But thats exactly what her relationship with Odysseus was, she didnt love him as a friend. Of course, he was the man she loved most, but you could not equate it to the love one has for their friends yk. The gods used their heroes as toys, they controlled them, made them fight their monsters and showed them off for their own pleasure. Athena was no different, she cared only for her reputation and how Odysseus made her look. And its sad because youre right, if Athena had not come it wouldve spared Odysseus like 10 years perhaps. Mortal heroes never meant much to the gods, they played them like chess pieces.
Took me a while to see this comment, but yes, 100,000% Athena did not help Odysseus and instead nearly dragged him and his crew to complete annihilation. I am glad more people are seeing that it would have been stupid if she had gotten her way, and they had listened to her words.
You are right, but not in the cyclops part, there werent any more cyclops in the original story, the pressence in the video should be a god (Poseidon) who protects the cyclops because they are his sons. But for the rest you are 100% right.
Surely killing the cyclops would prove to be difficult and probably cost him some more comrades. I believe that the part where Odysseus reveals his name wasn't really influenced by Athena. It was clearly his ego. If you make that assumption then Athena was right, he was a threat and proved to be. Also, @joseangelbravogallego9363 there were more cyclops in the story just not exactly near him. Big creatures their voices echoed across the island
Every time I feel stupid, I listen to this song and tell myself that at least I didn’t give out my address, social security number, credit card, IP address, and wifi password to a cyclops.
The best part of "Who hurts you" sequence for me is not the fact that there is a who-knows-how-many-more cyclops, but rather the fact then they are MUCH bigger then Polyphemus. Like, one of them has his only EYE almost as big as Polyphemus whole head.

That would have been suicide, Athena was only looking for herself and her prestige, which is what all greek gods did, they weren't how a God is supposed to be, a REAL mentor, someone how taught morals and righteousness and cared for his people, someone who were truly wise and would teach true wisdom, someone who wasn't so selfish and proud and cared not only for himself and satisfying his whims, that's why I don't consider this gods true gods in their world and moment so to speak where they are considered as such because they don't have what a true god would have to have to be a god, and mercy would be part of that wisdom, if people where really merciful and loved each other and cared for morals and what is really good even in our world and time (or if they would have done that in the past too) there would be no wars, no more stupid bloodshed, war in itself is foolishness, it's not wise, that's why the fact that Athena is both goddess of wisdom AND war (being a lot more strategical, smart and cold-thinking than Ares who would be hot-headed and basically be like a volcano) is jarring and questioning at best

ANOTHER ABSOLUTE BANGER OF AN ANIMATIC. I has chills, literal chills. Especially with the eye close up, Polyphemus smiling and Odysseus taking Polites’ headband. But also the transition to Athena was smooth as hell
Can we discuss Athena's exclamation of "Don't" for a second? She knows exactly what he's about to do and knows, or at least has a good idea, of what will happen by giving his name. She even reaches out to try and stop him. She is trying to save him from more blood being on his hands. She tells him to turn off his emotions so that he has a higher xhance of winning without losing anyone he cares about. Athena, with the few words she says here, truly shows that she does care for Odysseus. She knows how dangerous the cyclops is alive. It's not that she wanted more bloodshed, but rather, she wanted to save more by ending the one. The singing in the song is phenomenal and we can feel the pain, fear, rage, sympathy, etc just everything. Truly a magnificent piece. The animation of is is shown off extremely well too.
Maybe so, but you also got to realize that she wanted him to go back and fight when he just saw there were more than just the one cyclops. Plus, Odysseus was just ready to leave, her showing up and telling him to go back just kinda set him off. Not saying him giving away his name and homeland wasn't stupid, but him killing the cyclops would not have done anything but put him in more danger.
Counterpoint; A blind cyclops is capable of fuck all as a threat... From a distance. Going back to finish the job was actively more of a threat to Odysseus and his crew than just leaving him be at that point, Athena was about to get them killed XD

