i had no clue walmart still sold fish! i remember when i was younger i'd always see dead fishes in my local walmart. they took them out around the time i turned 8 (im 16 now). im glad no more fishes will suffer in walmart
Same. I vividly remember being like 6 yo and seeing all the tanks with dead fish at my local Wal-Mart. They stopped selling fish when I was 8 ... I'm nearly 22 now but I have rather visceral reactions to Wal-Mart and fish in the same sentence.
Those worms are probably detritus worms, the earthworm of the aquarium basically. They usually live in the substrate and eat leftover food and they're a good snack for Bettas and other smaller fish.
Thank you for commenting that because I think that is exactly it! I didn't have much time to look up what exact worm it was and assumed it was a parasite because I had them in a different tank a year ago
You didn’t cycle the tank & you added the fish. I saw you added beneficial bacteria though. As a beginner, I want to know if this is okay to always do and if the fish will be okay like this or was this something you had to do because of an urgent situation?
You may have detritus worms which are completely harmless though gross and some fish actually eat them. You need to watch a few of aquarium co ops and Rachel O learys video on harmless worms vs detrimental ones. You may have a parasitic one but more than likely you dont or would notice it with the health of the fish suffering that have been in that established tank and filter. Just thought id give you a tip, and also i seen a video once where the lady from creative pet keeping (i believe Kasia) was freaking out over worms she found in an established tank she broke down but turns out they were harmless.
I went to Walmart to browse fishtanks because I wanted to buy a new one, and all the tanks were supposedly empty and sold out... but something caught the corner of my eye, and there was a fish left!!! It was a Rainbow Shark, and no staff knew it was there! When I called staff over so I could buy him, they all were in shock. They werent feeding it or anything, and obviously, me being me, I brought it home haha!
You’re welcome! And yes, it would be very annoying to make so many trips to and from Walmart all in a day. I hope that you don’t come across any more problems with the fish tank!
If you're sticking with the chipboard for now you can get cheap book contact and cover it to make it waterproof. Will be cheaper, safer and easier than sealing with sealant.
When it comes to media with Beneficial Bacteria on it, you can keep some gravel inside a piece of netting inside an established tank. Like that when you get another tank and need gravel that is established with bacteria, you have that netted bag of gravel full of Beneficial Bacteria. When it comes to filtration, I recommend Aqua Clear HOB filters. They are superb filters.
I know this video is over a year old but when you have to do an exchange ask the service desk (where you go to return your items) if you can open up the box and inspect the tank on their at the counter to assess any potential damage to the product before driving home (my Walmart let's me do this). That way you don't have to go back and forth in case the tank is cracked or glued wrong. Also thank you for saving these fish!
I have a question with Male betta fish. If you could answer my question or try to I'll be grateful. Is it possible to put two Male betta fish in a 20 gallon tank with other fish with lots of hiding places?
As a former fish breeder of both cichlids and bettas, let me say that it is possible to put to Male bettas together. But there is no guarantee that it will work and you would need a larger tank than 20 gallons. At minimum, you would need a 40. You would also need to get two slower swimming bettas (i.e. no plakats at all) and you would have to have it heavily planted. Even then, it's still a long shot. There is a video here on UA-cam entitled "How to keep many Betta together even Males" which has good tips, but I personally wouldn't try it.
