These guys obviously don’t know their hockey, especially Sid. He should do himself a favor and watch Crosby when he first broke into the league and the next couple of years. Crosby made a HUGE impact. There are things that Crosby does better than McDavid and vice versa. In today’s game, I agree McDavid is the better offensive player but in terms or overall two way play, I give the edge to Crosby. The better comparison is Crosby in his fourth year vs McDavid today. I’d say Crosby was better up until their fourth year in the league. McDavid in his prime vs Crosby his prime is still TBD.

His first goal was a deflection...also why would he need to change up his way of scoring when it works so well. For most players having just one play where they score a la McDavid would create one of their best highlights, while this 21 year old does it many times every season. Crosby has some creative goals for sure, and it’s impressive, but McDavid is just efficient

He use to split the D man in half all thr time to come straight alone in the slot. Things have changed ( multiple concussio ns...) Things had to change. Think of it like this, you have Crosby and McDavid matching up head to head in a playoff series. Who do you put your money on to outplay the other over the course of 7 games. My money is on Crosby and I say that with confidence. McDavid is probably the best offensive player in the league, but Crosby is the best all round player in the league. While McDavid can skate like the wind and punish teams big time on the rush, Crosby can be in a battle with three opposition players on the boards keeping the puck on a string and create something when you think there is absolutely nothing that can come out of the play. As skilled as McDavid is, I don't see him ever having the kind high level completely rounded out game that Sid has. I expect career wise, McDavid will put up better numbers point wise than Sid, accounting for injuries too, but I don't think McDavid will ever be the kind of guy that can figure out a way to beat any opposing teams game plan like Sid can.

Did he actually say "I've never seen Sid do what McDavid does?" One thing is clear: dude doesn't watch Sid much. McDavid is a generational talent, no argument. Sid is a generational talent that has won everything at every level. Sid is a 200-foot player, McDavid is not...yet. On defense, below the hashmarks, along the boards, behind the net, in the post-season I would take Sid over almost anyone who has ever played. Gretzky, included. Try, if you dare, to get the puck away from Sid. McDavid is in his fourth season and has led his team, as its Captain, to 1 playoff win. 1. By the end of his fourth season Sid had led the Pens to the Cup twice against arguably superior Detroit clubs, winning it the second try. That's something "I've never seen McDavid do". TM
One final, vital point: Sid entered the league when it was cool to tee-off on star players' heads. He lost two seasons to concussions and wisely altered his game. People forget how fast Sid played his first five or so years in the league. Sid is within a handful of points of Ovi - the other 'generational talent' of the day - despite having played 140 fewer regular season games than Ovi. McDavid has entered a softer, faster league that plays to his strengths. He'll probably outscore Sid for the rest of Sid's career. But he won't beat him. Sid's roofed overtime backhander the other night was just the latest example of why not. A proposed ranking (as if it mattered): Sid - 1. Malkin - 2. McDavid - 2a.

When Crosby came into the league there were 5 to 6 power plays a game. He had 61 power play points out of those 120. In McDavids second full year when he got 108 points the average was only 3 a game and the Oilers PP was so abysmal he only had 20 power play points. Imagine if the Oilers power play was in the top 10 that year, McDavid might have had 140 points.

I'm curious to see if McDavid will be nearly as good when he loses his speed (inevitable with age). Crosby is so good fundamentally, he doesn't rely on any one factor as he can beat you in a dozen different ways. McDavid is obviously very very good too but the question is, will he be able to adjust when he slows down? Can he grind out wins the way Crosby does? Can he make his teammates better the way Crosby does? Is he as defensively sound as Crosby is?

okay, listen. It is not just individual skill that factors in to decide who is better. (If it was it is definitely McDavid). Imma finally solve this debate once and for all........ through the youtube comment section of a Tim and Sid.... A good way to decide is if their situations were swapped. Mcdavid goes with the pens and malkin, in an easier time to score goals, and Crosby gets drafted with the Oilers and plays with the inconsistent draisaitl. Sure maybe if the oilers kept hall and he produced the same amount he does now, they would be amazing. They could theoretically put out a top line of draisaitl, mcdavid, hall. So it all depends on the situation they are in. If we are just judging by pure skill mcdavid would come on top for me. but if we are talking about success, than Crosby is better. I know that Mcdavid is still young but Crosby won his first cup at this age too

I think we'll have to wait until everything is said and done before we use the success argument. That's what the best players of all time debate is all about. Accomplishments combined with your dominance on the ice. Tough to say anything about that now when McDavid's career is just getting started and Crosby is still going stong and will probably play 5+ more years on a very good team. Both of them will have many opportunities to build on their legacies

Plus if you actually watch mcdavid he is one of the most solid defensive players. People say he’s offensive only just because they watch his highlights and assume he just scores goals. To me the best player RIGHT NOW is the guy you’d pick today for your team to make the biggest contribution possible and help win the cup. And that’s McDavid. But career-wise Connor will have to prove himself over a decade at least to reach Sid’s individual stats and have similar accomplishments. He might, but it’s way to early to say. Crosby is far ahead and is probably a top 10 player in history. McDavid is just not, not yet at least. He still has many games to play and he’ll have to win the Cup if he wants to belong to that club. It’s not going to be easy but he’s got the talent that’s for sure. Still, linemates, team-focus, leadership, longevity, a great deal of luck... it takes way more than individual talent to win the cup. And as long as you don’t win a Stanley Cup, you’re not a better player than Sydney Crosby IMO.

