Lighting the Face

- Lighting close ups of the human face can be done in many ways to change the look of the subject. Here is a rundown of that combination of lights used to achieve a 'cinematic' look.

I just subbed because of the quality of your lighting. What would be really helpful here is another camera to show the lights you are using and their positioning.
Thanks! Definitely time for an update to this now that I have more than one camera :)
Is this the lighting setup that you use for your other videos as well? I really wish there were some sort of BTS shot so that we could see the position of the lights, etc. Or maybe just a simple lighting diagram, etc. Anywho, the interview shot on your videos looks quite nice. Thanks for sharing your setup.
Same set up I use in all my vids. I change lights in and out, and experiment with the grade, but I use this same basic setup.
And do you position the litemat slightly camera right? I know you said in one of your videos that it was at about arm's length from subject. I was just wondering if this setup would work if you were to also shoot slightly wider and had to bring the litemat/key back a little. Basically would it be bright and soft enough. Anyway, thanks for the response!
It still works great. If you’re light is more than 6 foot from subject, I would use a bigger light or diffuse it though a 4 foot frame to keep the softness.
Now I am beginning to understand that it wasn't all about the camera or lens, it was all about lighting and grading. Thank you for your inspiration!
No worries! A lot of the ‘cinematic’ look is about depth and separation. You can use focus, color and brightness to separate, but best results are when ho use all three.
I love how you show step by step as you add lights, I enjoyed this video very much.
Thanks! Hopefully something you can use in your awesome vids :)
It's nice to see you from five years ago after binging some of your more recent videos. This video was good, but your delivery has improved. I can tell you're a lor more comfortable on camera and that's helping you deliver the information quicker and smoother. Keep cranking out great content! Sometimes I cringe when I watch my early UA-cam videos. Last week a troll commented on one, "Why has this video been slowed down on UA-cam? The video is a little choppy and the voice sounds slowed. Changing the playback speed to 1.25 corrects this." 🤦🏻♂️🤣
Thanks John :) I'm tempted to make some of these down but it's all part of the journey
@@Crimsonengine 100%! Now if I can only get my right eye brow to not raise up when I am nervous =)
Man i just discovered your channel, but i really appreciate your merciful mix of technique, tech, talking and telling. I would also second the idea that an even further removed third camera that isn't polished or anything would be helpful in explaining things like orientation of subject to items and also i'm dying to have any realistic sense of your physical restrictions in he space your filming....i thought you were filming from your glassed-in beach house at the beginning and i was wildly heartened when i saw your fairy light were doing the heavy lifting in a familiar sized and similarly unremarkable studio space. THanks again.
Dude. This is awesome, man. These are the kinds of videos that are missing from camera/lighting videos. Someone who really knows how to create something great from all of the technical. I want to see more of this. Subbed and liked, man.
Thanks again. I'd love to do more of these. Maybe lighting a two person conversation. I'm in talks with a local camera house to get access to their gear for reviews, so I'll keep you posted.
Your channel is amazing and under rated. Keep going
very nice. I like how you broke it down and then re built it.
Awesome! Looking forward to the next one
Wow this is really awesome love this look and this video has been super super helpful. Thank you.
Great work, love the effect.
Amazing explanation of how to use light. I wished I watched this like 1 week earlier before having to shoot interviews myself haha. Keep up the good work.
This is a really great look, well done
Thanks Tyler! Loved your suit video!
I love your videos bro. Super helpful!!! Keep them coming
I sub because the quality you shoot on your video, crispy footage and nice lighting, learn so much from you, keep sharing :)
Thanks for an informative video! What was your camera kelvin set to?
Great breakdown, and a cool looking grade as well man.
Thank you! Nice presentation to show effects! More, Please!
Great work man.
Nice lighting!!! Thank you for tutorial. Perfect!!!
Thank you. Happy to help!
Fantastic stuff. Ideas that I need to have repeated into my head enough until I actually follow them.
