Such a skilled samurai, training hard enough to jump off the very wind itself! Could see him fighting off a bunch of tiny lil ninjas any time. Such a cool and detailed mini sprite!
The clarity you can achieve with movements that are *that* complicated on such a small-scale sprite is quite amazing. Would love you to come back to this one in the future, there's much to explore.
This is seriously impressive and as someone new to pixel art, a great reference piece. The hardest thing for me is learning how to convey more detail with fewer pixels, and this video is about as good as it gets with that!
Most of the clarity with small psirtes like comes more from our own minds. As long as we have those references such as hands, feet etc, we immediately understand this sprite is a person. Similar to how we even recognise a 4x4 pixel "circle" as a circle.
This is so inspiring to me, please continue this samurai pixel art project! Other things you could give a shot spriting are walking up/down steps, talking, dancing, opening a door, giving the samurai animations for when the player has been AFK for a while, eating, drinking, etc! :)
@@BJGpixel I think if you had the character sheathe and unsheathe the katana would be an incredible transition. Like why standing still and while running. I am not sure how difficult that would be to do though.
Samurai action platformer game with these sprites would be siiiiiiiiick!!!! Also I wish I could get ready in the morning by just jumping and spinning, would be really convenient, someone smarter than me needs to make that a thing :'D Thanks for sharing Brandon!!!
I mean…. Are you game maker who isnt skilled in design ? Cause im someone who loves art and design but im mot good in coding or having ideas for game mechanics
If you return, adding run/jump animations for the armored version (or versions, if you make other armor designs) might be a good idea. Could be neat to see how the armor affects his movement.
Wow! you really captured the essence of the spin and even the illusion that the armor pieces were in physical space around the samurai. If you ever want to build a full game based off of this character (or any of your other characters for that matter) hit me up!
I have been pixelling for over a decade and I just wanted to say that every single video you upload is really full of awesome pixel art technique and amazing presentation. Hope you will keep making videos!
Aaah more of that character!! The double jump is so nice 4:56 Integration of these large cellsize works into ("with"?) backgrounds could be something interesting too 9:00 Great video!
Ok i was already amazed for the most part of the video, but the transformation one? 200% more!!! This was amazing, omg. Great job. For a very small pice nothing was confused about it
That armour transformation looks so cool! It's really neat just seeing the rotation animation loop indefinitely too. And the armour pieces coming together makes me think a game around a samurai with magnetic armour would be pretty neat! 😁 As others have said, I think it'd be really cool to see this become a recurring project you come back to from time to time! It feels like you're playing off some of the limits of pixel art and that's really neat 👾 (And there's lots to learn here, haha!)
Thanks! I like the idea of it being magnetic; it'd be fun to come up with some in-world reasons to explain/justify the transformation! :D Definitely gonna have to explore some more; its really fun working out how to convey these things with such a small scale ✨
@@CKTDanny haha great one to start with! Actually I haven't seen it, and I also don't know anything about how it was received etc - but I think that's the right way to go into it - just seems like a fun concept either way! 🦇🥷
Your content is very soothing. As a crap pixel artist myself (I live more on the programming side of things), I get a lot of inspiration for things to make imagining your art driving them. I really like the ultra-minimal pixel art especially because it really gets to the heart of readability and conveyance as each individual element becomes more abstract (i.e. one or two squares)
Thanks! This video inspired me to work more on a pico 8 game! I was having trouble making small cute character sprites, but seeing how you did really helps out! Thanks!
When the Samurai lands, he feels too light - try adding another / revising a frame to add a little weight, maybe making his bun flop down them up again or moving his head down another pixel. Great work, this taught me a lot!
Your confusion about the word _further_ is that there are actually two different but similar words: _Further_ and _farther._ The word _farther_ refers to distance, and the word _further_ refers to extent. So while they cannot get "farther inward," assuming that this would actually get the armor closer relative to the position of the object toward which it's moving, they _can_ get "further" inward, which just means "inward to a greater extent."
i love that spinning motion for the armor being put on! the run could use some work. the back leg should come forward more on frames 2 and 5. they look as though they're dragging behind a bit instead of coming forward naturally. great video as usual though. i always love how you explain your process!
Hey Brandon! I know you don't make games, but I've been watching a couple of gamejam UA-camrs and I think it would be awesome to see you challenge a bunch of them to make a game using a style and sprite set of your making. It could be a really cool video to see you make an awesome style set and see them try to make a small. short game out of it :D
I think that you could justify the start of the double jump by making dust particles with low alpha follow the samurai when he goes in the air for the first jump(you know what I mean)
the animations are so smooth and satisfactory, i want to animate like that!. Also, you should post the assets so people can use them! (with crediting obviously)
Hi Brandon, love your work and your videos. 😁 These small animations are fun (and hard!) to do. Your jump and double jump animations look awesome! I like the bounciness and especially the ripple effect. Very fantasy zen monk-like. I did notice that the running animations here lack a frame where the feet are in the center of the body, which seems to reduce the feeling of movement passing from out in front to back behind. If you examine the distance between the feet pixels you’ll maybe see what I mean - they stay in the outermost areas only and skip over the center. If you do another video with little guy that could maybe be altered if you feel it needs it. Also, that samurai dude needs a little black cat! =^_^=
Oh, this is so nice! I am learning quite a lot! Hm, for next one could you do another mock up, but with magical girl character? Like Sailor Moon or Card Captor Sakura but something original. Would be neat to see what you can come up with. Double Like!! ^^b
You've beautifully animated the movement of armor pieces - they really look like popping out from behind the character! Also I noticed how greatly you used the principles of animation - even though the sprite is very small, it had the squashing, anticipation and easing. Great job! I'm annoyed a bit by Photoshop animation that whenever I want to add a layer to the 1st frame (or turn an existing one visible), I have to manually turn it off for all the other frames. Do you know if there is a way to turn off this behaviour? (does it even bother you as well? :D)
Thanks so much dude! And yeah I know exactly what you mean about the timeline 😅 I'm not sure it can be changed, but to be honest it doesn't really bother me because I know to expect that behaviour, and sometimes I use it to my advantage. Sometimes if I want to make adjustments to the first frame, I'll duplicate the first frame so it becomes frame 2, make the edits there, and then delete the original frame 1. Hope that helps!
Hello Bradon James! Could you make an video about the classic Nokia 3310 aesthetic games? The screen resolution is 48x84p and it have one of the classic games ever, Snake! Also, my favorite is Space Impact, a simple space shooter with beautiful graphics that remminds me kirby's dreamland on game boy.
I'm right now thinking how these animations could be used in a game my favorite idea for now is a platformer with a focus on combat that makes the character shoot in one direction when attacking and having with the armor a devil trigger type of transformation that let's you use stuff like an onis claw and fire breathing through spitting out burning alcohol.
The jump and transform looks smooth, but I think the walking animation lacks some frames in the middle of the extremes. It kinda looks like one leg always is behind, while the other one always is at front.
Such a skilled samurai, training hard enough to jump off the very wind itself!

he could slay literally hundreds of lemmings

The running animations at the end make it look like the katana one is chasing the other and that's pretty funny, great work!
Fascinating how much life you can bring into a characters of this tiny size!
You've captured so much detail into such a small sprite. Just goes to show a lot can be done with these tiny squares.
These animations are really satisfying. It's incredibly impress how animated such a small sprite can be!
yes, please do more. this is perfect for a game makers who aren't as skilled in design.
