I had the pleasure to interview game designer Thomas Van Hare who has designed "Achtung Jabo!". Achtung Jabo! is a solitaire wargame about the 371st Fighter Group, which flew ground attack missions on D-Day in the P-47D Thunderbolts (known for its famous "Razorback"). Gameplay depicts the Group's missions on D-Day, June 6, 1944, and the book includes extensive research into the techniques, history, and practices of Allied fighter-bomber units at the time of D-Day.

So many great comments here! Thank you to everyone! If anyone has questions, post them here and I'll be very happy to answer!
What an excellent interview, and great to see the author!
Thank you! Thomas made it easy 😁
looks cool keeping my eyes on this...
Hi mate 😊 Playthrough soon done!
I just bumped into Thomas' games on Amazon. Nice to see the man himself.
What a coincidence. The crazy thing is, we live about 50 minutes from each other by car!
Thanks! Great to hear fro you! If you have any questions about any of my games, I'm active in most of the wargaming groups on Facebook and also on BGG, so post there and I'll answer!
Eeeexcellent video ! Looking forward to be watching other videos in this series soon !
Thank you a lot! Setup video comming soon!
Can’t wait for this one!
It's good! And I am nagging Thomas to make a new tank game 😆
Thank you, sir! And he really is begging me to make a tank game -- tanks don't fly, however, but I'll think about it... (Actually, there are two flying tanks I know of in history, both experiments that didn't get very far).
Heck yes!!! Being a commander of a Fighter Bomber Squadron of P-47's!! Love that! What caught my attention was the detail, including naming all of the pilots you will be sending into missions. I can seriously see the implications it will have on my stories I like writing. There's some weight to that, considering it's a real person that you hope gets to return home.
Very cool!!
Yeah only problem was you got about 55 pilots to name, I only named 20 for the first Squadron, but my imagination ran out 😆 Luckily you're provided with the historical names so you can just use those!
@@WW2SolitaireBoardGameChannel That's so cool! 😂
MAG-23 and I use names of friend for pilots. It got difficult when more sqdns role in. It brings another level of realism to the game when your friends are in the fight and possibly getting injured or killed.
Thank you! For the pilots, you can use the historic names, which are included in the book, or make up your own, or do a mix of both! The idea behind all of my games is to highlight the narrative story and focus on the people who were involved -- the human cost of war matters a lot.
@@HistoricWings The human equation to the Commander's decisions. That's what I like to write about. If I am the commander and I'm putting together flights, it has to be difficult to order men you are actively serving with to battle. With pilots who have probably shared care packages with you, shared stories about home and shown pictures of their wives and loved ones back home.
Then to find out some didn't make the flight home 😢. As a side exercise in writing, try writing that letter home saying how they died 'courageously in combat'.
I'm a sucker for the human element. 😂
Welcome back buddy : ) Hey, hey a LIVE interview! well done, sir!
Thank you mate! I hope you enjoy our collaboration videos :D
Fantastic intro, and a great interview. Looking forward to this…but in the meantime my wallet just took a hit from ordering Mag 23 and the upgrade kit.
Thank you Sir! You are in luck, release is still a few months away, so you got time to save up :D Good luck with MAG23!
I'm hoping to have this title done this month, but the fact is, I really don't know. When it is ready, it is ready; I won't rush it to print and then find myself correcting errors afterward. This play-through was done with the current draft of the rules and there's still more work to be done!
Great thanks for the interview. Thomas, it's a pity you couldn't have released your latest offering for the 80th Anniversary but looking forward to it.
Thank you for watching!
Originally, I wanted to do that -- and another game! However, both are still in process. It is best to not rush with game design or set arbitrary deadlines.
Getting ready to get Mag 23, really looking forward to it
I'm jealous! I heard a lot of good things about that one.
Thanks for the video. Look forward to some of the play.
Setup will hopefully be edited and done the day after tomorrow! Then 2 videos on one patrol of gaming!
Thanks! The first gameplay video is already live and another two or three are following that take you through the ground attack phases, etc., so look for that on this channel! Daniel does a great job editing the videos!
Nice interview :)
Thank you mate!
Great stuff here from 2 cool cats. I smell another winner in Achtung Jabo!
Thank you Sir! Wait until you see the Flak mechanic 💥🤯
Thank you, sir!
I have Tally Ho, boxed set. Great game!
Boxed set is the way that I would go too! I definitely have to get Achtung Jabo!
Thanks for the kind words! Glad you like the game!
👍👍
Cheers Charles!
Time to knock on the door again and ask the big and annoying question of "Wheeeeeeen?"
I think he is planning for it to release this month but could be wrong!! But: SOON!
@@WW2SolitaireBoardGameChannel I've got a wonderful set of metal dice just for this series of games. Ready to rumble. And I hope you're doing well with your volunteer work!
@@man_vs_life Thank you, doing well!
He should finish or refund his Backers for Mêlée Card Game first. Taking money, giving nothing.
@@scadian I have no idea what you're talking about. You come with some serious allegations, could you provide us with more information?
