We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.

Mom only canned jelly but she did it every year and I remember boiling those lids and gaskets. I too have to say thank you for that. I have a box that I bought for fermenting with and to make airlock with but got a free gift of silicon one way lids for fermenting from a friend's party. She had bought them and didn't want them so it went into the white elephant game.
So I have a box I was kind of afraid to use for canning but have been scrounging like a beggar for friends and family to buy them if they see them. I've found only 2 boxes of rings and lids myself. One of each size. I do have about 8 dozen mostly wide mouth lids
And I have about 12 dozen gently used lids that I use for around the house as dry goods lids and for scraping pumpkin guts and we even spray painted some as crafts with grand kids lol
I've dipped into them before and (thank goodness) no failures. In fact I think my old lids could be used again! The rubber seal is so much thicker.
But its been cool for a few days. I might get that box off the top of the fridge and play.
ETA: good gravy sorry for the typos I just fixed them as I was riding in the car with hubs when I posted. Sorry ☺

Me too! In fact, I reused some metal lids three times so far. Tatler rubber "rings" are really only good for one use and they charge the SAME for what I can buy metal lids! If you are going to reuse metal lids, just make sure they are not dented where you open the can. You can usuall avoid this my placing a towel over you jar of food and carefully using a can opener to pop off the lid. Even if you get a little dent, you can straighten it out with a spoon.

Isn't funny how people automatically trust those flimsy disposable lids with barely any sealant on them, but they're so afraid of a thicker, better quality rubber gasket? Doesn't really make any sense, except that people tend to just stick with whatever they're used to. ;)
The disposable lids were a great idea *for the company* - because you have to spend more money on them every year.

They say they can be used like 10X before they need replaced, not indefinitely. Alot of people will take a black magic marker line on the red seal to keep track of how many times they have been used. I haven't gone this route yet because I remember as a child the old style rubbers on canning jars. The children of the family would have to scrub the jars because we had smaller hands and the older kids had to take a razor blade and scrape all the old red rubber off of the rims! Hated that job! I know the Tattlers aren't like the old style rubbers but it makes me shudder thinking about it! I was fortunate enough to get 2 cases of each size lid at Walmart! I just happened to be there as they put them out, a case at a time and bought them. Went to a different Walmart in another city and got 3 boxes shy of the case of each size! I was truly blessed as I haven't seen any since then, so I am set for this year I think with what I had leftover from last year. I still look everytime I go into the stores.

    • @rhondacraven1351

I invested in these lids this year and the paperwork that came with it said the rubbers can be used 10x but as long as the lids are fine you can use them much longer. You can purchase the replacement gaskets. I plan to keep good records and see how they stand up over time. 🤞

I use masking tape to make removable labels on containers in my kitchen. Just basic Dollar General masking tape (the tan colored). I use this in the fridge, freezer, and pantry to label. I keep a roll and a sharpie marker in the kitchen put away in special place and my husband and child know that they are not to be used any where else. It’s easy to remove and my containers don’t have marker stains. Plus I have not had a masking tape label to fall off. The dissolvable labels get expensive fast, but one roll of masking tape lasts a long time, you can make the labels as long as you need them, and it costs so much less.

Save your seeds, do your own compost and fertilizer and have your jars, lids and land already bought and paid for and much of your food can only be the price of your own labor, fuel and taxes.

I was thinking I would need to use something clear that I could set on top of the book, like maybe plexiglass? That would also help it stay open and I could just wipe off the plastic. I remember my mom using Tattlers. Even last year, Tattlers & Harvest Guards were on severe back order. I finally received mine months later. When the Ball lids finally started hitting the shelves, I started picking up 4-5 packs each visit. I’ve yet to try my reusable lids, even though I’ve watched my favorite UA-camrs use them over and again. Thank you for this reminder. I will definitely use a few on my next canning project but no lie. I am going to miss that “PING”.
Since I am commenting before I finish watching your video, one UA-camr said that she puts a mark on her gasket with a Sharpie each time she uses it so that she can keep up with each gasket’s lifespan.

I broke down and bought tattler lids in both sizes in bulk last winter. Plus extra gaskets. I haven’t had the chance to use them yet. I’ve seen videos where they say attach the rings and turn back a quarter turn. Huh? Finger tight means something different to everyone so backing off a quarter turn didn’t make sense. I like your demonstration better and that makes more sense to me the way you showed us with a finger on the jar and tighten with the other hands until the jar turns on the counter.
Linda from Linda’s pantry makes little hash marks in the top of her gaskets with a sharpie so she knows how many times she has used a gasket. I like that tip too.

