Kmiata just released a kit to put a transmission from a BMW 3 series (e30, e36, or e46) into the miata. They're bullet proof and can handle a lot of power
julien g-r I blew mine up with around 240whp. I’m not nice to my transmissions though as I mainly drift the car. I went non turbo and to the ecotec swap because I wanted reliability and when I want to turbocharge that I can throw the solstice transmission into it which is based off the r154.

Hey greg with those 4th gears shifting there was a shop in aussie I read about who specialises in modding the s15 silvia 6 speeds (same aisin box apparently) where they mod the shaft and install a bigger thrust washer or something to ensure 4th gear doesn't move! I was going to do this to my own 6 speed but sold my nb before I got a chance. I hope you read this mate as it is an option, hopefully someone in the states can do the same thing. cheers
Sorry to hear your transmissions keep blowing up on ya. Since you're looking for upgrade options, I figure I might as well throw out a suggestion. KMiata makes a BMW transmission swap kit for BP engines that I've had my eye on for a while and apparently they can hold a ton of torque. It comes with the clutch, adapter plate, ect. but I don't know if you gotta swap out the diff for it. Here's hoping you get everything sorted out soon without any headaches, and I'm looking forward to seeing you throw that car around a track.
This right here, I was looking at their swap kits when they were still developing them. Glad they finally came out with kits and I'll be looking to pick up a swap kit for the getrag.
I wasn't sure if the drive shaft that came with the KMiata kit would bolt up to a 1.8 torsen miata diff. After rereading through the description it doesn't mention anything about it being incompatible so I guess it would work? In any case, I'd recommend swapping out to the getrag rear end as the 1.8 torsens have been known to crap out at around 400 hp and since Greg's best pull from his last video got 415 on the dyno I'm a little concerned.

Locking tires up mid-intersection = +9000 Street Cred. I heard back in muscle car days you were cool if you could slam your transmission into 1st from 3rd and get the wheels to lock when cruising the strip.
I've been talking with David at KMiata and he says they have a swap kit for the E-46 6 speed coming soon for all Miata BP engines that's what I'm going to run in my big turbo Miata. Thats crazy!I knew it was something with a synchro getting bound up, and that's why. I know you said on snap you didn't know what happened, but it was coming soon. you could totally fix that 4th gear issue. It would be much easier to find a way to fix both parts of 4th gear together. Maybe press it apart and use loctite? Or if that sketches you out, then drill a hole between them and then fill it with weld. Something to fix them would not be too hard and would be probably pretty reliable depending on how it's done. Keep up the great work.
I think I always learn something I never realized I wanted to know from your videos. It would be cool if you could weld that ring to the gear to stop them from separating.
I think summit sells a Quicktime sfi bellhousing that adapts a BP to a Tremec TKO. You could drop the twin disk with drag slicks and a tko 500 wouldn’t break.
I was kind of worried the reason for the long wait on this vid was broken transmissions. You've sold me on going ZF box and Getrag diff instead of trying my luck putting 430 lb/ft through a miata driveline from this vid alone :P. Maybe you can get a sponsorship from Kmiata or something.
I had the MSM 6 speed in my miata. It's built for 400 but still breaking it in so it's at like really just slightly over stock for now. Trans locked up and went spinning

i think there is an adapter for a t56. Look into it and see because it can handle the power. also you can cryogenic freeze the gears and micro polish them. the freezing makes the metal much stronger

