The version caught me off guard. Typically Judas is rock tenor role, but this guy has a evocative and doubtless powerful baritonal vocal quality in this song. It's a really refreshing change. He rocks!!!
WillOfTheFire123 actually, it’s in the original key his register is just so high like possibly contralto that the song sits lower in his register. That’s why it sounds low
@@glowco.717 Definitely a baritone, with a very well developed mix. You can hear it in Bring On The Men he did at Broadway Backwards and just his speaking voice too, his voice really pops in the baritone register.
I don't know why so many people making complaining his voice. I once saw him singing Jesus Christ Superstar in a concert live. Jesus! The energy was so amazing! And he rocked the song!
After seeing the show in San Diego, it's honestly the only production of Superstar I've ever been pleased to listen to. It drives me crazy that people are just saying "he's not angry enough." Judas is not a one dimensional character. In order to go on the journey he does, there's so much more than anger than needs to motivate him. It's not just a story in religion, it's a story about people, and people are not caricatures.
Josh Young is a legend! Having personally known him in different productions, he puts his life into each role. He is very deservant to be on Broadway with his Stratford Festival company members. Broadway hasn't seen the likes of him in a long time.
Saw the show on Saturday afternoon, it was excellent especially Josh Young's performance. He was also lovely at the stage door! The entire cast was so friendly, especially Bruce Down, who took time to give my friends and I some advice about pursuing an acting career. Paul Nolan was also a sweetheart
I agree completely. I saw the show in Stratford, and Josh, without a doubt, was the highlight of the show. I think a lot of people don't understand that when you take a show, move into a church, and do a concert version it will not be the same as if you see it on stage. This is a good version, but it is so much better live on stage!!!
Seeing this performed live was unbelievable! (If this particular performance was a bit off, I personally would offer the explanation that he was given a CRYPT as a venue. Geez. THAT must've been rather disconcerting). I've heard people comment that Mr. Young wasn't right for the role, but it was my introduction to the show, and I could not have been happier with it! I thanked him at the stage door for a great performance, and I'll say it again: thanks for a great performance, Mr. Young! :)
It's very, very ambitious to have such a baritonal singer playing Judas, a role with a notoriously difficult range. And I think Josh Young's superior technique allows him to navigate through the part with aplomb.
i saw him a few days ago at the jesus christ dress rehearsal. it was so amazing, and he was just brilliant. one of the best nights of my life i got to go back stage :)
I'm just a huge fan of the musical and I was so happy with Josh's rendition. His voice is beautiful and he has that soul you need to carry it. He's got it. I'm seeing the play next weekend and looking forward.
Wow. I am glad to hear a tenor baritone sing it nicely. I am tired of the really shrieking versions being encouraged by mainstream rock. His voice will last longer because he is using his diaphragm.
+Asian Guy in TO Well tenors sing with their diaphragm also. It's just a matter of trained vs untrained. I like Judas to have a strong lower register as well as high register because it makes his songs sound more dynamic.
What do you mean by lasting longer when using diaphragm? It's kinda hard not to use diaphragm, as it's to my knowledge, not really voluntarily controlled. Either way, do you mean that rock singers put too much sub glottal pressure on vocal folds?
Josh Young has a wonderful voice, he should be in this musical, in a film version of it. I like that he just dose not stand their singing without movement.
I have seen this production at Stratford twice. It is amazing. Josh sings this song differently that he did when interacting with the other performers and those performances differed than his incredible album "Still Dreaming of Paradise." Don't miss an opportunity to see Jesus Christ Superstar on Broadway.
Having seen this on Broadway, I'd like to say that Josh Young was amazing as Judas. Carl Anderson obviously casts a huge huge shadow, even so, Young did a fantastic job.
It's actually a very, very big range. Much of the role has phrases that hang around the top of the tenor range, often going beyond (Judas' death has about four high D's, and the score actually requests a high E in the "i don't know how to love him" reprise). Also, the last supper has that wild phrase ("every time I look at you etc") that hangs around high C forever. In general, the tessitura of Judas is about a fourth higher than the average broadway tenor role, and some of those notes are wild
@happywash what wows me about this performance is his control of his tone and high A's. Not vibrato (anyone can do that) but his pure pop wound coming through which makes it sound so nice! I get chills every time. Paul Nolan playing Jesus is also another reason to see this show. He has an amazing voice and keeps you on the edge of your seat all the time. Lee Siegel is also amazing, adding yet another jolt of adrenaline to the show. Please see the show, though... You won't regret it.
