strength. You can be sure that the work you and your team do, will help many people escape from their limitations or troubles. Be they physical, mental or both. Thank you.
As someone who also struggles with a debilitating chronic illness this was very moving. Can certainly relate to that feeling of needing to look past the pain you're suffering because you have better things to do.
That ending interview with Alex was heart wrenching. All the respect I have for him being willing to put that on film and let us all see him so raw and real. Couldn't be easy.
And I loved the rest of the episode as well, excited for more. I loved HLD and once Solar Ash is on steam I'll likely pick it up.
Absolutely amazing interview. Almost brought me to tears. Also the fact that they're such a small company and have basically the best insurance you could possibly have means there's no excuse for these other big companies to skimp out on treating their employees well
Unreasonably excited at this being the first part and being 47 minutes long.
That final interview with Alx is insane, a heap to take away and think about.
unbelievably hyped for this game, especially after how amazing the first was
A BIG thank you to all of No Clip and it's Patreon supporters for caring about video games enough to make such solid, well made documentaries on the people who craft these works of art that help shape our imaginations
Already *so good*! You cannot help but root for these guys.
excited to follow this game's development
Great first part of the documentary. I'm going to eat these up! I adore the work from Heart Machine, Hyper Light Drifter is one of my all time favourites and it's mainly because of the people behind, the real life story and adaptation of Mr. Preston's ails. It's an inspirational story. The fact that everyone in the studio enjoys the best health care, just shows how much love and care this team receives and gives, and that just rubs of in the work, even if that means delays.
Loved Developing Hell, looking forward to seeing how a different, somewhat larger?, studio operates.
The end brought tears wow, did not expect for this documentary to capture this magnitude of devotion and purpose that this team puts forth. Thank you for making this.
Awesome part one, got me choked up in the end. I hope Mr. Preston didnt go through too much stress during filming! And Im hyped for upcoming parts, I need info on this game badly, the concept and focus on multiplayer makes me incredibly excited
yeah that ending
🥲
Videos like these always affirm how much i want to work in the games industry. Workin in IT options are a little more limited but i always keep checking
heart machine is hiring an IT guy....
Another excellent doc, which isn't surprising. The little things elevate Noclip like that long hold at 9:00 after him answering questions about his heart was post production magic. I knew about Heart Machine but hadn't played either game yet but that will be changing very soon.
I feel like the Noclip folks are reading my mind, doing their deepest dives on the development of one of my favourite games, then on one of my most anticipated!
It's so interesting to see this kind of behind the curtains of a game studio that is among my top 3 favorite studios. Thank you for sharing it, I can't wait to see more behind the scenes at Heart Machine!
I used to work on an indie games website called Hyper Light Up. My buddy who created the site got inspired by Hyper Light Drifter, which is definitely one of his top 10 games ever. So yes, Alx's work has definitely inspired people already.
Fantastic documentary, fantastic and strong developers. I wish them the best.
This is one of the kickstarters I was extremely happy I supported. This was an amazing team and their game Hyper light drifter is a classic master piece.
Loved the pixel style of Hyperlight Drifter, and the soundtrack was awesome. One of the first indies to really grab my attention on the PS4
Hyperlight Drifter helped a lot through one of my darkest times from a succession of losses of people I care about.
It was different to the other games, it had a sense of emotional resonance that I felt drawn to, and connected to, with a very pretty art style.
Thanks for making it.
...and THANK YOU NoClip for doing your new series on this studio. x
I've owned HLD for a long time and never played it. This excellent documentary has just finished and I'm going to set aside a few hours today to hide from the heatwave and play. And also head over to the NoClip Patreon. What Alex has built up at Heart Machine is a great example of how to be a successful company in a cash driven industry in a dehumanising capitalist society while putting your employees health, aspirations and lives first. It's genuinely heartwarming ♥️
The Hades series is my favorite Noclip doc, and I loved Drifter, so I'm very excited to watch this unfold in the months ahead.
Great documentary. I love to see /Noclip back to in-depth "inside the studio" documentaries. Thank you.
I’m so glad we got an insight into this team. They’re a beautiful example of how positive a force devs can be
Thank you for making these documentaries. I absolutely love them and appreciate you putting the spotlight on the people and behind games we love.
These documentaries are always a real treasure with how well they're done and just how much insight it gives into the people working on these games. Glad to say every time I leave one of these videos, they usually have a new fan and customer too! Keep up the great work Noclip, look forward to many more!
This is the last minute where I won't be deeply invested in this new game and this team. Can't wait!
One of the best channels on UA-cam, proud to support you guys.
The end of this episode was very powerful. It reminded me of the Astroneer documentary, I absolutely adore Hyper Light Drifter and watching this episode was a beautiful experience - many thanks to Alx Preston and the team at Heart Machine for the games they have worked so hard on to share with us.
Ah I like the idea of this series! Getting a look inside thre gaming studios, can’t wait to see more!
Their studio in particular is kind of peculiar design-wise though, all white walls, no color at all to be seen, quite a contrast from the games they make lol
that's just a normal office building, dude, as it should be. fancy startup office deco shit is a huge red flag.