Great videos and most underrated channel on youtube! Silly question but was the clutch adjustment correct? I had same issues after going with an aftermarket clutch on my msm but my hp is stockish. After double checking FSM clutch adjustment procedure, 1st and reverse gear has better engagement.
A sprung clutch won't save another transmission at that power level. Stronger internals and a stock throw shifter with the sprung clutch also, might. But at your power level a bell housing adapter and a tougher trans is possibly in your future.
I've heard people mention that in certain ways,the standard 5 speed is better overall transmission anyway,so even if I do save up any money to do anything significant to my car,I'm just gonna stick with the standard 5 speed that already in it. One thing I don't like about my transmission is that the 5th gear makes for a poor overdrive when driving at and maintaining higher speeds for like whenever I get out on the interstate at around 70-75 mph.
It's better overall as long as you're under 240wtq. Only reason I upgraded to the 6-speed was to hold extra power but as you can see that didn't work out in my favor lol
I really don't know what the deal is when it comes down to it,but I believe that I've heard of a BMW manual transmission being used on a Miata before due to the stock transmission not being strong enough beyond a certain level of power on either an LS swaped or Honda K-Series swap,but as I said before,I wouldn't know the first thing as to how to go about fabricating such a thing to work and it's possible that I may have misinterpreted my memory on this,but still sounded interesting,nonetheless. Maybe something like a completely different manual transmission could be made to fit your current BP engine and handle the power even better,who knows?
Joseph Rossetti yea but you can get a BMW trans for 300 and they won't either. Not to mention to my knowledge they don't make a kit for the cd009 and it's very heavy compared to the miata and BMW trans
Now, imagine having a 6-spd fail randomly while driving...being in 6th and the RPMs shooting up like if pushing the clutch in. After a quick, calm reaction to the situation, i found that only 5th gear would engage. Sitting at a stop, with the engine running, the shifter could be placed in 1-4 qnd 6th without the clutch...and nothing would happen.
700$ for 6spd miata box, holy cow.. Bmw gs6 zf+ bellhousing modifications etc would not cost very much more than that. Highly recommend. Its fast to shift and handles way much more power than the miata puts down ;) of course you need to modify driveshaft, gearbox mount, shifter and linkage for that and change clutch plates to have correct splines for zf input shaft. Lots of custom fabrication but definitely worth it.
I kept destroying third gear in my nv4500. Never figured out what it was. 600+hp probably didn't help, but I also liked to row gears like an Olympic rowing team, which I've heard can be stupid stressful on it.
I was wondering if you or anyone else could help since you’re a Miata fanatic. I let my friend try to do a burnout and he burnt the clutch a bit. I’ve done everything to make sure my clutch is still good; hard pulls from low rpms in a high gear, put the car in 4th gear and see if it stalls, etc and it all checked out. But on my way home, I began hearing a weird click from the clutch pedal whenever I was releasing it. When I got home I decided to push the clutch in a couple times to hear the click and find a diagnosis but then the NA began to beep lower than the beeping that happens when the door is opened and the sound will not go away! The clutch still engages and all but the beep won’t go away and I’m kind of desperate to see what it could be, my na8 is my daily and we drive 70 miles a day and I have only 1 day throughout the week to fix whatever it is. ANYONES GUESSES WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED! Thanks in advance

Greg, why not go with a Turbo 2 box? You'll have to fabricate a PPF mount if you want to retain that and have a custom drive shaft made, but it sure as hell won't fail like a Miata box.
Everyone is suggesting the BMW swap but every BMW I've driven I've hated the shifting! I think you will be forever wanting the feeling of the mx5 shifting back. How about an rx7 box?

I've just bought a 6 speed, should I disassemble it and put a small weld on the 4th gear? Should I replace all the bearings to? I don't know the mileage on the 6 speed but would it be worth doing all this stuff while I have a driving 5 speed in my car?
Curious if you could maybe Tig weld 4th onto its selector ring? grind a lil grove and just make a more secure connection. then grind it back so its flat? not sure if that would cause the heat-treating to be affected. maybe do it in small amounts like you would with bodywork you dont want to warp.

Should just be a matter of finding a yoke that works or a new D/S. Why would trans mean swapping the diff? This isn't mid-engine or rear transaxle?

if you weld the gear, you'll distort it. You'll need to do finishing operations on the gear teeth and the bore to make it usable again.

Tig weld 4th gear to stop it moving on the spline, we have been doing this in high power Toyota boxes for years!

not the best idea. Atleast not from an engineering standpoint. The gear will distort and needs to be refinished by gear shaving.

Curious if you could maybe Tig weld 4th onto its selector ring? grind a lil grove and just make a more secure connection. then grind it back so its flat? not sure if that would cause the heat-treating to be affected. maybe do it in small amounts like you would with bodywork you dont want to warp.