Something I just noticed on this animatic that applies to all of them is the difference between the scenes in Odysseus’ head versus the real world, in his mind he is always highlighted in light grays and whites but in reality he is alway framed with dark grays. This shows how in his head he is the morally correct person but in the real world everything of far more complex. This is the kind of stuff that always floors me when I watch Wolfy’s content! given what happens in ruthlessness. i like to think that the cyclops isn't talking to his kin, but his father. the coldness of the reply when he says nobody hurt him, portrays a parents disappointment that their child won't tell them what really happend. the despair in the cyclops when he says don't go and not just point around him and say them. means whoever is speaking to him, isn't fully there.
Even I could have told you that was a bad idea though lol. Surely a king known for war and wisdom could think it out Hey maybe don't make enemies who know your name and give them where you live!!
@gheata_playz874 They were both stupid, but Ody was stupid second, he was pushed into it by Athena not reading the room enough to see Ody's compromised
well athena never told him to give his whole identity to the cyclops, she was telling him to end the cyclops JUST to avoid grudges like poseidon from happening
The smile at the end omg.. it really shows that Polyphemus now has a chance to get his revenge by calling Poseidon and that despite being blind he has a chance at getting back at him
Oh god, Polyphemus smile at the end really got me. Odysseus fucked up when he gave Polyphemus his true name, names hold power after all… And once again, here you are adding fuel to the flame of my current hyper-fixation. This was amazing as always Wolfy! 💜
Interestingly in the Odyssey Polyphemus knew by a prophecy that Odysseus would blind him. He just never imagined a tiny human be the infamous Odysseus. Odysseus was grief striken but also his pride was hurt because he was called a coward so he gave his name to show him he is not afraid of him. Polyphemus also left double course. Either Odysseus never reach home or if he does, reach without his comrades (which happened)
I know I'm super late but to me Athena's warning and calling the cyclops a threat was never her actually calling the CYCLOPS a threat but rather the Cyclop's father. I genuinely wonder how different this saga and even the whole story would be if the cyclops wasn't Poseidon's son
The one part I sort of remember from the original story (as I heard it told anyway) was that when Odysseus was shouting back at the cyclops, he didn't *just* screw himself over by giving his name, which was passed straight to Poseidon. From what I recall, it also alerted the cyclops that the people who blinded him were in the process of escaping, so he hurled massive boulders at them. Sure, he was blind and none of them hit, but Odysseus literally rolled the dice with his entire crew's lives, whether they'd all get killed in one shot, for literally no reason. When they'd already basically escaped!
I completely forgot that the cyclops said the name "Nobody" and not the word- and am now getting intense flashbacks from when I first read it years back, friggin ingenious
Polythemus: And then you would never believe it.... Poseidon: He started monologuing? Polythemus: He started monologuing! Told me his name, and rank, and home address.
CHILLS. LITERAL CHILLS. The transitions paired with the intense expressions right afterwards, not to mention the work in perspective, anatomy and body language? The way Odysseus is tense in the beginning to being more hesitant as if pushing through the grief to do what he has to do? And then the smile at the end when Odysseus reveals his name? It's simply magnificent. I've been learning animation recently and you've been a big inspiration for my works! I just admire how you create, and I'm going to be working hard to achieve my dreams..I love this animatic in particular, so don't mind me rewtaching this one. Amazing work Wolfy!
I've been obsess with this musical for a while now. And I can't help but think that, Oddysseus had been listening to Athena for years now, he used to be his obedient servant. But losing his beloved friend and men made him break. He finished the war, all he wanted was his home, his wife and his son. He was so tired and mad that he forgot to be logic, to know that telling him the truth could be dangerous, he went blind

Damn that analysis made me realize a whole lot of things
Big creatures their voices echoed across the island
the cyclops at the end smiling like "i'm gonna end this man's whole carreer" was so on point😭😭
Frfr
Every time I feel stupid, I listen to this song and tell myself that at least I didn’t give out my address, social security number, credit card, IP address, and wifi password to a cyclops.
The best part of "Who hurts you" sequence for me is not the fact that there is a who-knows-how-many-more cyclops, but rather the fact then they are MUCH bigger then Polyphemus. Like, one of them has his only EYE almost as big as Polyphemus whole head.
I think even in the original myth it’s suggested they’re bigger too given they mock Polyphemus when he starts saying “nobody hurt me”.
Seeing Polites' body genuinely made me tear up
Still even when he was dead he looked so innocent 😢 😢
When Ody closed his eyes I broke down crying

@@Golnhekjd, yeah, because going to kill him wouldn't have killed them all since there were many more cyclops, Athena's presence made everything worse, they were already leaving, the cyclops wouldn't have been able of doing anything, and Athena basically made him give him the information that he needed, if he'd actually heard her it would have been worse since all of them would have died, they couldn't even kill one cyclops, not without great loses anyway, how would they have been able of facing so many?

And once again, here you are adding fuel to the flame of my current hyper-fixation.
I love how the Cyclops smiles at the end cause he knows who to call his daddy to kill
