@@richardkirkland6805And another one with the cartoon “boing” sound effect! That was my first time seeing those edits, and it caught me off guard and got me laughing!
I still think it's hilarious that the Engine's faces are the smoke box doors, because the image of Gordon just opening his face to scowl at another engine like "YOU WANT TO SAY THAT DISGRACEFUL NONSENSE AGAIN?!" is just... objectively hilarious even if it is cursed.
45:57 on the original video someone said that, in their own headcanon, Gordon is, indeed, Scottish, but learned to use an English accent because it was seen as more classy and proper around the time he was built. I like that idea :D
I do think that you should delete scene where saying, we’re golden open, he Smokebox door and directly look at James, delete that right away. I am scared now.
Having the faces open is both absolutely hilarious and horrifying, seeing that edit of Gordon's face just sent me but imagining that happing in person would cause me to scream.
Guys, stop acting like the engine's faces being smokebox doors is scary. It would be scarier if their faces WEREN'T smokebox doors and they had actual digestive systems behind their mouths! If anything, the engine's faces being smokebox doors is reassuring, because it proves that the engines are, in fact, still engines, and not something with organs and blood vessels tucked away in an engine's smoke box. Far from being cursed, it's a sign that everything is right with the world... or at least with Gordon's physiology. (Incidentally, I don't think the engines would die unless you literally melted down every component. You could take Thomas's smokebox door off and he'd be just fine if you reattached it later and steamed him up again, even if it was decades later.)
4:40 honestly even if you didn’t see the episode where Henry is freed, you definitely saw him in other episodes. its not like he doesn’t show up often.
Your explanation of why Henry is still the same Henry after his crash is of course rational, though I prefer a more flippant explanation, like a train's consciousness being entirely within its smokebox door, meaning Henry's face was just put on a green Black 5 in Crewe (I hate it, I hate it, I hate it).
I *love* it >:) Also your explanation kinda works. I recall there being this big story of a groundbreaking surgery to put someone's head on a new body, so...maybe that can work similarly in the world of Thomas?
I always made the assumption that the character of each engine was a composite/amalgam of its crew and those unique 'personality' traits that all machines seem to pick up over time: the 'real' engine is just a steam train, it's just much easier to tell stories to children about the engine itself and not having to memorize the crew members, who often change over time. So Henry can totally be two different engines and still be the same character if there's continuity in crew. Why not have Henry's old crew operate the 'new' Henry, after all?
No they wanted to kill him just like how he was never going to be rebuilt after his accident but kids wouldn’t stop asking for him so they had to rebuild him
Quick question: we all know Sir Topham Hatt would never scrap any of his engines, but what and when was the closest he ever got to considering the option?
Looking back, I think the reason why "Henry dies in tunnel" is so pervasive, alongside being obvs clickbait, is that it's so shocking and memorable - whereas him being freed in the next episode isn't as memorable. Add to that the scrapyard and how another train was forgotten in a shed and eventually buried by time, and...yeah, 'train dies in tunnel' isn't the only shocking, miserable 'end' in the show.
It's really interesting that this series of vids were originally going to be one long video back when it first began, to then being individual uploads and now one long video. Thomas Debunked as a whole has always been a favourite. Just hearing facts and theories about different aspects of the show has always interested me and it makes for nice conversations with friends.
It’s funny because Sir Topham Hatt is probably the only controller in the series who isn’t an evil dictator who treats his engines like slaves. He’s been shown to respect them, and value them.
Sir Topham Hatt is NOT an evil dictator; Hitler is an evil dictator. Sir Topham Hatt is a fatherly authority figure. And next time I hear someone say "Duh, Sir Topham Hatt is an evil dictator", I'M GONNA PUNCH THAT PERSON!!!
So I have a confession to make. I may have been the root of the whole "Henry died/stayed in the tunnel" misconception. Years ago I was a regular on 4chan and requested the end of the episode be made on a .webm creation thread. I wanted it for YLYL threads because I always thought it was hilarious how the narrator would say "I think he deserved his punishment, don't you?", then the music would get all cheery and exciting and it would cut to Thomas smiling next to the credit roll. Apparently people agreed, because that .webm started popping up everywhere. I had never seen it before then, so now I really think that maybe, just maybe, this could be my terrible, terrible contribution to TTTE history.
Well, the TTTE fandom also has a dumb theory about Henry. Which is that the rebuilt Henry you see after "The Flying Kipper" episode is not the real Henry but in fact, a clone. Most likely because Awdry labelled the original Henry and rebuilt Henry as "Henry I" and "Henry II" respectively