Right! I totally forgot they went to broadway. I was at the show in Stratford when the producers decided to take this to New York. I have to say I'll miss them though, Josh Young and Chilina were exceptional in Evita. And then Chilina and Paul Nolan were just as great in West Side Story (try to imagine Paul Nolan singing "Maria" while doing chin-ups off of a balcony).
Unfortunately not. I don't know the details, but the Stratford festival usually has to take down all footage/promo clips of its season shortly after it ends for whatever reason. I'm sorry I missed seeing him in the role and that there's no footage too. He does sing "High Flying Adored" on his album Still Dreaming of Paradise though!
Actually I think he has a voice that makes me cry when you hear him do Kerrigan-lowdermilk songs!!! Soooo good! Best version of How Not To Be With You forever.. I don't think anybody will outdo him doing this song.. Buy his debut cd on iTunes!!! 👏🏽👏🏽BRAVO!!
Fantastic!! I hope everone watching this gets to see the show in person. It's amazing. One thing though: Mr. Editor, just because you had a lot of camera angles and shots to choose from does not mean you have to throw them into every word, phrase or held note. During the line "You've begun to matter more than the things you saaaaaaaayyyy..." There are 6 different shots during "say" alone! That's ridiculous. I'll watch and listen to this again many times, but with my eyes closed.
Everyone whining about Josh's voice and the arrangement of this song clearly haven't seen the show yet. This is an acoustic concert and totally lacks the production values (most obviously the electric guitars) that makes the score so recognizable. The arrangement here is not what the show itself uses so you really do need to see clips of the play to judge fairly. This performance doesn't do justice to either his vocal control or his passionate delivery--he steals the show, without question.
@happywash I do agree with you. The tune in "Have you forgotten how put down we are" is honestly my favourite part of the show. The thing is, I've seen the show twice and there is a key of reservation for it. Although it isn't evident, Josh Young may not be "letting it rip" in order to save himself for more dramatic songs such as Judas' Death or Superstar. He's Judas for a full performance, so it's not necesarily justified to judge him on one song.
@happywash having seen the show 8 times in Stratford I can tell you that you will not be dissapointed by Josh's performance, he was not in full judas mode here, for obvious reasons, so that may have held him back a bit. Believe it or not The cast is using a different score then the original. It is the most obvious in this song though. Josh is the perfect fit for this role! Go see the show please, he brings so much to judas.
Anyone that said you have to meet people's expectations doesn't know theatre our acting. If you perform to please others you won't get anywhere. If you're not going to see a sure because it's not like previous version then you're missing out. A revival should be something new, not a copy of the original. Now is he the best choice for Judas? I don't know but his version of Superstar made me want to see the show.
Heard something similar about Ted Neeley never having any training. While vocal teachers are awesome to have-the real learning comes in on the stage indeed. ;-)
But I can completely agree with how performing shows are the greatest way to grow as an artist/musician/technician etc. etc. My two cents here is that for those that may not have the freak gifts of Josh Young, supplementing that 'if i'm performing i'm living' attitude with a healthy amount of musical training is probably a safer bet.
This part was written for a rock tenor, not a baritone, he's keeping this entire performance in his chest voice for the majority of the song aside from a small amount of falsetto, no head voice, nothing else. This is a rock opera, I'm sure they can find singers up to the challenge.
He changed the melody on the two most powerful parts of the song: "...we are occupied, have you forgotten how put down we are?" and also: "...and see our chances weakening with every hour...". :(
I respect Josh Young and he is a great singer... but they need to upload a song of their lovely little understudy Jeremy Kushnier as Judas because boy did he kick some ass tonight. Amazing performance and I wish he wasn't an understudy.
You mean Jeremy Kushnier? They're both great actors but Josh kills this role --- it's not nearly so operatic in the actual show. Look up this recording on iTunes (it's on his newest album) because THAT is how it sounds in the show.
I saw it with Tony Kushnier as the understudy. he kicked ass. Josh Young sounds cool on this song. I would have liked more rock, and less gaston though.
While I am a huge fan of Josh Young and did see him in the Stratford production I do agree he feels miscast as Judas. That being said, anyone who says emotions like anger, and frustration, and despair cannot be communicate by notes in a lower register has clearly never seen a performance of Sweeney Todd.
MrMikesok Thats not how it works... Josh Young is a baritone, singing higher notes but he has a deeper tone so the notes sound darker/richer...
@@glowco.717 Definitely a baritone, with a very well developed mix. You can hear it in Bring On The Men he did at Broadway Backwards and just his speaking voice too, his voice really pops in the baritone register.
I totally agree

