Yeah! Let's go back to the days of heavy metals in our candies, sawdust in our meat, and heroin in our cough syrup. Not to mention, you wouldn't know how much seed oil was in your food if it weren't for mandatory food and drug labeling, enforced by none other than.. the FDA.
I get it, they aren't always the best at protecting us and have many issues, but we also have to look at where we started and how much progress we have made. Can we pressure them to be better? Yes. Have they done absolutely nothing and life would be better without them? Hard no.

She always made a point while we were grocery shopping, to only buy from the outer edges of the store and stay away from the center. She would never buy Crisco or any other bean/seed oil and would cook with lard or rendered fat from cooking bacon or other meats, or use butter and later on coconut oil.

Stopped seed oils completely for my entire family a couple of years ago. We make everything from scratch at home now and eat a lot of meat. If we eat bread it is always home made.

Cold storage. It's why we have fridges and freezers in the first place. Cold kills a lot of microscopic organisms like bacteria. Bacteria, much like everything else in life, has continued to evolve over time. Chances are, our ancestors DID have to deal with such things, but survived it either by building a natural immunity or already having said immunity. However, over time, bacteria, parasites, viruses, etc, would have evolved in ways our body wouldn't be prepared for. To work around this issue, cold storage would allow us to kill of a large amount of those dangerous microscopic organisms before ever actually needing to eat our food. Then, whatever was left, would be killed off when we cooked our food.