Henry: There's just me and me twin brother Horace. Horace: Hi Henry! Henry: Hi Horace! Yeah I never saw this working, the whole two Henry's theory. Considering that the joke I just made comes from Victor Tanzig who I do enjoy and respect It couldn't have worked, how is Metal Fatigue any different to normal maintenance wear? It makes as much sense as any Time Travel plot would, consistent only to the writer. I honestly had the idea of having the 0-8-0 Hecate be rebuilt after her fateful crash into a SR Z class, my way of looking at it is that as long as a majority of the engine is intact it can be repaired/rebuilt into another similar class. The class Z are 0-8-0 side tank engines, as is Hecate (mainly this is because in a old Sodor/British Railway Stories series I had in mind she had a brother, and while he was built and purchased by another railway, he was very connected to her and so after her crash which was nearly fatal she was purchased and rebuilt a few days after by the head of my railway using a unfinished Z chassis and parts with as much as could be used to make her in a way like Henry)
@@MaminakaMrpaperbagThe 2 Henrys theory in my perspective is actually the phases that Henry goes through. Henry 1 would be his pre-Kipper phase and Henry 2 post that. He's still the same Henry.
The idea James choosing his own red livery is similar to a headcanon I have about Ryan and his lovely dark purple livery. When Ryan was restored at Crovan's Gate Steamworks, the Fat Controller asked Ryan if he wanted to be painted into his GNR Apple Green livery. Ryan was touched, but surprised TFC by asking if instead of having GNR decals on Apple Green livery, he could be painted in purple, his favorite color, with GNR decals. Ryan always loved the color purple, and he couldn't explain why. TFC was surprised, but agreed. I can't help it: I love Purple!
These debunked videos were some of my favorite videos on your channel. My favorite is "Is Sir Topham Hatt evil?" I like how you explain the engine's desires and why the misconception is incorrect. I'm glad we can watch these videos all at once now.
@@Joseph_Drew_III None of them were owned by the Fat Controller's railway. In fact, falsely representing himself as part of the NWR is probably partially why Bulgy is a henhouse now.
Suddenly, I have a headcanon about a Fat Controller/Sir Topham Hatt impersonator doing this to ruin that poor guy’s reputation. It could happen either way
A good idea to bundle them all together into one video. And we can just skip to whichever one we want. A big-ass encyclopedia for correcting any non-fan on the most common misconceptions, facts about an engine's class or siblings, as well as theories/headcanons on minor details.
Sodor seems to be a bit of a tourist destination, and as such the summer Express trains seem to get a bit long. That's probably why Gordon was brought on. If it was just normal traffic then Edward and James would be able to handle it (and James does in fact still occasionally fill in as the backup engine for the Express).
Sorry to say this but the reason why Gordon came was because Henry at the time was a failed engine and couldn't pull the express because of his small Firebox
@@PopCorn-pv8qq And Henry was brought on... why? Likely because of the increased demand for express passenger service. And since Gordon was meant to be Henry's replacement, that means he was brought in for the same reason.
Sodor was undergoing economic development at the time, which was increasing the number of passengers on the railway. Also, the NWR had only recently consolidated out of the preexisting railways on Sodor, none of which had engines optimized for pulling modern express trains across the entire length of the island.
54:50 My theory is that the mastermind behind the theft of Gresley’s plans and thus responsible for building Henry was Sir Vincent Raven, CME of the NER prior to grouping. IRL Raven designed and built a Pacific to compete against Gresley’s A1 (referred to as the A2, not to be confused with later A2s) for adoption by the soon-to-be LNER. Could be that Raven was trying to get a leg up and hired a corporate spy to try and steal Gresley’s plans
Gordon's face popping out like that had me laughing outloud on the train home from work. I'm going to bed now and I'm still giggling. Thank you for that. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
To all those wondering how long Neil and the other 2 S&M engines were on Sodor prior to Skatloey arriving, the Thomas wiki states that they were built in 1861 and arrived on Sodor that very same year.
@@Silvertardis Duncan is canonically confirmed to be a sailor mouth. And who's the actor for the sailor mouth spin doctor Malcolm Tucker? Peter Capaldi. It's PERFECT.
One thing I'd like to add about BoCo, is that his number of D5702 was also used on the two-rail Hornby-Dublo model of the Class 28 / Co-Bo. This was likely the model Wilbert had, and also the one he would have provided to the illustrators.
If you think about it Sir Topham Hatt has gotten out of his way to make sure Sodor is a haven for steam engines seeing by that point in history everyone else were scrapping steam engines on mass in favour diesel engines
15:12 actually there's a simpler explanation. Push-pull engines often had the push-pull gear at both front and rear, there's examples on the GWR (who loved push-pull) of push-pull trains consisting of two carriages, the loco, and then two more carriages. So in Thomas's case, perhaps either he's gotten turned around at point or Annie & Clarabel have been moved into a siding which he could only access from one end, and rather than go find a turntable, his crew just coupled him up facing the carriages. Of course the simplest explanation is the artists not really understanding the source material, but....
