When you installed how did you go about the speedo? I have heard that you have to hardwire the neutral and reverse as well as do something different with the speedo for the NA since it is drive by wire and the NB is not. Looks great thanks for the video!
(THIS IS WRONG, see below) Reverse and neutral connectors are the same, no modification required. The speedo-wire from the 5spd can also be reused. EDIT: Actually on reviewing the footage, the reverse switch from the 6spd was required (the ball bearing looking thing). I cut off the 5spd one and wired on the 6spd. Similarly I also had to use the 6spd plug for the neutral switch (white plastic 2-wire connector). The speedo I simply plugged in the 5spd one and it worked.
Great Video.. Why did you use the Gray Permatex instead of the OEM Gasket? Did you use both or just the Ultra Gray? I'm about to do everything you just did minus the super cleaning and shining..
The 6spd doesn't have a paper gasket, as mentioned, only RTV. Permatex Ultra Grey is compatible with gear oil and can handle the trans operating temps. Good luck!
Very interesting video, I'm thinking of doing it to my gearbox, I just have a question, when filling the oil can it be poured from above where the gear lever goes? Thanks
Yessir, the area where the gear lever/shifter assembly goes is called the "turret" and on a 6-speed you can fill the transmission fluid directly in there. I've not done it that way before as you still need to get under the car to undo the drain and fill plugs. But if you choose to fill from the turret you'll need to have the fill plug removed to ensure the trans isn't overfilled. Although you didn't ask, you may want to consider using the Ford Motorcraft gear oil instead of OEM, it's common Miata hive-mind knowledge that it reduces grinding and improves feel. Otherwise Redline's also good. Thanks for the comment and good luck on your trans maintenance!
Thoroughly enjoyable video - loads of info and good breakdown of what to do with a replacement gearbox. However, I don't think that I would be as thorough as you were in wire brushing the whole casing - looked great when finished, such a shame it won't be seen except when you're working under the car!!
Really impressed with your job ! 👊 And , Nice t-shirt !😁
Thx bud, one of my fav shirts with good memories 👍
Great videography and detail
Thx man, and great screen name. I should change mine to HE Pennypacker 😜
5:20 lol
good video, very helpful. I would newer use a rotating brass brush myself though, as it inevitably will scratch up the aluminium.
What do you use to wire-wheel dirty metal? I was expecting the brass one to leave visible scratches but it came out pretty smooth.

I made a mistake in my last response. See the corrections below.

Hey do you know of any good 6 speed trans rebuild tutorials or guides? Having an issue with inadvertent not able to downshift into 5th
Unfortunately no, that's typically a job for the pros.
What did you use to take off the old gasket on the input cover? A scotch Brite pad? Or something else?
Yup, it's just a green Scotch Brite pad.
What year is your transmission? From a nb or nc? Great video.
It's definitely an NB trans. I have an NA so the NC isn't compatible. Thx!
Great video. Another "well while it's out.." things I'll be doing 😂 this swap is never going to be done
#projectcarlife ... It's what we signed up for 👍

@@mostlyuselessgarage Thank you very much, I will follow your advice 👍

Ur right, it's a reliable Miata, it won't be up on a lift that often! And cleaning is def a slippery slope, it's easy to get carried away
at the end you literally answered all my questions I was wondering...mind reader?
great vid man
Thank you sir! Glad you found something useful!