Came over from MondoBytes's channel!
where's your key light? looks like it was above and straight ahead of you when you moved with the egg crate ? love to see more thanks
Great video!
- where did you get the egg crate?
You're a beautiful man!
great video! thanks for sharing. looking forward to see more useful tips.
Very informative! Thank you very much
Cheers for making this.
Nice lighting, Thank you for tutorial.
Awesome, thanks for doing this!
quality and thoughtful. thank yu for the effort and the sharing. i am now a newly appreciative subscriber! thumbs up.
Great work. I think to further educate you could take a few stills of light placement and have them in your video. Just voice over which fixtures are doing what. Thanks for sharing :)
Thanks for the great information!!!
I am beginning to upgrade my video quality as of this season. I do music on my channel, so I'm not exactly making movies, but I would very much like to get the best I possibly can out of my production. I found your video in my research while shopping online for lighting kits. (I still haven't chosen my lighting; I'm on a tight budget for now.) Anyway, I wanted to thank you so much for your concise explanations. They are especially helpful to those like me who are new to this area of tech and feel a bit overwhelmed. Subscribed!
The video quality was so crispy I couldn't tell i was watching the video in 480p
Nice job!
We are so happy we found your channel. We just subscribed and we hope to learn more from you. Thank you. Have a great day.
Thank you! What an amazing talent you are! I really enjoyed your videos.
Thank you, Mr. Rubidium. My mom and I will be watching more of your tutorial videos. We really enjoyed them. Take care! - From, Caroline
Interesting stuff. I'm not too keen on the LUT myself. A bit too cold, makes you look a bit like the Night King! :)
So interesting. Thanks for posting. Amazing shit you never see behind the scenes.
That was SOOOO Good! Thank you!
That was good. Thanks!
Great setup, I'm using the Canon 5D Mark IV and the EOS R both with C-Log for my talking head vlog with a white wall background, I use a cheap 3 light setup I got from Amazon and two led light for the background, sometimes I get the colors right, sometimes I don't, I still experimenting with the Log to Rec.709 color space and even tho I know which lut to use, I'm not pleased with the result, I have made a test using all available Canon Luts testing each one over one frame into a video then I watched the video on different devices, and the skin color shifts in some devices. Which LUT you recommend to convert from the EOS R and the 5D Mark IV to Rec.709?
The $5 LED Lights from Amazon. Do you have a link for those. Thank you. Nice video.
Enjoyed this
Cheers! Its crazy to looks at this from last year and realise I've come quite a ways since then.
Can you do a tour of your lighting which lighting are you using please
Fantastic, that’s is really great info
Cheers Daniel! This was one of the first videos I did - I'm glad it doesn't look to dated :)
Crimson Engine no at all, I follow a lot of photography channels and I’ve always thought they could step up the vlog lighting , keep up the great content
Please do more of these lighting tutorials!!!
Can do, Gershon. Did you have anything specific in mind? I was thinking about an outdoor interview scenario..
Crimson Engine not really... Yes that would be pretty interesting... I was also thinking more for objects? And not just people... Creative lighting techniques for products and etc... Also more on people...
Also curious what shotgun mic you use as it sounds really good.
Sounds awesome, Gershon. I'll give it a shot.
Crimson Engine awesome, thanks.. I came across your content from Armando's channel, and am loving it so far!!!
Great channel and video. I have a question: I’ve been told to start lighting the background first . But you started with the talent. Is there any benefit over one vs the other?
Also, must have an attractive looking subject and then you’ll have the perfect image 👌😜
I do dig the look, but I would have liked a bit more in-depth of light placements and so on.
Thanks. Now that I have a second camera, I'll be able to do some BTS in coming videos.