1:02:35 I find it rather interesting that Bertram Hatt (the TV series Fat Controller) now sorta has a family tree of his own. With his Great-Grandfather being revealed recently alongside his grandfather (who appeared in "Hero of the Rails"). Sadly after almost 4 decades (25 years after Dowager Hatt's introduction), we still don't know of the existence of Bertram's father and the spouse of Dowager Hatt.
Thanks for reuploading these as one big video. I love the obscure lore touched on in some of these shorts, and it’s nice to have them back again all in one place.
I THINK, if you wanted to make Percy the youngest work, you would have to say he's a old design but built at a later date. Best example of which would be the NER Class E1, with some built by BR in the late 40s (from a design from 1898)
2:48 "Etienne never arrived on Sodor" Actually he did with the other international engines in one shot at the docks. So he was the fastest engine on Sodor at one point.
Yes, but being an electric engine, he wouldn't have been able to move under his own power as there are no overhead power lines at the docks. Looking at the engines at the docks, I think he was pushed by Frieda or pulled by Yong Bao.
@@lukechristmas3951 in the US version of the great race movie, during the starting line scene of the race, the announcer says etienne is a diesel-electric engine. so he should be able to move without the electric wires. but this could just be the american version of the audio and it’s different in other places. it’s also inconsistent with the actual engine he’s based on as everything i’ve found on that engine is that it’s a pure electric
Yeah, but being an electrical engine that runs on overhead wires, he wouldn’t have been able to move under his own power at the docks. It’s likely he was shunted or pulled by one of the under engines.
1:11:21 Actually, imagine if this WAS James! 🤔 There’s something weirdly poetic/ironic about the idea that the engine trying to force Henry out of a situation created by Henry’s vanity over his paint, is the one other engine who becomes famously vain over his paint!
1:07:20 Woah, idea. Thomas was an 0-6-0T from Hudswell Clarke built to the same design as the MSC engines, but was built earlier so he could still be the first engine bought by the newly consolidated NWR. (Despite going to Sodor and helping connect all three lines years before Thomas arrived, Edward was not actually bought from the Furness Railway until after Thomas was purchased, hence his being #2.) Some time before _The Railway Series_ became a thing, Thomas had an accident that necessitated a major rebuild into a new shape that was superficially similar to the LB&SCR E2. _(Oooohh, World War II! WORLD WAR II! THOMAS’ PART IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR ENDED WITH HIM NEEDING EMERGENCY LIFE-SAVING SURGERY! IT ALL FITS!)_ When Reginald Payne was hired to illustrate the first book to have Thomas in it, he misunderstood the information provided to him and illustrated Thomas as an actual E2, which stuck. Fortunately for Thomas, most of the children who come to visit him don’t know the difference. The original wooden toy of Thomas was made by Wilbert based on Thomas’ appearance before his rebuild.
I remember the debate on patreon how these should be either shorts or long form. I voted for long form and I am so glad they are back like this. Shorts just don't do it for me, muh rather sit down with a cup of tea and watch once a week rather than a minute every day or whatever. Good stuff Tug.
I don't know if I actually commented this on the original video about ages in Thomas, but I find it weird that so many fans DON'T know that Thomas is really old, as in the RWS and presumably the model series, Thomas and Edward were the first standard gauge engines on the island, and were used to help lay and develop the main line prior to any of the others arriving. Of course other engines had been built prior to the standard gauge railroads being established on Sodor, but they by that fact HAVE to be very old.
I love Thomas Debunked! Thomas Debunked videos are always so interessting. I'm glad they are back on UA-cam. I actuly forgot some of the facts in some of these videos so some of them were new to me again. Amazing video! Hope you have a great day!
One thing you forgot about Henry’s Tunnel: It was actually built by the Sodor And Mainland Railway, but collapsed due to inadequate conditions. The newly formed NWR rebuilt the tunnel while creating a new one.
Imagine if the people who wrote clickbait articles actually watched the show. There are plenty of fucked-up things in Thomas & Friends without having to read too deep into it. That's why I like TomSka's Thomas video so much; he starts out with the obvious "Henry died in the tunnel" sensationalism, only to point out that he was let out in the next episode.
And applying their narrow humanistic values to non-humans whom wouldn’t share our same values. Engines would perceive passage of time differently than we do.
@@rayvenkman2087 Yea, I dont like how people like to anthropomorphise the characters too much. Alot of modern entertainment relies too heavily on excessive anthropomorphism. Christianity is the biggest example. Conservatives say humanism is the oppoite of the Bible, yet , the way humans self pedestalize in Christian perspectives, I say Christianity is theological humanism.
