  • We start with bare wool and end up with a sweater! It's a fun but long process but I'm happy to share all the steps from dyeing the wool, prepping the fiber, spinning it into yarn and knitting it to the final sweater.

Thank you for showing the entire dye-to-spin-to-sweater process!
I only just started learning to spin in August and my comfort zone seems to be lace weight yarn, which is wonderful because my favourite thing to do is to knit lace. When I told a friend of mine to whom I’d turned for advice when I considered diving down the rabbit hole of spinning, she laughed: “Figured you would!”.
I can’t wait to have enough yarn to start on the project I’ve got in mind for the yarn I’m working on. I’ve just plied my first ever bobbin and I’m so excited! I’m taking pictures and snippets of video to edit into a video that I want to send to my friend (I’m based in Europe and she lives in Australia).
Your sweater looks gorgeous! The fact you decided to stripe it is exactly what my grandmother taught me to do. She was very frugal but there was one thing she didn’t ever compromise on: yarn quality. That meant using up all her odds and ends, and this in turn meant striping as well as taking apart old knitted pieces to use in new projects. She was always wearing what we’d affectionately call “Grandma’s soccer sweaters” that would be a combination of colours in the same gauge of yarn. She’d always knit the sleeves simultaneously, and she’d always have the two front panels going at the sale time as the back to ensure her stripes would match. She rarely used a commercial pattern, preferring frequent fittings to something someone else thought would give the right size and shape. She’d only refer to a pattern book or magazine for fancy stitches, colourwork or cabling. Every time I knit a sweater I feel like a bit of a cheat because of Grandma amazing skill at dreaming up a pattern: you could tell her what you wanted and she’d deliver.
    Happy spinning and knitting!
