Dave you have quite a collection of books! I have a similar sized collection but of aviation related books, collected over many years. You definitely have me on the hunt for some of these books now. Sad to admit that I only have two true outdoor related books in my collection. "U.S. Military Survival" and "Wilderness Medicine" are my only two. I was taught a lot by my father but he died two days after my 15th birthday so I didn’t get the benefit of a lifetime of learning. We used to get Field and Stream & Sports Afield magazines in the 60’s and 70’s. I always gravitated towards the articles around bushcraft and outdoor survival more than the hunting or fishing. My brothers and I were fascinated with "huts" as we called them and made such shelters anytime we were in the woods. I’m still fascinated with them and that is what drew me to your channel years ago. Awesome collection, and what a coincidence of the signed copy of Mors his book. I have recently acquired a small old book myself, printed in 1947 about woodsman ways ,with the writer who talks about certain experiences in 1932. Book is printed in the town that was heavily bombed in WW2

Hi Dave from Australia (again), here in Australia we had 3 TV bushcraft knowledgeable people that I admire greatly. The first was Malcom Douglas, then Jack Abselom and more recently (Major Les Hiddens.) these 3 men know and have taught Australian bushcraft like no others. Worth looking into if you’re down here or coming down here.
OMG! You have an awesome book collection!! Thank you so much for this video. I'm always skeptical about these types of books because of possible misinformation. You're an extremely knowledgeable man, so I trust your recommendations. Right now, I'm most interested in wild edibles and learning about trees. Now, I have some books to search for!! Thank you again for creating another excellent video!! Enjoy your weekend. -Hollie

To late on getting old, I'm there! Soon retired, come March. I have that very Boy Scout Manual, between that, the Army, and just trial and error, most of it is very familiar. I think I have some of those Field Manuals on PDF. I'll have to recheck my digital library lol. Enjoyed the video Brother Dave.
Loved this episode. If you want to protect and preserve your books, look into scrapbook supplies. Plastic bags and cardboard ones will deteriorate your books. Look for acid and lignin ( ?) free containers. Also photograph storage supplies will help too.

If you learn Swedish, I recommend books with Mr Lars Fält as author or co-author. Mr Fält (by some called "Svält", "starvation" in Swedish...), is stil live and kicking. He met Mors back in the days and have done a lot, including writing a bunch of books on survival and bushcraft. Even at least one book for children I think. I love the idea of making books on survival and bushcraft for children. Mr Fält is not the only expert on survival in Sweden, but he one of the "founding fathers" on survival within the Swedish Armed Forces and it seems he made a name of himself even after leaving the armed forces. As others, he also has a signature bushcraft knife for sale.
I just ordered the reading the woods book. It will be a nice addition to my library. Ashley’s book of knots is the ultimate book for ropecraft, but it’s expensive. I have one of Hugh McManners books. I’m happy to see that your collection is wide ranging. I paired down a bit a few years ago but have added new books to replace them 😂 Thanks for sharing 😊
Thank you, Dave for sharing so much timeless information! Indian crafting and old illustration are so precious and very much overlooked today. Love this idea of you and Nick building an underground bug-out camp! Indian Herbalogy of North America by Alma Hutchens, may be of interest to you? Enjoy your weeks end & stay cool...!

Thanks, Dave. I already have some of your top recommendations, b ut there are quite a few here I have never seen. Something that occurred to me for the first time, seeing the older Scouting Handbook, is that the scout is shown in virtually the same pose as the iconic "sasquatch photo" from the mid-20th century (minus the clothes and gear, of course). LOL
Hi Dave An excellent book not focused on survival or bushcraft but focused on needs in emergecies is called "engineering in emmergies". It is very instructional. Kind regards Alain
Great video Dave! Wonderful books. I have a lcollection, but I don't think I have any of those. I'll have to pick up some of those. I look in thrift stores and garage sales are good places to find them treasures. UA-cam and the internet are great for information quick, but there's nothing like the smell and feel of a real book. Thanks for sharing!
The first survival book I ever read was The SAS Survival Handbook by Lofty Wiseman , back in the 1980's [ it was a gift from my Dad ] ; and the second one was How To Stay Alive In The Woods by by Bradford Angiers [ my friend gave me the book ] .