The reason Emily has a Scottish accent is because Stirling is a place heavily associated with Scotland, but honestly, anyone outside of the UK wouldn't be familiar with that
Love theses Debunked shorts. They were terrific and kept us interested in your channel. They were fun to learn about the different topics relating to Thomas and Friends. ❤❤ They truly will be missed but at the same time your Tug's train shorts are really good.
The funicular railway in your footage is in Folkestone Kent UK. I used to ride it all the time as a child. Sadly it has shut down in the last 5 years. Not far from there is the Romney Hythe and dymchurch railway. A narrow gauge main line
Here's my theory for Henry following the Flying Kyper incident: When he was sent to Crewe, instead of fixing up his old body, the workers used the train equivalent of a sedative and moved his faceplate/brain(?) to a new body and sent his old body to be scrapped since it was nothing more than an empty shell that was practically beyond repair
6:36 - Thomas and Gordon aging by dictation of their build dates would have been indifferent ultimately to where they stood in terms of hierarchy, and how they learn from the obstacles placed upon them. Wilbert Awdry essentially defined the characterisations of the engines in this way. 30:21 - My take for Oliver, which in fact ties into my show pitch plans for 'Thomas & Friends' moving forward, is that he is indeed not numbered 1436, but instead fellow 1400 class loco 1424. 1424, according to a book I have that details the basis, was withdrawn at the close of 1963, having rapped up the reported highest service mileage for the class. It spent the bulk of its working life based out of Gloucester, having initially worked in Wales. Given how Wilbert Awdry writes Oliver as a plucked but overconfident character, I find the juxtaposition a perfect one. 43:47 - Skarloey and Rheneas having Welsh accents could be explained away by their honouring respect for their Welsh twins by adopting their accents. Furthermore, Skarloey gaining a deep voice could be explained away by the knowledge given to us through Wilbert Awdry's Sodor history lecture notes. At one time, so the notes state, Skarloey was used to haul standard-gauge wagons for the Crovan's Gate Mining Company, being mounted on a custom-built special haulage wagon for the task. He hauled wagons twice his size at slow speed to Kirk Ronan harbour, and the extra effort from doing this would have caused him to make drawn-out pants, which would have opened up his vocal cords over time, giving him an unusually deeper sound for a little engine. 55:51 - Henry being heavily modified with LMS parts as opposed to being scrapped and replaced with a new engine is an interesting concept, and it makes fair sense as well. With that said, I think it likely Henry's mind-set would have been transferred to a Black 5 engine under construction; costs would have been more stabilised long-term with a standard engine. Regards, Samuel Farris.
Skarloey and Rheneas are named after places their railway goes to. I'm sure that, in the Railway Series continuity, characters, and pronunciation, many an engine arriving at Knapford Junction and having the opportunity to have a conversation with Thomas, would think that here it was the other way around, and the branch line's terminus at Ffarquhar is named after the little blue Ffarquhar who pulls trains to it.
I picture the faces mount onto the smokebox door and can be dismounted, So seeing a scrapped engine doesn't mean he's dead.. the face (and personality) could be transplanted onto another loco with the same size door. Haven't given any consideration if they would just go crosseyed and unconcious, Imagine retiring Thomas and mounting his face onto the station waitingroom wall! Edit: also this would explain Henry.
That woukd be terrifying. You'te just waiting for a train then look up and see a face looking at you and saying, "Kill me." Then Sir Toppam says, "Later."
gotta wonder how that would work with some characters, as in the railway series not all of the characters have the iconic gray faceplates. would that still work for someone like boco or george? or would it just be a part of their paneling that can't be removed properly.
So, one other thing with Henry's rebuild, it makes sense that he came back as a 5MT "Black Five" due to _where_ he was rebuilt. Crewe was the main steamworks for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, which was the primary operator of the 5MT, so Crewe was specifically tooled to build that class of locomotive which, as a 4-6-0 "Ten Wheeler" design, is the closest thing the LMS had to Henry's design. Obviously a LOT had to be rebuilt, but due to the severity of the crash Henry would have needed a total overhaul anyway, and probably would have been written off if he was working for any other railway - but the Fat Controller takes care of his engines, even if he can be a little hot-headed and quick to jump to conclusions.
this was a great random video that came across my page. I had a great laugh at 2 sections, the first was that the faceplates were the doors for the smoke boxes, and the 2nd was the scene you made with Gordon having a scotish accent, swearing at percy and casually pulling away lmao. Otherwise i really enjoyed your theory/debunked video and your thoughts on it, having pretty much grown up with all the versions of Thomas and Friends. (Books, TV/Movies and CGI)