Crosby's edge-work, backhand, upper body strength, passing, shooting, coordination, balance, and hand eye coordination are all insanely good. I'd say they're both just as valuable, just in different ways. McDavid terrorizes defenders with his ability to out-skate defenseman on the rush and maneuver with ease at high speed. Crosby is just all around fundamentally superb in pretty much every imaganable way, McDavid excels with his legendary speed and quickness. They're both great and it's hard to come to the conclusion that one is definitively better.

No, just more flashy and had better dekes. Did you even watch young Crosby play? He was amazing, can't be touched. Also Crosby has a wide arsenal of skills - vision, puck protection, best backhand ever, hand-eye(deflections AND bat action), board play, front of the net presence, on-knee onetimer and the list just goes on and on. And his passing, speed and dekes are not much worse than McDavid, I would even say his passing is much better. Crosby, like McDavid, is both a playmaker and a goal scorer, but he's also a great winner so he's better as of 2019

Crosby in the 2009-2010 season had already scored 32 goals before the new year had he not been cheap shotted in the outdoor game he would have has a season for the ages. These types of comparisons don't make much sense. First of all, the question of who is better is unclear - do we mean who is more talented an athlete overall or who has accomplished more? Completely different perspectives. Just like Gretzky vs. Lemieux before - it could be argued that Mario (or Bobby Orr) was more talented but, if you are using results/accomplishments as your proof of greatness, it's obviously Wayne (Stanley Cups, goals, assists, etc).
Similarly, it could be argued that McDavid is currently better than Crosby (and that maybe he is better than a young Crosby was) but McDavid has offered very little in the way of proof or results definitively proving that he is better than prime Crosby. If having talent but not accomplishing much is all that's required to be the best, we could all argue that the awesome kid we played against from the next town over when we were 12 years old was the best player ever.

It’s an unfair comparison one player has a decade more of hockey under his belt. In terms of raw pure talent I’d give the edge to McDavid just so fast and dynamic and represents what the NHL is becoming - speed and skill.
Crosby is better in different ways - his strength down low and ability to control the puck even while chased by multiple players, creating space, etc. Not to mention that backhand. Crosby’s game is different now and matured quite a bit. I don’t think using “team carrying” is a good metric there’s so much that goes into that.
The mark of great players is they make others around them better - they both do that. So I think the most unbiased way to look at it is just one season, this season, and compare. Throw out the past successes that’s a different conversation. If you were to watch unbiased for this season alone start to finish, you’d have to conclude McDavid is the more talented individual.
I think where we get lost in this is our interpretation of “better.” Player X is better at this, Player Y is better because of this. I think the correct word is talent and I truly believe McDavid has surpassed Crosby in that.

Sidney Crosby started his career in a tougher more physical game where the average scoring fora team was around 2 goals per game. Mcdavid is playing in a league were more is being called less physical and the teams average around 4 goals per game.
Crosby played in a tougher and harder league to get points yet he still did and he did it with a offensive power house in ovechkin to compete with. Mcdavid is crazy good but put him in the league when Crosby got drafted I don't think he's this fast I don't think he's this skilled because there wouldn't be a need for so much skill in a league were it's still vastly far more physical. And also I'd just like to add. In a league were the young guys dominate the fact the ovechkin and Crosby are still putting numbers up to put them near the top at there age is remarkable and I believe those guys are battle tested and have nothing to prove. Mcdavid has a lot to prove and so does Matthews. And it might just be me but I find it hilarious how a player is determined how good they are based off of team achievements which blows my mind

2 goals and the OT winner in style. Stop the comparisons. Babcock said it best a week ago.

SId Six u obviously didn't watch Crosby from the start of his career. He was pulling moves n coming with mad speed like teams hadn't seen at that point. Crosby is the total package.

The reason the NHL is pushing the Mcdavid rivalry so hard is a face and dollars. Hear me out on this.. Crosby has been the face and marketing tool for the past decade that the NHL has used to market and sell its product. While Crosby is still amazing, they will need to build the next face as he grows older in the league. Do you really think Bettman, the league heads or the in the bed media cares who is more talented. No way.. They care about building the debate and grooming their next face to keep viewers and dollars flowing into their business for the coming generation. Its done in every sport and all comes down to marketing a product (nhl) and dollars. Who cares whos better, and just enjoy the game. They engineer this and it works as u can see by the arguing between the two camps. Just appreciate the gifted players we have the opportunity to witness.

Lets be honest, Crosby ALWAYS shows up when its time to win games. Does it better than anyone. Hence the back to back Stanley cups in recent times. You want an awesome, consistent player who puts up points every game, McDavid currently does it better. But if you want a guy who will show up and win you games when its time to play serious hockey, Crosby is my guy.

What would happened to McDavid when he slows down later in his career. Regardless any of those guys won't be able to beat any of Gretzky's record.

FACE OFF Ovechkin might break Gretzky’s goal record

Give me Crosby. His complete level is higher, knows how to win, expects to win, strongest on the puck in the league by far. Though I agree Mcdavid possesses skill Crosby has never owned, his style can be maintained when it counts in the playoffs regardless of his teammates.

Crosby might win a 4th Cup. He is in a playoff position that he might do this. Where as Connor might miss the playoffs this year in 2022.

Mcdavid is currently the best player in the world. Crosby held that title for many years. Mad respect to Sid, but the torch is passed
