  • My first day riding the Florida Adventure Trail on the HD Pan America. I picked up the FAT in Brooksville and followed the western leg north into the Florida Panhandle. My first dirt road turned into some soft sand and I bit the dust with a smile on my face. Good Times! Day 1 took me to Perry Fl where I decided to stay for the night and start again first thing in the morning. Day 2 of this trip will be posted soon.

    When we were kids riding we took for granted what kind of shape you need to be in to ride all day. These huge adventure bikes kick your ass just picking them up.

    Ha ha ha. This reminds me of my MABDR trip. It was all new to me, no off-road experience to speak of, ended up stuck on the side of the trail on Day 1, hiked out and found help the next morning and the guy who pulled me out rode the rest of the MABDR with me. It was a true adventure!
    I did watch both of your F.A.T. videos and I also subbed! Keep ‘em coming and we’ll keep on watching and commenting on them. 👊🏽🍺

      Hi! Thanks for watching. Its been scorching hot here in Fl;orida lately and havent done any adventures since the rain started falling. Going to do the western leg probably this coming winter. I want to give it time to cool off and dry out before hitting Ocala and all pats north. I also picked up a Honda CFR300L Rally so I'll probably do that on the smaller bike just because it's more nimble in the sand.

      @@retiredbikerit’ll be so much better on the CRF. I ride a BMW 800GS and there are times I wished I was on a smaller bike.
      The heat has been ridiculous. I’m just north of you in Birmingham, Alabama and the heat and humidity here have been oppressive at best. I’m sure Florida has been a lot of fun lately 🔥 🌞 🔥.
      I was planning on hitting Sturgis again this year but I won’t have the time to do it properly. I may hit the NEBDR and see what it’s all about next month.
      Too many rides and too little time. 👊🏽🍺

      Thanks for watching. Yes, sometimes we have to admit to our limitations. Even though I think I can still do what I did in my 20's, I have to admit I'm 58 and break a lot easier than I used to.

      You'll enjoy it but be careful. That sand gets soft quick in places. I ran into a couple of locked gates on the second day and got a flat tire so be prepared. Be safe. Croom is where I ran into the sand and I haven't done the eastern leg up through ocala yet. I know there is a lot of sand and mud there. The rains are starting and those holes will be full of water soon.

    Kudos. I sold my KTM 450 after rupturing my ACL on day 3 of the TAT. I've still got my V-Strom 1000 and have zero interest in lugging a big bike through the FL sand. I live about 30 minutes from where you began your ride in Brooksville. Sucks getting old. Good luck, have fun and ride safe!

    • @retiredbiker
      @retiredbiker  Рік тому +1

      I'm sorry to hear about your ACL. The majority of the ride was all all packed dirt roads and I did bypass a couple of the more sandy routes in and around Croom. I haven't done the Eastern leg yet and that goes up through Ocala, which is known for its sand and mud.

      Thanks for watching. It is a lot of bike but don’t let that fool you. It’s actually quite nimble in the off road category. But it’s still a 600 lbs bike when loaded and soft sand can be hard to manage on any two wheeler. I don’t consider myself young anymore at 58 years but I do try to stay in shape. Riding off road will do that but as you heard in the video, it will still leave me winded when picking it back up.

      Lay it down in your yard and learn the best way to pick it up. It isn’t that hard to pick back up. The sand can be a pain for sure, but at least it’s a soft landing. I recommend attending a training event if you haven’t done so already.

      I am very happy with the Garmin mount. I got it from Ali Express and its a Chinese knock off of the AlumaCycle mount. Even though I took some slack for not buying American, I have another video on it. I would buy it again. It does not lock, but there are options available.
      I think I've figured out why the Garmin kept losing power and will dive deeper into that issue soon.

    The problem with the garmin power is how it sits in the cradle. It's a known issue with the XT. Basically the GPS losses physical contact with the little power connectors on the mount. It's a poor design. I solved my issue with putting a small thin piece of paper behind the power cord where it mounts inside the cradle. This forces the connector to stay in contact.

      To be honest with you, I haven't yet rode ONF but the FAT does go through there. I've heard there is a lot of sand and mud there, which is why I decided to do the western leg of the FAT. We're coming into the wet season now so, if you're going to do Ocala, I wouldn't wait much longer or there will be a lot more mud. I'm in St Cloud so I'm almost 2 hours away from ONF.

    How do you like that Mosko 30L dry bag? How was that bike to pick up in the sand?

    • @retiredbiker

      The 30L is great but I do find the top loadiing to be problematic at times. I have my whole sleep system in there. Tent w/poles, ground pad, sleep pad, pillow and sleeping bag all fit.
      The bike isnt that bad to pick up. Yes, it weighs in at over 600 lbs with all the gear loaded plus my 210 lbs. So it doersnt like the sand too much. But, picking it back up isnt bad. Most of the weight is down low. Not as low as the GSA but still low enough.

    • @retiredbiker
      @retiredbiker  Рік тому +4

      The bigger question is… why not? This is Florida. This is what we have. If we want hills or rocks we have to go north of the state line. This trail was put together for 4x4’s and adv bikes using designated roads, WMA’s and state forests. The trail also coincides with both the Alabama and Georgia trails. I put a link to the Florida Adventure trail in the description. Please go check out their site. Thank you for watching.