48:00-48:56 So you mean to tell me that the only reason Awdry had Thomas nearly commit mass homicide was thanks to the artist’s mistake from almost a decade earlier. I guess we have Payne to thank for the countless “Look what you’ve done to our breakfast” memes and remixes. Domino effects are fickle things, huh?
So many things to comment on… Honestly, I don’t mind the smokebox door thing, I actually think it’s a bit funny. Really only works with the Spong/Edwards illustrations, though. The 652 Scottish Twins was my absolute fave. I feel that the 812 in quotations was a subtle wink from Awdry, hinting to this technical fact. Guantleted tracks are so interesting! I wonder if anyone’s done it in model form…🤔 41:42 This makes me want to get a Bachmann Thomas and just paint him LBSC black… with a very p’d off expression 😂 The possibilities for OG Thomas are amazing, but I’m sticking with the J50 (it’s almost done, btw) In my headcanon, the Austerity Engine is named Christopher, but he just goes by Chris, and he’s painted red with blue lining, an inverse of Wilbert’s. And it is so interesting to see all these background engines in the early days. I can see someone making the W&S 0-6-0 from a Hornby B2 Peckett. Like I said, so much to talk about.
The red engine in the first book looks a bit like the Midland Railway's 2501s/2511s, which would've been getting withdrawn around the time Thomas and Edward were sent over. So maybe Topham asked for an engine, and they sent them one they were withdrawing and didn't need anymore. Whether it worked out and we just never see it again or it was sent back to meet its fate, who knows.