@@AmnesiacDoe Hair dye, belly shirts, men's painted nails, none of those are red flags. But an office with personality instead of a soulless bullpen? Huge red flag.
@@argylemanni280 Extremely curious how you've arrived at the conclusion that feminine men constitute some sort of red flag. Frankly, just reads as unhinged and unveiled homophobia. I'd advise you to stop judging buildings for prioritizing function over style, as well as people for the opposite.
@@argylemanni280 Unless this is supposed to be some sort of sick "gotcha" running completely counter to my original point -- I'm not anti-expression for thinking that most businesses trying to appear comfortable and trendy are doing so to mask some sort of stench. Businesses, as it turns out, are not people, and cannot express themselves. Only appeal.
When a moneymaking entity tries to appeal to you, always ask why.
they moved into this office like 2 months before covid and it sat empty until very recently
Mr Alx Preston already have his own legacy - Hyper Light Drifter is such a masterpiece that it become a legend already for a gamedev!
I can already tell this series is going to be awesome.
Wonderful, touching and inspiring sneak-peek into the "heart" of Heart Machine. I'm excited for the next parts and I want to express my gratitude to the team behind Noclip - you guys are legends.
I love this series, seeing the nitty gritty of game devlopement and see all this devs from so many diferente studios from so many walks of life coming together...so cool
Fantastic insight and great story. Also didn’t know about a new Hyper Light, that’s exciting!
I would say you guys are the Patreon I've been the most proud of being part of. These videos really are amazing and powerful. Thanks for the work you all put into making these things and sharing these stories with the rest of the world.
Such a great documentary! I love getting to know some of the developers more and learning how things got started and some of the issues with production etc.. I think it makes me appreciate the games more and look at them more closely, not just rush through to the finish. It really nice to see how well the workers of Heart Machine are being taken care of, and this should be the standard! So it's nice to see it in action and that the company is successful at the same time, and it's good for others to see it too.
What wonderful people , best of luck to them
Extremely excited about this new series!! And what a first episode, my god...
This video also inspired me to pick Hyper Light Drifter back up (I never finished it). Not only does Breaker look extremely cool, but knowing how much heart, quite literally, was poured into these games really makes a huge difference.
Sweet timing! I just found _Drifter_ today on Steam (by accident, as most great things are found) and fell instantly in love with it.... few hours later I get the notification for this video... one of those much too happy coincidences that make you wonder. Learning all these stories, from the studio logo and name to individual paths, setbacks, overcomings and sheer fulfillment will make me appreciate the beautiful game it is on another level. I didn't even know a sequel was in the works, let alone about _Solar Ash_ which I'll definitely take my sweet time with.
You guys are amazing.
I have seen Developing Hell probably 3 or 4 times at this point, I absolutely adore it. So I'm beyond glad that you guys are doing another series like this!
Alx has a vibrant presence and honesty to everything he says. In spite of all obstacles he chooses to expend precious energy to share his wonderful imagination with us all. Thank you Alx, you’re an inspiration to many.
I love that you continue to show then themes of COVID, and remote work and how they effect the industry. I also love that you show how and what makes a the company employee relationship good. Hearing that they get good health insurance and time off is very pleasant to hear, after so many reports of game companies deign horrible things to their employees.
I look forward to this series, the Hades series was fantastic, can’t wait to see this one too.
Thank you for the video. Alx is quite inspiring.
Beautiful documentary and a great view behind the scenes of heart machine. I can really relate to Alex motivation to create such games and worlds on a personal level. I recently just realized that for very similar reasons I got into gamedev, too. Wish him and the rest of the team all the best.
I just stumbled across this documentary while I'm re-playing Hyper Light Drifter for the third time. Had a peek at your channel and you guys seem to be doing a great deal of work and effort. Thank you so so much for it. Cheers from Spain. Keep up the good work!
This was quite an emotional journey. Not expecting that. Looking forward to the next one.
Fantastic documentary. I've been following Heart Machine's work as a fan for a few years now and it was really touching and even a bit emotional to see this side of the game development process at their studio. Please keep these documentaries coming!
Hey, thanks for bringing the documentary to life. All this crazy logistics, effort and work you put into this documentaries is really something valuable y'know? Love shines through it. Thank you very much
It's so rare for companies to take precautions related to the COVID epidemic. Khudos to them for actually caring about people!
😑 so rare
Doesn't everybody do it, actually?
Absolute banger of a first episode; I'm so excited to be following along with this. I really appreciated the way y'all got into stuff like remote work, covid concerns and challenges around staffing up (especially the way you took care to sketch out Heart Machine's position in a wider industry context).
I hope you'll be able to get into the financial side of things as the series progresses; I felt like that was one area that went largely untouched in the Supergiant series, and one that I feel isn't talked about enough from game reporters and historians. Especially given the nightmarish threads that surface occasionally on Twitter from indie devs who describe the things they have to deal with when contracted to publishers. I realise HM might not be at liberty to discuss the terms/specifics of their current and past relationships with Annapurna and Gearbox, but if there's any possibility of shedding light on the financial side of building a studio and developing these games, I would love to see it. I know it's not the most exciting aspect of this process on the surface level, but I feel like discussing the economics of this art form/business is just as key as shedding a light on the technical challenges faced by the dev team.
