    I had been overweight for years in response (almost retaliation) to struggles with eating disorders as a young child. But two summers ago I lost 30 lbs unintentionally and I was almost unaware of it until I noticed clothes looked different on me. I wasn't expecting to make a difference, because I was already following all the advice: only eating fresh, non-processed foods, focusing on vegetables, walking and hiking a lot. I'm still trying to figure out how it happened, but the top two factors were 1) starting a warehouse job that dramatically increased my level of activity and muscle and 2) starting intermittent fasting for digestive health. I refuse to ever start calorie counting again because that took over my mentality as a child. Now I am finding youtubers like you who are promoting a more holistic look at health, and improving relationship with food and exercise. Thank you for uploading.

    I'm not as lean as Abby, but I lost 50lbs and my big tip is just don't eat out... it's too hard to guess calories from restaurants. Even if you pick the healthier option, it seems silly to pay $15 for such few calories (poor value).
    Pick your favourite foods, get the hang of using spices (no calories in spices), mix them together, keep your meals simple, and measure everything.
    It sounds like it sucks, but it wasn't bad at all, and very worth it.

      If you use a weight loss app that counts calories like Lose It they have the verified amount of calories form different restaurants. Also a lot of restaurants put the amount on their menus.

      Honestly, my rule for eating out- because it's ok to do it every once in a while, and balance is a huge key to sustainability- is that I only ever eat half of what I order. That way, even if you're eating a higher calorie meal than usual, you're not going way overboard. Plus there's research that shows that shocking your body by eating more calories than usual (within reason, of course) every once in a while will cause your body to get out of its "I'm 'starving' so I'm going to hold on to as much fat & calories as I can" stage and can actually help you lose more weight and fat long term.

      If you're an athlete level fitness person, that's what everyone is doing. For instance lift and then run. Or lift and then hit the heavy bag for 45 minutes. If you're a beginner or even an an average person still losing weight, you won't be doing that much. But it's not a shocking level of activity (in my opinion). Don't let it discourage you though, once you get to that level, it's what you'll almost have to do to push your body since it'll be so fit. You will get there if you train hard.

This has to be one of my favorite videos because feel like i would do the EXACT same thing you said you would do about falling off track. I would go hard in the gym whenever i would come but then i would stop and eat more. I could maintain weight for the most part but then i would never lose the weight i really wanted. This video makes so MUCH sense!! GAME CHANGER!!!

    You look amazing!!! Specifically after cardio at 10:23. I got my boobs done (several times, unfortunately) and yours are looking amazing on your frame. Not to be creepy or anything ;) just having gone through the changes associated with that surgery myself, I wanted to give you a quick shout out that you are looking awesome.
    I purchased one of your plans about 2 years ago (I think), and it’s still one of my favorite workout plans to go to. This video is persuading me to hop on this plan too. Thank you for your honesty and content. (Edited to include the following): As I kept watching and you got into your full workout, I feel compelled to tell you that of all the fitness people I follow on UA-cam (and there are a lot), your content is always actually applicable. Meaning, you show exercises and form and give such great directions that you are one of the very few UA-cam creators whose content I can actually apply in the gym without looking up other references for understanding form and purpose of the exercise. It is so helpful!

    Found this channel pretty early into my weight loss journey and this is all great to know! I gained 10lbs in self isolation and it shocked me into place, because even as a 6'2 trans guy 229 is too much, and I've deciding I'm losing weight. I cant calorie count because it leads to unhealthy habits for me, but I'm going pretty crazy on the cardio and training myself to eat intuitively. Less than a week in but I cant wait to keep watching this channel along the way. My goal is to lose 50lbs by next year but even losing 30 by then if that's what my body can handle I'll be skinnier than I've been in years

    Woah. So a few years back I was on a similar journey. Lost a bunch of weight, started looking at Bikini competitions, and made sure to break down my macros. I felt amazing and (yes, sometimes very hungry - looking back I went a tiny bit too far with the deficit). But the breakdown you used in this video for food consumption was literally what I did... And.... regarded as psychopathic by my surrounding colleagues. This got so bad that at a certain point I had comments from men and women alike that stated I wasn't normal looking, no woman should look like this, and that I was giving young girls unrealistic body expectations by posting photos of myself. For reference I was at a 10% body fat range, and very much within a healthy weight for my age and gender.
    The feedback though broke me. And it verged on bullying. Looking back now I realize I was on the right track, and I have let people who surround me influence a huge chunk of my life in the most destructive way possible. I am soo excited to jump back on this journey with love and empathy for myself. I'm thankful for the growth I've gone through as a young woman, to make me realize I could up my overall caloric intact, and take things a lot slower than what I was during by early teens. This excited the hell out of me. Thank you!

