Ya I remember listening to this song all the time when I was little, but I had never payed attention to the lyrics, when I found out it's talking about where I live I couldn't belive it, this is probably the only thing people can recognize this town by. I love it!
Great song. John has taken care of himself, and his voice sounds great. Creedence could have been just Fogerty and session musicians, and been just as good.
Beautiful rendition by a true American icon of popular music. Such a bare-bones version, too - just his great voice and phrasing and strumming chords - not even the famous guitar riff or the modulation in key for the last verse. But so great nonetheless. I've read his autobiography (Fortunate Son) and other biographies of Creedence - he's certainly a survivor of what can (and was, for him) be a cruel and unforgiving industry in which to make a living. His talent and non-quitting spirit have made him a true survivor and beloved Hall of Fame artist, deservedly so!
This guys a one huff, no one like him no one even remotely similar. Very underrated, so many number twos but never got a number one. They're all number one in my book.
I think of this song every time I drive past Lodi, Wisconsin. Not much happens there either. Great freakin' song! Also, check out the incredible cover done by Emmylou Harris.
Oh yes. This is how the song SHOULD be done. Makes more sense, considering the story being told. One guitar, one singer/songwriter, one voice. As good as CCR sounds, here, in a small venue, all by his lonesome, Fogerty captures the mood he wrote about. CCR's big sound is a singalong, dance. This is a shut up and listen.