G'day Dave, awesome mate !!!!!! I really like the look of "Reading the Forest" in particular. Even though there is so much regurgitated stuff out there, I've found there are often subtle differences worth picking up on. Incidentally, they often pop up at Sunday markets for a pittance. Got Lofty's as an example, for the princely sum of 50 cents AUD, (around 30 cents USD). Cheers Duke.
Hello Duke! Im glad you liked it. Yep, even with the copy cat regurgitated books theres a few tidbits of info and can be different. 50 cents is a steal on Loftys book! Thanks for watching
'Survival on Land and Sea'. Written by the Craighead brothers. A US Navy manual. If you can find the original edition, (1940-50's) it is packed with unique, tried and tested by the Navy, practical, true (no BS) techniques for global survival, which was sanctioned and refined using actual US Navy personnel as guinea pigs to see what worked, as well as using coastal Native practices, from the Philippines to New Guinea, to Alaska, the Georgia Everglades, and other areas. The latter edition (1980's) has removed training exercises for navigation and other useful techniques, but is still jam packed useful. Another good book to have is Clyde Ormond's book, 'The Complete Book of Outdoor Lore and Woodcraft'. The best books are tried, true, no BS, old school techniques, written down by people who went into untamed wilderness regularly. Their authors practiced what they preached in their books. If it doesn't work, they don't discuss it. A lot of modern books simply regurgitate what has been circulated for decades; but the authors have not tried them themselves. Either they give incomplete information, or it is just regurgitated to fill in a page. Some even copy and paste sketches from old books. The Old Ones have been there and done it themselves. The oldest Boy Scout Manuals are excellent. Thanks. Take care.
Bushcraft by Richard Graves. Highly recommend old school manual on wilderness living. Covers many points others don't. Not sure when first edition came out but probably the 50s or 60s. I got my copy in 82. Online versions are available but may be called Australian Bushcraft.
@bushcraftbasics2036 Talk about a small world! Richard Graves Bushcraft was the first outdoor survival skills that I purchased as well and around 1982-84. I had read everything in the public library on the topic at the time. This was something new and was small enough to pack along. My first copy lost the cover and the whole bok is now in a couple of pieces. It even got wet when I tried keeping it in an outdoor cache. I picked up another copy of that edition a couple of years ago for nostalgia’s sake!
@@PlainsmansCabin Picked up that book at a Junior High School book fair and it is what got me into outdoor stuff. A bit older now but still carefully flip through its pages from time to time.

Oh man its like having Supermans autograph in my book! Thanks for watching Mike!
@@Reallybigmonkey1 thunderous laughter!
As you panned over all the books, I couldnt help but think " the only book that will be missing is yours." Great vid, thanks Howdy to Nick
I'd love to write a book! I may do that one day. I'm glad you liked it and Nick says hello!
You are sooo right! Dave needs to pen a book or several! I'd stand in line for them!

You have more than enough info already to write a fantastic book!
Just taking all your tips and creations from your videos and write them out. Plus you have the added benefit of having ready made pics by taking frame shots from the videos.
If you do it, think of all the viewers that would buy it!
I would! Please do it! :)
Looks like a lot of knowledge to have. Might have to pick a few of those up myself.
Fantastic to hear that Matt and Thanks for watching
@@Reallybigmonkey1 I might be late to the party, but never miss a video. I’m still going back to the old ones I’ve missed.

Another great video Sir! I really appreciate showing your audience your top 50 survival books! I'm already looking for a couple of them!

The survival handbook is my personal favorite, it's similar to the wilderness training manual ,. Completely illustrated really a fantastic book
You mean the SAS one? I love it too. Thanks for watching

Great recommendations, Dave. I'm happy to say my library includes quite a few of your choices. Thanks for sharing.
Very cool to hear that and thanks for watching!
@@Reallybigmonkey1 , how about considering a realistic survival edc kit? One that someone would actually carry, like our wife and kids.
@@branch_preparedness For wilderness I've shown several of those on video already but never an urban kit if that's what you're referring to
@Reallybigmonkey1 , and I have loved those. But yes, in an urban setting. My wife and kids don't want bulky, and it has to be compact. I put one together for each of them, but I'm curious with these folks in mind, rather than just dudes.
@@branch_preparedness Ah, in an urban environment I'd definitely not know enough about that to suggest kit contents.
This was great Dave! Nice to know that some of my books are in your favorites. I've already ordered a couple of your recommendations.
I really do love my older books with the good line drawing illustrations and of course, Mors' books.

Hello and I've heard of Les Hiddens but not them other two so I'll look them up. Thanks for the comments and thanks for watching
I used to watch Malcolm Douglas, I believe he died in a car crash, sad.
-Hollie
Thanks Hollie! I'm glad you liked it. It took quite a while to gather these books and there's a few more old ones I'd like to get. Take care and you have a great weekend too!

Good info! Thanks for the recommendations on books!

The first survival book I ever read was The SAS Survival Handbook by Lofty Wiseman , back in the 1980's [ it was a gift from my Dad ] ; and the second one was How To Stay Alive In The Woods by by Bradford Angiers [ my friend gave me the book ] .
Both are fantastic books!

That dugout on a slope was also my favourite. However I always wondered what was the chance of the tall wall collapsing on you.
It is awesome. Im guessing dont make the dirt layer on top too heavy? Or support with cross lattice and burlap?
Thanks. Take care.
outstanding addition
Very well stated! And I havent heard of those other two books so Ill look into them. Thanks for the info and Thanks for watching

Bushcraft by Richard Graves.
Highly recommend old school manual on wilderness living. Covers many points others don't. Not sure when first edition came out but probably the 50s or 60s. I got my copy in 82.
Online versions are available but may be called Australian Bushcraft.
@bushcraftbasics2036
Talk about a small world!
Ive heard of Richard Graves and have been wanting that book but never got around to getting one. I dont really want a reprint, Id love to have an old edition.

Nice collection of old and new outdoor books. Wiseman’s book is really good. I liked Mykel Hawke’s and Les Stroud’s TV shows. Wouldn’t mind having their books if I could find them. “Surviving The Wild” by Joshua Enyart, The Grey Bearded Green Beret is good. Well, you shouldn’t want for lack of knowledge on surviving in the woods. Good stuff, Dave.