Saw this live. Josh was absolutely amazing! He put everything he had in his performance. Definitely deserving a Tony nomination. Let's hope he wins!
What a wonderful performance! I wish I could have been there to experience it.
What an amazing bass player !!! OMG !!!

Josh Young's voice is good! I wish I had seen him in 2012 as Judas. I like this style of Heaven on Their Minds.
I'm in tears.
He sounds phenomenal live, I was literally blown away the first, second, AND third time I saw it. He's flawless live.
He IS this show!! AGREE AGREE AGREE
You should have seen him and the rest of the cast in person like I did. He was fantastic.
It's very, very ambitious to have such a baritonal singer playing Judas, a role with a notoriously difficult range. And I think Josh Young's superior technique allows him to navigate through the part with aplomb.
AMAZING his voice is so powerful
i saw him a few days ago at the jesus christ dress rehearsal. it was so amazing, and he was just brilliant. one of the best nights of my life i got to go back stage :)
He is so good it makes me sad that anyone has that much talent. He could sing opera...He rocks in Evita....huge star!
I love this version. Got to see him live on broadway in 2012. His take on Judas is unique and refreshing!
He is so, so good! What an amazing voice... And the emotion.. Wow!!
I'm just a huge fan of the musical and I was so happy with Josh's rendition. His voice is beautiful and he has that soul you need to carry it. He's got it. I'm seeing the play next weekend and looking forward.

I saw this on Sunday. Oh my God (no pun intended)!!! Josh was amazing!!!!
They better make a recording!! I couldn't continue living without it
I LOVE HIM!!!!!!!!!

I thought the same thing when I saw Josh the first time last week, but was totally converted when I saw it again two days later :) Fantastic!
love the bass on this.
👏👏👏👏
this is amazing, wish i'd be there.
Brilliant. Just Brilliant. I subscribed to this channel because Josh Young impressed me so with his singing and his acting in these clips.
awsome !!!
Some of the singing was just fantastic
That beginning riff sounds so good on bass

josh young.....fantastic.
i saw him live too! at the jesus christ super star dress rehearsal, oh my god, so amazing
Que hombre tan guapo el interprete de Judas
Playing the keyboard is the wonderful Rick Fox.
I hope he wins the Tony. I want to see that cutie on stage accepting the award. I'll take him, yes please. Want.
Eres increíble de verdad me encantas que gran talento y que maravillosa voz
"rock yodeling" is the greatest term ever
Epic!
Wow. I had heard Josh Young was great, but I had no idea how original his Judas was.

Uwielbiam kiedy muzyka współgra z aktorstwem. Mniam!
if you see him live you'll know, he is actually a brilliant judas
I agree!
ok but who edited this video like. who felt it was necessary to make this many cuts
unreal! i met him and saw him live. also met paul nolan. question does he usually go down on the notes? he sings it low and it sound good!
@imsiena123 agreed. saw him in stratford and he was so emotional in the role. this is just a concert after all
He would be awesome as Che, in Evita as well. Great voice!!!
@happywash I do agree with you. The tune in "Have you forgotten how put down we are" is honestly my favourite part of the show. Josh sings the role beautifully. Anyone else think the tempo is a bit slow though?
Josh Young is really good but his understudy Jeremy Kushnier is brilliant! Jeremy gave one of the best performances I have ever seen!
He played Che at Stratford in 2010 to great reviews. :)
Anyone that said you have to meet people's expectations doesn't know theatre our acting. If you perform to please others you won't get anywhere. i love the richness of his voice, it's sexual!
Heard something similar about Ted Neeley never having any training. While vocal teachers are awesome to have-the real learning comes in on the stage indeed. ;-)
Re-read my comment, dear. I said "Baritonal," not baritone. I agree, he's a tenor with a dark timbre

Świetny aranż i głos - jestem pod wrażeniem.
@lv4bway I also hear him being Che too!
Why are you not the top comment!?!?!?!?!

Yes he definitely did.
Can someone please package him up so I can take him home? Thanks.
HELP Where can I find the full cast of this show? Like ensemble as well
Murray Head is tops...however, this guy is pretty awesome! Saw him live too. Jesus, well that is Ian Gillian...hands down. :-)
@happywash have you seen the 2000 film version of superstar? Jerome Pradon? There are better places to make your argument, sir.
I respect Josh Young and he is a great singer... but they need to upload a song of their lovely little understudy Jeremy Kushnier as Judas because boy did he kick some ass tonight. Amazing performance and I wish he wasn't an understudy.
LOLZ Drew Sarich is the best judas then Carl Anderson then maybe Young. Also no knocking Tim Minchin he did a good portrayal of Judas.
Tony Kushnier wrote Angels in America, you're thinking of Jeremy Kushnier
he played Che at the Stratford Festival already!
Keyboardist rocks.
Anybody knows who is he?
Rockinhaley...............I did!!!! But its just my opinion though....we all have them lol! lol!
Right on, is there any footage on youtube?
You mean Jeremy Kushnier? They're both great actors but Josh kills this role --- it's not nearly so operatic in the actual show. Look up this recording on iTunes (it's on his newest album) because THAT is how it sounds in the show.
@happywash Alright. If you're not going to see the production based on one video, your loss.

Dont take all the credit grace, i came up with that lol!
Debería ser pecado amar a este hombre (?)