I know my comment is unrelated
oh no...
I *love* it >:)
Also your explanation kinda works.
I love the history of Henry's Tunnel, Sir Topham Hatt blocked his main line just to teach Henry a lesson. Don't mess with the Fat Hatts.
No they wanted to kill him just like how he was never going to be rebuilt after his accident but kids wouldn’t stop asking for him so they had to rebuild him
Sad to see Thomas Debunked go, but it was fun riding the rails with this series while it lasted. Looking forward to the next video!
Why no US dub at any point?
53:52 I can agree with your theory of Henry being a 4-6-0 all his life instead of a 4-6-2. It would add to the story that his firebox is too small.
25:57 - To be fair, Hiro says he's " _One of_ the first engines... " So Glynn could've been _the_ first (in the CG canon, anyway).
Quick question: we all know Sir Topham Hatt would never scrap any of his engines, but what and when was the closest he ever got to considering the option?
I would say Henry after the Kipper crash. He could of been pressured by the board of directors to scrap Henry instead of rebuilding him at Crew.
I'd say it was the whole Donald/Douglass fiasco. He was constantly debating which one to keep and which one to get rid of.
Scuffy in the show, but the RWS,like the comment mentioning above me, Donald and Douglas.
Also maybe Oliver.

Very funny hehehheheheheehhehhehehehe

Nah, As a kid I thought he stayed there for many episodes, since i never saw the next episode until much later
You're not wrong, he Isn't just in there for a day, it is at least a few months given how stiff he is when he is fired up after being let out.
I love how the original idea of Thomas Debunked to it be a compilation, and now it is a compilation. How convenient
*Sidious voice* It's ironic.

Sir Topham Hatt is a lot of things:
Clumsy; at times.
Out of shape; maybe.
Absent minded; probably.
Bald; definitely.
Evil; ABSOLUTELY NOT.
I ultimately can’t agree with that one. Bulgy, Bolstrode, Sir Handel… All of them and more were mistreated.

@@PopCorn-pv8qq
And Henry was brought on... why? Likely because of the increased demand for express passenger service. And since Gordon was meant to be Henry's replacement, that means he was brought in for the same reason.
Oh ok

Does anyone else just love the sound of Conner passing spencer

OH GOD YOUR RIGHT
Yes, but being an electric engine, he wouldn't have been able to move under his own power as there are no overhead power lines at the docks.
Etienne was not on the same ship as the other international engines.
Yeah, but being an electrical engine that runs on overhead wires, he wouldn’t have been able to move under his own power at the docks. It’s likely he was shunted or pulled by one of the under engines.

There’s something weirdly poetic/ironic about the idea that the engine trying to force Henry out of a situation created by Henry’s vanity over his paint, is the one other engine who becomes famously vain over his paint!
Not a bad headcanon. I like it.

Good stuff Tug.
I'd still like to see that Photoshopped Henry deal from 56:26 as a real model, that would lead to an interesting Tugs Trains.
Scottish Gordon sounds like an awesome idea

It was actually built by the Sodor And Mainland Railway, but collapsed due to inadequate conditions. The newly formed NWR rebuilt the tunnel while creating a new one.

The funicular railway in your footage is in Folkestone Kent UK. I used to ride it all the time as a child. Sadly it has shut down in the last 5 years. Not far from there is the Romney Hythe and dymchurch railway. A narrow gauge main line
Here's my theory for Henry following the Flying Kyper incident:
When he was sent to Crewe, instead of fixing up his old body, the workers used the train equivalent of a sedative and moved his faceplate/brain(?) to a new body and sent his old body to be scrapped since it was nothing more than an empty shell that was practically beyond repair
So inverted facial surgery??? (I might be saying it wrong)
To me the idea of their faces opening in the cgi sounds hilarious and would be flcool to see lol
5:47 is my favourite part in Thomas Debunk
I still like the model series interpretation of Gordon's hill, I like more complicated things instead of "a straight line"
I've been wanting to re-watch these for a while now.
Edit: also this would explain Henry.

gotta wonder how that would work with some characters, as in the railway series not all of the characters have the iconic gray faceplates. would that still work for someone like boco or george? or would it just be a part of their paneling that can't be removed properly.
5:55 For Thomas & Friends, that would be the ultimate jumpscare!
I'm so happy that all these are back up! Keep up the great work, Tug!
