Christopher Nolan was once, in all praise of Hyote van Hyotema for his dedication to the work. He said Hyotema would carry large IMAX cameras on his shoulder to shoot the scene, so that he could get a better angle of the scenes. Both Cinematography, and VFX is top- notch in Nope.

Wow you can see the high quality craft with the clouds, the night and the monkey things. They combined some physical effect with the technology, experimenting and trying to bring the best results.. Then many other movies use only the easy way, like technology used to make the work faster, without a critical thinking behind.
I think that movies from directors who do these things are the ones who will be remembered for a long time, whereas many others will last only few years before they'll be considered old.

btw. If anyone is curious, there's the documentary series Night on Earth on Netflix that shows just how far actual nighttime cinematography has gotten lately. There are shots there that make a moonlit night look like high noon. Though I guess those cameras kind of top out at 1080p so I think Peele went with the day for night approach he did just to keep the resolution as high as possible.
And by faking it, Hoyte can stop down the lens for deep focus photography. Shooting with High ISO cameras and lenses at 0.7, you otherwise start to have trouble keeping things in focus.
I remember filming a feature on a 7D with lenses that could go down to f1.2 and f1.8. The director really wanted shots with the shallowest depth of field possible and I often had to ask him which eye he wanted in focus, as the 50 mm and 85 mm had such razor thin depth of field that that question (borrowed from a story I heard on the making of material of the first TRON) was a valid concern. Now imagine actual nighttime shooting with sensors as big as 5 perf or even 15 perf 70mm film... Even if you could get a usable image at ISO 25600 and T2.8 lenses at night... most of the image would be so out of focus the minute you focus on something in the foreground that you can almost not recognize where it is filmed.
So Day for Night continues to have its place in the filmmaking toolbox. :)
