My grandfather used to tell me stories of going up to Mendota with his uncle. Before the large reels became popular they would grab the line and run with it in order to bring up the fish. They would have a big group of people and once everyone caught their limit they would take them to my great great aunts house and spend hours filleting perch.

I have a swish rod but never used it. They used sticks with line they could roll up on Big Green Lake and after that my dad bought a couple swish rods. I could use one on Mendota but don't really ice fish because I don't keep fish around Madison much.
