This game has a very specific sound to it that I think few other games have utilized. It sounds so ancient and timeless. I absolutely adore soundtracks like this that try to instill a sense of mystery while sporting a fantastical flair.
The feeling of this game soundtrack for me look like a lot the feeling of the Lord of The Rings Trilogy soundtrack , evoking the feeling of ancient , lonely , misterious , somber , melancholic and nostalgic .
Shadow of the Colossus is indeed a finely crafted piece of art that will be appreciated for many years to come, but videogames themselves are an artform.

And while I still do not have a definitive answer I somewhat feel like, that beside its japanese influences it carries some mediterranean flair. Whenever I look at other musical inspirations for fantastical music, it seems more closely related to germanic, celtic or nordic. Shadow of the colossus has some truly fascinating roman, italian and even greek sounding themes.
Maybe because the music sounds like the game. To me, the theme sounds very calm, lonely and sometimes even sad, just like the game. AndI think its mainly inspired by native american civilizations, especially the temples.
This game has something, it's timeless, and once you played it, known its lore, it will stay with you forever. Be it for the desolation of its forbidden lands, the audacity and solitude of the main character or the noble grandiosity of these beings of light, it is not an experience that you will forget.
