I try to interpret the Dadaist Austrian entry for Eurovision 2023 “Who the hell is Edgar” and try to explain why Edgar Allen Poe is repeated more often than Rihanna said “Work”, the dig against Spotify and streaming services and references to the modern music industry and the struggling artist.

Love this song, and everyone thinks it's just a joke entry, but the lyrics actually have meaning, this is so unique!

I am actually learning about Edgar Allan Poe in English right now which is really funny considering the song and what it is directly referencing. I completely back up and agree with what you said in this song about him as this is the bulk of what we have been learning in English right now. And also all the stuff about the music industry stuff and how it references the actual world and how women and creatives are placed in it. This is absolutely what I thought when I listened to this for the first time, it is much deeper than the surface has it seem and it is. It is so unique that a song that is packed like a troll entry but it is actually quite deep. This has potential with the televote and the juries at ESC tbh. If this does not qualify with a great performance I would actually be kinda shook. Great analysis as always.

While Iistening to the leaked fragments of the song I though: u ok Austria? Now, I can't stop listening. Lyrics are brilliant satire, music is really good, even guitar licks are there. If they not mess the staging and vocals, the final is guaranteed. Then, either top 10 or bottom 5. Nothing in between.

Also, Poe sounds like "po" which in america is slang for poor.

This performance will be great, IF it works live. If it doesn't work live it could be terrible. I can't figure out how they will stage this. But at least it won't be boring. 😄 It is in the 2nd half of semi 2, so it should qualify.

This! Often the ”pop stars” who just perform the song and entertain on Tiktok etc. Get most of the recognition and payment while ghost producers and especially women behind the production are ignored

I was slightly annoyed when it started with that whiny American valley girl accent. But after that I was pleasantly surprised, the lyrics are rather clever and they sing very well. Genuinely impressed by their voices. The song is nice, fun and upbeat. I think they will be fan favourites at all the preparties :-) Is it the best song this year? Probably not :-) Do I like it and hope they make the final? Absolutely!

Based on lyrics, I think this song could also be about impostor syndrome. Author blames ghost of Poe for writing songs. Especially part "Edgar can't pay my rent for me" is striking.

I think what I love the most about this song is that anyone who speaks German is going to hear the repeated, "Poe. Poe. Poe Poe Poe. Poe." as "Butt. Butt. Butt Butt Butt. Butt." 😆
"Poe" sounds the same as the German word, „Po“ … which is basically German for "Butt".
I'm actually a native English speaker who speaks German as a second language, so I don't know if Germans and Austrians actually hear the chorus as, „Po. Po. Po Po Po. Po.“, or if it registers as the surname of the famous American horror-writer. Which is what _I_ heard the first time [being from the US.]