Thank you so much for your amazing work Danny, Jeremy and Frank; I'm so grateful Noclip exists.
Outstanding work as always from Noclip.
This was beautifully crafted.
The series on Hades is most probably my favourite on this channel and I'm always happy to get more of that kinda of content - I look forward to seeing how the rest of this game shapes up. NB: I love the working considerations these guys have put into working together remotely and at the office, it is a shame it isn't more wide spread considering we are all being told to "live with it..."
You guys have made these documentaries so "human". We look at companies like UbiSoft and Activision and assume they're the definition of what a game studio is. Then we see this. Thank you.
This was seriously great, it's so inspiring to see the devs like this and hearing about what they're working on, how they tackle problems, what they have to deal with, ect. And it's so nice to see the people behind the work.
I’m getting big hades doc vibes from this and I’m loving it
I'm glad to know Heart Machine is run by a good man at heart. Respect.
Love this studio looking forward to the next adventure.
Looking forward to watching and re-watching these
Awesome start. Really looking forward to this series.
Amazing! Love this! Thx for share this moment
Really wonderful, heartfelt start to the series. I'm excited to keep getting to know this studio the way we got to know Supergiant.
Thank you for the documentary and thanks to Alx and the team for their inspiring works🌱
Damn guys, this is amazing. Thank you so much for producing content like this. Top tier!
I'm so excited to see this series. I loved the Hades series so much and that got me hooked on this channel so seeing another documentary in that style is great. Keep it up y'all
Very lovely start for the new series, cannot wait to see more!
Fantastic ! As another person who is making games, its heartening to see these stories, to share the love for this medium, the hardwork that goes into it and why it all matters.
Absolute fire! This is so well put together, NoClip and Archipel are up there with the premium youtube game content.
I really feel for Alx and his motivations. He seems a genuine and cool guy, and his staff are clearly incredibly talented.
This makes me want to apply to Heart Machine for my next gig (I'm an engineer) and the remote option is def making that palatable. I love to visit LA but insane taxes, rent, needing a car and nothing equivalent to the NHS makes me want to stay in London (i know that sounds mad to people, but seriously, you'd be surprised how affordable London is compared to LA when you break it down)
Big up No Clip
much love to the people of this studio ! great docu
What a wonderful video. Thanks for this insight into the people behind the games.
Bought Hyper Light Drifter immediately, been meaning to for a while. God bless Noclip.
What a cool bunch of humans. Thanks for taking us along for the ride!
Gods work once again! Love it!
What a great 1st episode! I really hope Hyper Light Breaker is a big hit for them and they get to work on many more projects!
I played Hyper Light Drifter back in 2016-2017, it instanstly became one of my most favorite game ever. Back in that time i struggled with a lot of stuff, I felt like I was litteraly "cursed"... The textless narration in HLD was able to talk to me a lot even if in a way it's about Alx struggle with his heart issue. It talked to that closeted transgender girl who's afraid to embrace what she trully was, to that autistic person who couldn't comunicate properly with other human, to that depressed student who felt like nothing in her life had a worth... From the bottom of my heart thank you heart machine. Can't wait to get my hands on Solar Ash and Hyper Light Breaker
Great start to a new series! Can't wait for more!
Wow. I'm speechless. Such an amazing documentary. I don't know how to deal with The whole point. Thank you for your work.
Amazing vidéo, Always great to see the other side of a game developpement
this is giving sooooo much insight into game development process. Thank you!!! Also best of luck with HyperLightBreaker :D
Adding as i watched the end. Thank you for that sincere and heartfelt honesty. Unbelievable kind and touching .... thank you.
Amazing stuff. Looking forward to watching this process. :)
thank you so much for doing this!
This was a great documentary episode! One bit I was missing, though, were the timelines for some of those scenes, in particular for the various Covid precautions. Many aspects of game development are timeless and don't really require timestamps, but those scenes felt different.
Awesome, a new studio series. Enjoyed this first episode. Looking forward to the rest.
Looking forward to the future installments!
I'm not sure why this jumped out at me as much as it did, but it's kinda wild to me that companies use Discord for priviledged communication between employees.
Discord is way cheaper (i.e free) than competitors, but also does have a lot of the security compliances and certifications that other services do.
Heart machine has succeeded in being a studio with immediately recognizable work. I knew immediately that solar ash was a HM project. It's just got that je ne se qua
Fantastic work!
I love that they included the clip of Danny offering condolences for the dev's father who passed. I know there's always a debate about whether documentarians should remain invisible in their work. But this was just one little thing that showed this NoClip team actually cares about the people theyre working with
Looking forward for the next episode!
LETS GO!!!!! So excited!!!!!
Awesome video, cant wait for the rest.
Amazing content thank you NoClip!