Thank you so much for making this detailed visual video. I've been staring at my few boxes of Tattlers with trepidation for over a decade. Mostly incapable of visualizing how to get the lid plus rubber ring, hot, situated perfectly on a jar, also hot! Kept picturing the rubber ring repeatedly slipping or falling into the contents and chaos ensuing.
Do wish the title or tags had Tattler for those trying to find videos about them. None of the other videos I've found previously made the entire process with differences, visually clear. Most just talked about it, which is no better than reading text for me, usually. I hope many people find this video!
A note on labeling. Those I grew up around all used a black wax/grease pencil for marking lids, jars, and freezer packages. It came off in soapy water from the lids/glass and such, reasonably easy. There are fancy versions of them on Amazon like mechanical pencils, plus refills. No idea if they work as well, but better than trying to remove marker; I suspect.

I reuse my lids if there are no bends, nicks, etc and the seal still looks good. Have had no issues. Also, Deep South Homestead had a great idea to use regular lids with the "pop up" from jarred grocery store items but JUST for waterbath canning. They say they've done this a while with no issues. That would certainly save a lot of lids for pressure canning.

    @orchidjewels4823 3 роки тому +8

I've been reusing regular canning lids for years and my parents did for years before me. Some of my lids have been reused over 10 times. I've found that if a lid will seal once, it'll reseal. Remember that a seal is a seal. I've had a higher failure rate from new lids than reused. Tattler lids are fine, but I already have regular flats. I know that the manufacturer says you can't reuse them. They also say you can't store canned foods for as long as I do. Remember that they want to sell more product, so telling you they are ok to reuse would be counterproductive. We are careful when removing lids and discard any that become damaged, warped or corroded. I remove the rings at 24 hours and keep them out to make sure they're really sealed for 2-7 days. Something else you might find interesting is we've just eaten tomatoes that I canned in 1994-1996. They were delicious with no discoloration. They had been hidden by other canned foods. They've been stored mostly in the dark and room temp or cooler. We've been eating peaches, applesauce, tomato products and green beans canned in 2013-14. Pears will darken quickly and not taste as good, so we like to use them within 2-4 years. I'm careful to keep them in the dark. Light will discolor and change the flavor and probably the nutrient quality of canned foods faster than anything. Heat will break down foods also. Canned foods stored in a cool, dark place will keep for years.

It is very, very low and mostly from low acid foods like meat. I pressure can low acid foods. We don’t need to avoid canning because of the possibility of botulism, we just need to know the science behind it so we can make informed and safe choices. I have had canned goods with the old lids literally last 20 years on a shelf in the basement. I do not trust the newer ball lids, and only use them if the canned goods will be used in the next year. She hated to throw out the lids. Over a year period I received more than 600 lids for free. Praise God. I shared them with others. Believing God for more for my needs and to share with others

I live in Europe and have never seen single-use-lids over here. To me it looks like quite a waste of lots of metal to single use only. Here we use Weck, or simalar brands, with glass lids and rubber bands you can use many times.

Weck is by far my favorite!

    • @Hippabellita1

Well, in principle the Tattlers look a lot like our WECK rings (well, only that the Weck is a bit bigger, has the "ear" to see if the seal is working and to unseal them) except for the plastic instead of the glass lid. :-)) Weck is a beautiful system ....

Weck can be seen as the expensive option in the States, mostly because it is unfamiliar I think. And, "officially" Weck now seems to suggest that their rubber gaskets are only used once which diminishes the efficiency (in terms of money). However, now that I am in the UK, I have given them a try myself (with plain tomato sauce, salsa, and pickled veg of various sorts) and been very happy one year later with the results. The rings look like they are still in good shape so I plan to do what so many people seem to do (and have done so for years) which is re use the rubber rings unless there is any sign of damage, cracking, stretching.

In my past of the country Wreck are incredibly expensive. I place a very high value on my organic, home processed foods, but I struggle with 6$ a jar..... Weck jars are very inexpensive in Germany.... Cheaper even then Ball and Kerr here.

@@jenniferr2057 I have purchased some Weck jars and rings to have on hand and used some twice. Makes me nervous. They 'were/are' very expensive compared to what used to be a 'normal' price for Ball or Kerr. It seems to me there is a huge rip off going on of Ball jars and lids. Just look at the outrageous prices being charged for them on Amazon.

No dishwasher, help!!! I love opening a steaming dishwasher full of canning jars waiting to be filled.
After watching your episode I went to an Amish store and was able to purchase 3 packages of 3 dozen
Regular mouth canning lids for $6.75 each. 6 dozen wide mouth for $13.95. They are like the bulk lids from a
well known store frequented by some of our homestead friends. Some might not think that is a good price,
But better than no lids at all. Thank you “Hidden Treasures”! 💙