I'd be interested in a video about all the requirements that have to be met to get a feature film placed on Amazon Prime (insurances, prop releases, etc) .... any chance you can do one ? I'm hoping to take a year off next year and film my first feature and it's time to start tossing some of this around. thanks !
sometimes , this " harsh lines" is right for the shoot and the mood, depended of where, what situation, what mood, you want . :)
Amazing and simple tutorial! How far were you from the background? Did you use a 35mm lens? What was the aperture? Thanks so much for your answers!!!!!! ^_^
About 12 feet from the background, 50mm lens at f/3.5, Glad you liked it!
Cool!
Love this
What was the last thing you added to give a cool blue look?
its a LUT. You can buy it in the links.
@@Crimsonengine which Lut was it?
Great video can you also add the cost of the other lights (key) and rim light
Did you shoot with c200 and how the hell you get it to look so sharpe image quality is stunning . Did you shoot raw ? And what's your export settings? Thanx I'm a subscriber now
I actually shot this on the 5dm3, in raw with magic lantern. It gives a really great image, albeit in 1080p without sound. I used the Koji 2383 lut for the grade.
I was able to recreate everything until 4:13, then i m not able to replicate - what exactly did you do? did you just open the curtains to let more ambient in and closed the aperture at the same time? some magic happened with the skintones during that jumpcut at 4:17
I opened the window about 12 inches to let some light in and fill the shadows. These days I use a small LED light so that I can control the intensity. You can see the reflection of it in the lower right side of my eyes.
@@Crimsonengine thanks a lot, will try! one more thing, how far is the wall in the background? mine is 6 feet and i m still getting lot of spill from keylight
if you dark your room, and use that light for the face. it doesn't hurt the eyes if you record like that daily?
Actually, making the room darker means that you can get good exposure with less light. What can be tough on talent is when you have to turn up the key to compete with lots of ambient light. Unless you're going for a cowboy squint, its not a good idea.\
Just subbed, Armando sent me... Looking forward to learning a lot Sir
Hey! Happy to help!
Hey! Could you explain why the tone of your skin changes whenever you use sunlight?
No worries. its not direct sunlight, its reflected from the garden outside, so its diffuse and tinted green. Outdoor light can be great, but its hard to control and never stays the same for long as the sun moves. For this reason, even when you want that effect for camera, you usually recreate it with lights.
Crimson Engine Thank you for explaining!
Nice LUT. 👌👌
Bro where can I get this sweet lut? #Subscribed #GreatInfo
Thanks! I just released some here sellfy.com/p/qdpE/
added to the links :)
Nice! Unfortunately I don't use DaVinci Resolve. Do you have luts that can be added to a rec.709 color profile or standard/neutral profile? That's be awesome since I don't always shoot in log. If you do add a this type of lut, I would deff purchase if you release this type of .cube. Thanks!
Hey Jason. Thanks for the feedback. It's pretty straightforward do a version for a normal contrast image that just effects the colors. I'm working on one for the c200 mp4s as well. I'll shoot you another message when they're live!
what is Rec. 709 ?
Rec709 is a normal color space most TVs display. LOG is the greyed out colors that cameras capture. Somewhere along the line you need to convert your LOG footage to Rec709
Crimson Engine Thankyou for quick help 😊
What do you mean by basic colour red 709 am confused
REC709 is a standard color space like you see on your TV, as opposed to LOG color, which is washed out
Your very well lit face transforms to be an art piece. Amazing.
But it would be a bit more instructive if you showed how you installed the lights. Thanks!
Thanks! This was before I had a B camera. I’m going to do an update in the coming weeks.
Yay :)
What was the LUT you used?
Its the one I made - there's a link to it in almost every video :)
00:40 versus 00:55 illustrates how bad LEDs are for correct color tone.
It's not the color tone of the light. One is heavy graded vs untouched.
Where did you buy the grid ??
It came with the light. But something like this would work for anything Kino shaped bhpho.to/2yOdQfR
i am starting to create you tube videos... hope to meet you in person and get a chance to get a lesson from you regarding cinematic ligthing
Ai love how u look pretty with salt and pepper look I mean white hair ahh and no homo