    Finally someone who understands me! I've had 20lbs to lose for 4 years. 😬 What bothers me the most is that I was skinny and fit for most of my life. Even after my first 3 babies. But this time it's been SO hard (after my 4th). I totally did the going too extreme, then stopping, then doing it again. I realized I ended up having a bit of an eating disorder with binge eating because I'd deprive myself, and just an unhealthy relationship with food in general. I'm actually just as fit as always in regards to how much I lift and run. Just with 20 extra pounds. 😔 I've also noticed when I started being better at working out harder I'm hungrier and then eat more. I don't remember this happening before when I lost weight. At least it didn't last longer than a couple days. I actually don't remember it being hard at all before to lose weight. I just tried to eat relatively well and exercised regularly. I have tried working on just diet but it's hard to be 100% so now I'm trying to eat mostly well (and watching my calories) and adding in cardio and weights and we'll see if I finally get there. I think my problem too is if I don't see results quickly I get discouraged thinking I'm doing something wrong and I stop. Good luck to everyone on their health and fitness goals!

I simply was glad to see a girl with fair skin not feeling like she has to be fake tanned. I was teased a lot as a child for my fair skin and freckles. It made me want to always wear pants to hide it and then fake tan. Im just glad to see othee girls with confidence not feeling like they need to do that. You made it about race. I cannot deal with the concept of counting calories. Too much work for me. I try to keep in mind the nutrition concept of the plate being 1/4 lean protein, 1/4 complex carbohydrate and 1/2 vegetables. Portion control each meal and not using added sugar. Also snacks include a veggie or fruit and a protein. That's the only way I've ever been able to lose weight.

      I know you posted this a year ago so you've probably figured this out, but if anyone else out there is looking for suggestions: a bosu ball instead of a chair is the solution. Each bounce counts as one step (on every fitness tracking device I've ever owned!!), so when I'm on the phone or reading my monitor, I bounce away and it increases my NEAT.
      Or, petition for a standing desk. This is probably the most healthy option!!

    • @hillaryfarley4186
      @hillaryfarley4186 6 років тому +145

      I completely disagree. Protein is the foundation for muscle growth and repair to say the least. Our bodies use protein to do a thousand essential things. I think Abby has more than one video on the subject.

    • @Charelhuisman
      @Charelhuisman 6 років тому +48

      Hillary Farley Ive built alot of muscle with my main focus being complex carbs and yes high carb meals tend to contain a good amount of protein, then you have your legumes, beans, nuts and veggies, fruits etc trust me if you focus on your micro nutrients, your macros nutrients will fall into place.

    • @embladefarfalla4191
      @embladefarfalla4191 6 років тому +51

      Hillary Farley Of course you need protein, but if you look at any scientific study you'll see that the amount that is popular to eat right now is highly exaggerated. I know so many people who think that 200g a day is a minimum, when about half of that is what you need to build muscle. And of course if you try to eat 200g protein that will add calories to your day. I actually build more muscle when I clean bulk with about 100g protein a day and mainly complex carbs, fruits and veggies, than I used to do when I ate huge amounts of protein.

    • @hillaryfarley4186
      @hillaryfarley4186 6 років тому +15

      Embla De Farfalla I think then that what we mean by "important" is different. I mean that it's important enough to eat at least 100 g a day. In my experience, most people don't understand protein even THAT well. Protein does take effort when you've been raised to compensate with carbs... or starve for weight loss. (read: me)

    Hey Abby! I've been following your videos for a while, and I really like your mentality on not being too restrictive, or obsessive but cutting the BS at the same time. :D Could you show what a day in your life looks like, or what would you suggest for us with a 9-5, 8-4 whatever job?
    I'm especially thinking about office jobs, where you sit all day, but you still get mentally exhausted. Cause I feel like even when I get myself to go the gym all I want to do is power walk on a treadmill, listen to loud music and relieve stress so I make sure I won't go off on anyone that day. :"D But this would take like 1 hour, and it won't give me the best result... So how would you schedule, and what type of work out for when you are mentally exhausted, and how would you make that efficient?

    I'm really struggling at the moment. I've been going to the gym for 2 years but I'm really 'skinny fat'. All on my stomach. I know there's muscle there it's just removing the layer of fat on top. I have no problem dieting, I love dieting but I lose the weight every where else

    Hey Abby I noticed your collarbones also straightened out in your before vs after pictures. Did you do anything in particular or is this just a difference in posture?

    The biggest factor is when you eat. I really started to make breakthroughs when I started delaying my first meal of the day. It's really effective. You end up eating much less overall.

      I do the same. It's called intermittent fasting. My first meal is usually around noon. So I have a window where I fast for 16 hours (sometimes more) and have about an 8 hour window where I eat. I've lost weight, feel more energized, and I feel like my focus and clarity have improved.
